   Ethics: rules and regulations governing
    the conduct of an individual with others.

        WHY IS CYBER ETHICS
           IMPORTANT?
   The growth of the WWW has created
    several new legal issues which older laws
    may not be able to answer completely.
   The Internet is an international
    phenomenon. How do you impose rules
    from nation to nation with different
    cultures?
   There is no single body of law governing
    the Internet.

   Accuracy: Who is responsible for the
    information on the web? Who is
    accountable for errors?
   Privacy: What information does a site
    have the legal right to obtain?
   Property: Who owns the trademark or
    copyright?

   Cookies: A piece of data a web site collects about
    you to track your browsing habits and which is
    stored on your hard drive (temporary or permanent)

     obscene, violent, hateful or other inappropriate
     material from being displayed in a browser.

     domain name with the intent of profiting from
     someone else’s trademark.

   Defamation: a false accusation or
    malicious misrepresentation of someone’s
    words or actions

   Hacking/Cracking: gaining unauthorized
    access to a web site or network
   Piracy: unauthorized duplication of an
    original work for commercial gain
   Copyright violations: on-line music and
    video sharing, etc.
      Copyright: exclusive rights to a creative
       work

            PUBLIC DOMAIN
   Definition: A creative work that is not
    protected by copyright and which may be
    freely used by everyone including:
      Media (music, pictures, videos)

      Software (freeware, shareware)

      Intellectual Property (poems, research)

      Pictures, graphics, clipart

           PUBLIC DOMAIN
    Reasons a work is not protected include:
    1. the term of copyright has expired
    2. the author failed to satisfy statutory
       formalities to perfect the copyright
    3. the work is from the U.S. Government

     PROTECTING YOURSELF
   Use a different password for each
    account.
   Create passwords with a variety of letters,
    numbers, symbols, and case changes.
   Don’t share passwords.
   Don’t give personal information to people
    or businesses you don’t know.
   Don’t open email attachments from
    unknown sources.

     PROTECTING YOURSELF
   Clear your history and cache after using
    public computers.
   Always log off accounts.
   Research business before giving personal,
    medical or financial information.
   Read privacy policies.
   Use secure sites and networks.
