He was one of four Educators of the Year

Building blocks may be something children play with, but HTC graduate
Amanda Baumann has used her HTC training as a special type of building
block to create a foundation for learning and career advancement. It all
started when she heard about the Child Development program at HTC.
“I’ve always been drawn to careers that involved working with children,”
said Baumann, who was a daycare teacher in Bloomington, Minnesota,
when she heard about HTC’s Child Development program and attended
an open house at the college. That’s where she talked with HTC
Instructor Carla Weigel and decided to enroll in the program. HTC’s
convenient class schedule made it possible for her to continue working
as a daycare teacher and attend classes to earn an A.A.S. in Child
Development.
“The instructors were very knowledgeable and I really enjoyed the lab
nursery school that was on campus,” said Baumann. “That was by far
the most beneficial aspect of my education because as students we
were able to observe children in action right on campus. That really
reinforced what we were learning.”
Baumann, who lives in Cologne, graduated from HTC’s Child
Development program in May 2000. She was then hired at a school
in Eden Prairie as an inclusion assistant working with special needs
children. “I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to experience this aspect
of working with children if I hadn’t gotten training at HTC,” emphasized
Baumann, who worked with special needs children full-time for three
years before the birth of her own children. She has continued to work as
a substitute inclusion assistant in area school districts since 2003, and
she’s still building on her base of knowledge.
Baumann has now embarked on the next segment of her education.
“Thanks to my associate degree in Child Development, I have recently
gone back to college through HTC and Southwest Minnesota State
University to earn a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, with
a minor in special needs.” Through HTC’s partnership with Southwest
Minnesota State University, it’s possible for students to complete a
bachelor’s degree without going any further than the HTC campus.
“I’m looking forward to furthering my career in working with all children,”
said Baumann, who expects to complete her degree in 2009. With her
love for children, her education and her experience, Amanda Baumann
believes that working with children is the only career for her. “I’ve
embraced myself as a teacher, and I will be for the rest of my life.” She
has found that her HTC training helped advance her career and gave her
Amanda Baumann the confidence to continue her education. Those are the building blocks
10 of a strong foundation for success.

impossible for some students to stay in college,” explained Marketon.
“I wanted to find a way to help.” Her idea grew from an assignment for an
Ethics class she was enrolled in at the time of her grandfather’s death in
January 2005. To Marketon, establishing a crisis fund seemed like a way
to make a difference. To establish the fund, she has worked with Carole
Carlson, HTC’s executive director of Institutional Advancement, to provide
background information to donors about the HTC Foundation, which
oversees disbursement of grants from crisis funds.
Since Marketon’s grandfather, George Karels, was a businessman in
Howard Lake, she approached businesses there about supporting a fund
in his honor. The Howard Lake Lions Club held a chow mein dinner as a
fundraiser and donated the proceeds to the George Karels Crisis Fund.
The organization’s support also helped get an article in the local
newspaper which helped promote the event. So far, Marketon has
collected donations totaling $1,825.11 for the George Karels Crisis Fund.
As Carlson describes it, the grants awarded from a student crisis fund
help with a small but immediate need, such as a medical expense or the
cost of a car battery. For example, the fund has helped a student replace
textbooks destroyed in an apartment fire. “For a lot of people $50 or $100
doesn’t mean much, but for some of our students, it can mean staying in
school,” Carlson explained. “Charity’s work will make it possible for
HTC students to receive a helping hand when they need it most.”
It’s easy to see that whether she’s helping her family or fellow HTC
students, Charity Marketon has already found a way to make a difference.
