How to Stay Safe While Playing Online Games Five Tips for Parents

Online games are really fun for children. They offer numerous interesting
features that can make your children play for hours. Well, playing online
games is not always bad since there are educational games that can
increase your children's intelligence. When playing online games, you
should pay attention to the safety aspect. Nowadays, there are some
people who pretend to play games and steal personal information for their
own purposes. How to stay safe while playing online games? Here are some
tips to learn:

1. Educate your children about the risks of online gaming. Your children
should know that bullying may happen in the online gaming. There are some
gamers who harass other players using bad language or pretend to be a
friendly kid who shares gaming tips or gives game points. Your children
should know that these types of gamers exist and hence they should be
more cautious.

2. Accompany your children when they are exploring the online games.
Before playing, check the games' rating first. The ratings of the games
will help you find the most appropriate games for them. When your
children playing the chosen games, sit with them and participate in the
games.

3. Inform your children about the rules for safer gaming. Tell your
children that personal information should not be shared with other
players. Personal information includes real name, age, home address,
pictures and more. In addition, your children should create a strong
password that consists of at least eight characters and includes a mix of
letters and numbers. They must not share their password with anyone
except you. Your children should also know how to create the right gamer
name. It is recommended that children don't use a game-name that divulges
their location, gender and age. For example, a gamer name
"SeattleGirl1991" may indicate that the gamer is a female, located in
Seattle and she was born in 1991. It would be more appropriate to create
a gamer name that doesn't reveal personal information.

4. Use the latest technology to protect your children while playing the
games. Installing antivirus and anti-spyware software in your PC is a
good way to increase the safety. You can also use the family settings to
specify the games that are appropriate to your children and set the time
limits for play.

5. What should your children do when there are problems? Encourage your
children to tell you when they become the object of harassment. However,
make sure that you won't punish them for telling you. Ask your children
to ignore or even block someone who tries to obtain personal information.
