Unit 6      Ch. 1     Lesson 1a

Function: Describing location of objects in space

Materials: Puppet, activity pictures for each pair of students to play card game, paper
and pencil for each student for Give One, Get One.

Review Behavior Standards: Be Respectful, Solve Problems,
Make Good Learning Decisions

Lesson Objective: Students will be able to use prepositions (in the middle, behind, next
to, in front of, on, outside, inside) in order to describe the location of an object.

Build on prior knowledge: Model “Give One, Get One” with acronyms (e.g. ELD,
SUV, USA).
Students play “Give One, Get One” with vehicles – list or sketch vehicles they know on
the left side of their paper. Students share their lists with a partner – if the partner has
listed a vehicle they don’t have on their paper, they add it to the “Get One” side of their
paper.

Presentation: (I Do It) Echo Repeat with a puppet and display dialogue with
prepositions listed to choose from.
A: This is a ____________.                e.g. A: This is a motorcycle.
Where is the _______?                          Where is the motorcycle?
B: The ______ is ________.                     B: The motorcycle is on the street.

Practice: (We Do It) Echo Repeat above dialogue with teacher and student volunteers.
Teacher displays a card and says part A of the dialogue. A student volunteer says part B
of the dialogue.

Apply and Extend: (You Do It) Card Game with Activity Pictures
Students put pictures in a pile. Person A selects a card and says the A part of the
dialogue. Person B responds with the B part of the dialogue.

Function: Describing characteristics of objects

Materials: Puppet, picture cards

Review Behavior Standards: Be Respectful, Solve Problems,
Make Good Learning Decisions

Lesson Objective: Students will be able to use adjectives in order to describe
characteristics of an object.

Build on prior knowledge: Riddles (see pg. 236)

Presentation: (I Do It) Echo Repeat and display sentence frame with possible adjectives.
Puppet displays a picture card and says, “What is it?”
Teacher says, “It is a ___ ______.”e.g. “It is a fast racecar.”

Practice: (We Do It) Echo Repeat and have students Think, Pair, Share to come up with
more adjectives that could be used to complete the sentence frame. Teacher write the

Apply and Extend: (You Do It) Vieja Inez
Student is chosen to be Vieja/o Inez and leaves the room. All students are given a picture
card to hide behind their backs. When Vieja/o Inez re-enters the room, she/he points to a
student and asks, “Do you have a ____?” The student responds with (Yes/No), I (do/do
not) have a ______.” If the answer is yes, the student with the requested vehicle becomes
Vieja Inez and leaves the room as the cards are redistributed among the students in the
room.

Function: Describing the purpose of an object

Materials: Puppet, Picture Dictionaries, Picture Cards

Review Behavior Standards: Be Respectful, Solve Problems,
Make Good Learning Decisions

Lesson Objective: Students will be able to use the verb phrase “is used to”
in order to describe the purpose of an object.

Build on prior knowledge: Picture Dictionary Relay
Students are placed in as many teams as there are picture dictionaries. First student in
each team races to find the given vehicle in the dictionary and when finding the given
vehicle will complete the sentence frame, “This is a ____ ____.” (e.g. “This is a large
submarine.”)

Presentation: (I Do It) Echo Repeat
Puppet asks, “What is a ____ used for?”
Teacher responds, “A ___ is used for ____.” Students echo repeat.
Teacher responses are added under the sentence frame.

Practice: (We Do It) Echo Repeat
Teacher chooses a card. Students ask, “What is a ___ used for?
Teacher responds, “A ____ is used for ____.” Students echo repeat.
Teacher responses are added under the sentence frame.
