**Individual, GENERAL Permission Forms are required for each student and MUST be brought to the
convention and turned in by the Sponsor upon arrival. All students will be eligible to sign up for
Ludi/Olympika, having submitted the General Permission Form.

Materials to be submitted separately:
1. Talent show registration (Copy as necessary and send to Alan Abbe at Westlake High School – see
form for details.)
2. State Co-Chair position application (Send to Jennie Luongo. Address is on form.)
3. All pre-judged contests should be mailed in advance, as instructed in the Classical Civilization Rules.

Special Sponsor Notes:
 We encourage everyone to use our new & improved ONLINE REGISTRATION, which will be available at
  http://www.tsjcl.org/convention2012 on February 13th, 2012.
 If you are NOT using online registration, all registration forms MUST be emailed to William.Lee@nisd.net by
  March 1st, 2012. Sponsors and chaperones should order meals if they plan to eat at the convention, as specified
  on the Dining Form.
 If you are interested in running for TSJCL State Co-Chair, please mail the application on the TSJCL website to
  Jennie Luongo by March 1st, 2012.
 A sample TSJCL scantron sheet has been included. Please go over how to fill in these scantrons with
  your students before you come. Please also make sure that your students know that a TSJCL "stop sign”
  means that students risk disqualification if not obeyed.
 Please plan on arriving NO EARLIER THAN 5 PM on Friday.
 Sponsors shall be dropped off at the bus loop. Students shall disembark behind the school at the Student
  Parking Lot and shall enter through the C-building entrance.
 The hospitality room (Lunch Box) will be open to sponsors and chaperones. A light breakfast will be available
  Saturday morning at the sponsors’ and chaperones’ meeting.
 All sponsors & chaperones MUST attend the Sponsors’ and Chaperones’ Meetings on Friday and Saturday. In
  order to run a contest this large, all adults need to know what is going on, where to be, and what is needed from
  them. We will keep it as brief as possible.
 The first general assembly on Friday will be done via the PA system. After the students have received their
  nametags, programs, etc. from the sponsors, they are to report to the Pentathlon rooms no later than 6:15 PM.
  Further instructions will be provided at registration.
 There is a Judges’ and Proctors’ Meeting before each of the performance contests. There will be a coordinator
  for each contest (Costume, DI, Latin Oratory, English Oratory, Sight Recitation, and Vocal). The coordinators
  will make sure all proctors know how to run the prep rooms and coordinate the judges in each room.
 Students with conflicting contests: (e.g. – Certamen and Costume) should check in with the proctors at each
  contest first and then perform at each event consecutively. Proctors will be aware that students with conflicts
  should be allowed to perform as soon as possible. However, competitive Certamen prelims will take
  precedence over other performance based contests. You must check in at the performance contest rooms and let
  the proctors know about the conflict. You must then report to the Certamen round(s) and you may leave as
  soon as your team is done competing.
 You must send at least 2 delegates to the Nominations Committee Friday night and at least 1 delegate to the
  Program of Works meeting in order to vote in this year’s important election.
 You must send between 25% and 33% of your students to the Voting Assembly on Saturday.
 For Friday night’s dinner this year we have two shifts. If you have students that are candidates, attending
  Nominations Committee, the program of works, or if they are competing in Dramatic interpretation, Certamen,
  English oratory, play, or costume they must be registered for the first shift. You must designate when
  registering the specific shift for each student.
 There will be a 3rd color of nametags at registration that is shift neutral. This means that any student who has
  this color of nametag will be able to attend either shift. This will only be the case of students who have conflicts
  with both shifts. Please indicate this on the registration form.

 2012 TSJCL Academic Contests Registration
Must be received by email or online registration no later than March 1st, 2012.

1. Each TSJCL chapter may enter only ONE contestant in each level of a written academic contest.
2. Each TSJCL chapter may enter only ONE contestant in each level of Sight Recitation, Latin Oratory, and
         Boys’/Girls’ Dramatic Interpretation.
3. Each student may enter only TWO academic contests. (Decathlon, DI, Latin Oratory, etc.)
4. Students must compete in the correct level. Infractions of the rules may result in penalties to the school involved.

           2012 TSJCL Contestant Registration Form
1. Every student participating at contest must have an ID number of 6 digits. The first three numbers are the school code. The last
         three are assigned by the sponsor by writing the student name and level of Latin next to a number below (e.g. 550-001 John
         Doe). Please arrange the list in alphabetical order, if at all possible.
2. Please make several copies of this form before you mail it, and make sure that your students know their ID numbers. Remind them
         that the numbers will be on their nametags, which they need to wear on their person at all times.
3. Please indicate the Friday night dinner shift for each student. If they need to have flexibility on the shift, select both.

Ludi Basketball and Ludi Volleyball

Ludi Open Certamen

             YE OLDE SCL CATAPULT-ALOOZA 2012
             It is the most fantastic event that TXSCL has to offer.
 Fashion your most efficient and accurate siege weaponry, and ready them to
   engage in a contest that will test your physical, mental, and constructive
                                    capabilities.
                             There are four divisions:
  Ancient Large, Ancient Miniature, Modern Large, and Modern Miniature.
   Dimensions and judging criteria are available on the attached sheet. Any
 catapults or trebuchets that are recycled from previous competitions shall be
         destroyed with fire and sent home at their parents’ expense.
                         Good luck. You shall require it.
Competition Criteria
  - All divisions will be judged on the basis of distance and accuracy. (i.e. whoever
    can fire the provided ammunition the furthest along a straight line is deemed the
    victor)
  - Any designs deemed unsafe by the judges will be disqualified without appeal.
  - Any designs that do not fit the size requirements will be examined on a case-by-
    case basis for admittance to the appropriately sized competition.

