VICE PRESIDENT of UNIVERSITY ADVANCEMENT
Christopher Newport University in Virginia invites applications for the position of Vice President of University
Advancement. The Vice President reports directly to the President, former U.S. Senator Paul Trible, and is responsible for
planning, coordinating and directing the fundraising and alumni programs for the University. The Vice President provides
leadership in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of resources from individuals, foundations, corporations, and
governmental sources in the continuing development of private support for the University. The Vice President is responsible
for the annual, major, and planned giving programs, corporate and foundation relations, and alumni relations. The Vice
President will assume a leadership role in directing a comprehensive fundraising campaign.
CNU is a selective, residential public university of 4,800 students located in the heart of the Virginia Tidewater and within a
short distance of both Colonial Williamsburg and the ocean resort of Virginia Beach. Dedicated to liberal learning and a
community of honor, CNU offers baccalaureate programs through the College of Art and Humanities, the College of Natural
and Behavioral Sciences, and the College of Social Sciences. The Fall 2010 freshman class of nearly 1,200 students was
selected from over 8,000 applicants and has earned an average SAT of 1200. Today, 3,000 students live on campus,
including 95 percent of all freshmen and sophomores. CNU is in the late stages of completing nearly $650 million in new
The successful candidate will have an extensive and proven record in developing, implementing, and managing a full range
of fundraising programs; demonstrated experience in managing people and resources to meet desired goals; excellent verbal
and written communications skills; be a creative team builder with excellent leadership skills; must have the ability to work
effectively with faculty, staff, students, volunteers, general public, community, business and political leaders; possess a
strong passion and appreciation for the vision and values of the University and have demonstrated skills in articulating that
passion clearly and persuasively; have significant experience in working with Boards and volunteers and developing their
potential as fundraisers; and be able to work flexible hours and occasionally travel. Preference will be given to candidates
with direct experience in developing and leading comprehensive campaigns to include prospecting, conducting feasibility
studies, working with senior management, and producing campaign materials; proven experience in directing planned,
special, and event fundraising programs; and a proven track record in enhancing financial support through fundraising
efforts. The successful candidate must embrace a high level of personal and professional integrity. A master’s degree in a
relevant field or a bachelor’s degree and work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree is required.
