Originally according to archaeologists St Kilda was known as Euro-Yroke named after the red sandstone which was used to sharpen axes along the beach. St Kilda was once occupied by the Yalukit William Clan which was once part of the Bunurong group. It was only in 1834 the white settlers began occupying Victoria the capital of Melbourne and in 1802 in St Kilda along with the Aboriginal people.

Originally according to archaeologists St Kilda was known as Euro-Yroke named after
the red sandstone which was used to sharpen axes along the beach. St Kilda was
once occupied by the Yalukit William Clan which was once part of the Bunurong
group. It was only in 1834 the white settlers began occupying Victoria the capital of
Melbourne and in 1802 in St Kilda along with the Aboriginal people. The rich marine
resources and large variety of edible plants provided the Bunurong with food.
However, the arrival of the white settlers brought about a devastating effect which in
addition led to massive de population of the Aboriginal people by around 80%.

venues such as The Palais and Luna Park. Many of the 2007 World Aquatics
Championships pen water events were held at St Kilda beach. The beach in St Kilda
also hosts international and state volleyball beach tournaments.

St Kilda is home to majority of Melbourne’s popular attractions and is situated close
to Melbourne CBD. Water sports on St Kilda beach include sailing, rollerblading,
windsurfing, waterskiing, beach volleyball and kite surfing. Another major landmark
and tourist attraction is the St Kilda Pier where traces of Edwardian architecture are
still noted. St Kilda Harbor that is home to the famous Australian penguin colony is
sheltered by the St Kilda’s pier long breakwater. For an interesting walk through
