     Oklahoma City Bombing

The following story really happened, but the measurements of mass (grams = g), volume (liters = L), time
(seconds = s) and distance (meters = m) were not reported as shown below. The numbers shown below
are awkward because the prefixes used are not appropriate for the sizes of the measurements. Memorize
the table below (it is the same as Table 2.2 except a fourth column has been added), participate in the
discussion on conversions, and answer the questions at the end of the reading.

In April, 1995, Timothy McVeigh loaded a Ryder rental van with bombs made from 108 bags of
explosive-grade ammonium nitrate fertilizer weighing 23,000,000 mg each, 2.1 x 10-5 ML of liquid
nitromethane, several hundred pounds of diesel fuel (at least 9.3 x 104 dL) and fuses. He drove to
downtown Oklahoma City, parked the van in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, set a
300,000 ms delayed fuse and drove away. The resulting explosion killed 168 people, destroyed or
damaged 324 buildings and caused $652 millions dollars in damage. The effects of the blast were
equivalent to over 2,300,000 g of TNT, and could be heard and felt up to 89,000 m away. Seismometers
at Science Museum Oklahoma in Oklahoma City, 6.9 x 109 m away, and in Norman, Oklahoma,
2,590,000 cm away, recorded the blast as measuring approximately 3.0 on the Richter scale. Timothy
McVeigh was angry over the government’s treatment of a religious sect, the Branch Davidians, in Waco,
Texas, two years earlier. The investigation was the largest criminal investigation case in American
history. Timothy McVeigh was captured, tried and executed for his crimes.
