   Jesus!

       April 1-8, 2012
Introduction--Day 1

The story tells us that “Jesus was at Bethany, a guest of Simon the Leper. While he was eating
dinner, a woman came up carrying a bottle of very expensive perfume. Opening the bottle, she
poured it on his head. Some of the guests became furious among themselves. "That's criminal! A
sheer waste! This perfume could have been sold for well over a year's wages and handed out to the
poor." They swelled up in anger, nearly bursting with indignation over her. But Jesus said, "Let her
alone. Why are you giving her a hard time? She has just done something wonderfully significant for
me. You will have the poor with you every day for the rest of your lives. Whenever you feel like it,
you can do something for them. Not so with me. She did what she could when she could—she pre-
anointed my body for burial. And you can be sure that wherever in the whole world the Message is
preached, what she just did is going to be talked about admiringly." (Mark 14:3-9, The Message)

Stories have a way of revealing realities that often go over our heads when just told as a way of
ideas. This story reveals the personal devotion Mary, the woman in the story, showed to Jesus in
preparation for his death at the Cross. Whether she intentionally wanted to communicate something
to her witnesses, we do not know, but her actions were definitively regarded extravagant at best.
The nature of our love is best seen in our actions. Maryʼs actions reveal the fact that she treasured
Jesus beyond any extravagant investment. This is a glimpse of devotion!

This week, we want to consider the matchless worth of Jesus and how we can personally increase
and express our devotion to Him. Really the question for each one of us is, “Am I increasingly
longing for His love, His ways and His Kingdom in my life and in the world?”. Our desire is to lead
our church, our families and households through various avenues by which we can posture our
hearts to consider the passion that led Jesus to the Cross and His Resurrection! And that as we see
that more clearly we would individually and corporately be moved to show our love to Jesus in
extravagant ways.

This booklet is provided to you as a resource to accomplish this objective. Here you will find daily
devotionals, a list of resources you can select from to enhance your focus and cultivate devotion to
Jesus, and a schedule of activities you can consider to participate in this week as a family,
household or individually. As you join us in this focused effort I encourage you to think of others.
One of the desires Jesus carries in His heart is that as we are touched by His love and transforming
grace that we would become instruments in His ministry of reconciliation. Consider inviting your
friends to Palm and Easter Sundays and/or any of the other opportunities we have scheduled during
the week.

May God bless you with an increase in devotion for His Son and His Kingdom!

Saturday, Day 7

The Son Humbled himself and has Received a Name that is
Above Every Name.

Reading for today: Philippians 2:3-11

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count
others more significant than yourselves.  Let each of you look
not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ
Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count
equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by
taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
And being found in human form, he humbled himself by
becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the
name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus
every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the
earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the
   glory of God the Father.

Anchoring Truth:
• No one has emptied himself like Jesus did.
• Jesus can rightfully ask for our complete allegiance.
• We can only love because He first loved us.