Catapult divisions

    Ancient Large
   - Must be built using materials utilized by the Roman Army for siege weaponry.
   - Must be between four and six feet in length, and no wider than five feet.
   - Must utilize weapon design characteristic of the Roman Empire.
   - Will be firing softball-sized ammunition.

    Ancient Small
   - Must be built using materials utilizing by the Roman Army for siege weaponry.
   - Must be between two and six feet in length, and no wider than three feet.
   - Must utilize weapon design characteristic of the Roman Empire.
   - Will be firing golf ball-sized ammunition.

    Modern Large
   - Can be built using any available materials that are not part of a pre-fabricated
     design or kit.
   - Must be between four and six feet in length, and no wider than five feet.
   - Must utilize tension and/or gravity-based power system (no explosives,
     magnetism).
   - Will be firing softball-sized ammunition.

    Modern Small
   - Can be built using any available materials that are not part of a pre-fabricated
     design or kit.
   - Must be between two and four feet in length, and no wider than three feet.
   - Must utilize tension and/or gravity-based power system (no explosives,
     magnetism).
   - Will be firing golf ball-sized ammunition.

Dear TSJCL Sponsor(s),

      Do you have a student that would be interested in running for a TSJCL Office?
   Do you have a student that would be interested in applying for an appointed position?

Please encourage your students to consider this excellent opportunity. Those who are interested
must attend the Nominations Committee meeting Friday night at the state convention, Elections
Assembly and Candidates’ Open Forum on Saturday, as well as the Spring TSJCL Executive
Board meeting to be held after the State Convention.

Requirements:
    Each chapter can only have one candidate per year.
    Sponsors are required to travel with the officers to three board meetings a year. TSJCL
       will reimburse Sponsors and officers for reasonable travel expenses to board meetings.
       Sponsors are also encouraged to accompany officers to the NJCL Convention. The
       officers’ convention packet will be reimbursed at the lowest possible convention cost,
       though no travel expenses are covered.
    If a student currently at your school will attend a new school at
       some point within the next year, that student still counts as a
       member of your own chapter.
    All candidates must be in good standing with both TSJCL and NJCL.
    If you have an applicant, he/she cannot announce his/her candidacy until
       Nominations Committee.
    Two student representatives from your school must be present at
       Nominations Committee on Friday in order for your chapter to be eligible to
       participate in the election process.
    The deadline for applying for nomination is March 1, 2012.

                               Nominations Materials
Dear TSJCLers,

Elections for the 2012-2013 year are rapidly approaching. If you are interested in running for an
office, follow the guidelines below.
    1. Check the TSJCL website for each officer’s duties and make a decision about the position
         for which you would like to run (www.tsjcl.org).
    2. Consult the by-laws to ensure that you meet the requirements for the office you plan to
         run for.
    3. Talk to your sponsor so that he/she can give you all of the proper paper work.
    4. Fill out the application correctly with neat handwriting.
    5. Copies of the application will be available in the state registration packet sent to your
         school and on line.
    6. Complete and mail your application.

As a candidate you will be responsible for:
   1. Attending the Nominations Committee on Friday, March 30, 2012.
   2. You will need to give a two minute speech in order to introduce yourself to the
       representatives from each school and to formally announce your candidacy. This must be
       the first time you announce to anyone that you are running for a TSJCL office and you
       may put up campaign materials only after Nominations Committee.
   3. In accordance with NJCL policy, you must limit your campaign expenditures to $40.00
       (please provide all receipts at the Nominations Committee). Failure to adhere to these
       guidelines will result in your disqualification from running.
   4. In addition to your speech at the Nominations Committee, all candidates will be required
       to make a speech at the Elections Assembly on Saturday, March 31, 2012. Your
       individual speech may be prefaced by an opening statement made by a fellow student
       who can introduce you to the assembly.
   5. Immediately following the Elections Assembly, the Candidates’ Open Forum will take
       place. This is an opportunity for student representatives from each participating school to
       ask candidates questions, and it is a great opportunity to voice your ideas for change and
       make personal connections with other members of the TSJCL. Make sure that you dress
       appropriately for the Elections Assembly.

If you are considering running for TSJCL President, National Convention experience is strongly
encouraged. Please note that the offices of Parliamentarian, Webmaster, and Editor will not be
filled until after the State Convention. However, you are welcome to submit your application for
these positions if they should interest you. Remember, all applications for elections should be
postmarked no later than March 1st, 2012 and sent to the address on the application. If you have

                   Show!!
                      Try out for the 2012 TSJCL Talent Show!

    On Friday evening of the State convention, tryouts will be held. Please arrive a few
                  minutes early to tryouts, and make sure to preregister.
 We will provide a piano and a microphone, but if anything additional is needed for your
                                performance, please bring it.
                   All performances must be between 2 and 4 minutes.
                The top three acts will each receive cash awards as follows:
                                         First Place:

                                      First Runner-up:
                                             $30
                                     Second Runner-up:
                                             $20
The first place winner will also be featured at the General Assembly on Saturday evening
of the convention, so please be certain that you can commit to this before signing up for
the Talent Show.
