Help us Welcome our newest Academic Advisor! Ms. Rochelle Jefferson, LMSW recently joined our
School of Social Work staff as our new BSW WOW! program academic advisor. Ms. Jefferson has
worked both in public and private schools as an academic advisor. Her professional background also
includes employment as a clinical therapist, Headstart Mental Health Consultant, and maternal and
infant health program staffer. Ms. Jefferson can be reached in the SSW by calling 313-577-4409.

Attention BSW/MSW student: The graduation list for the winter 2012 term is available please go to the
following http://sswgraduation.pbworks.com to verify the spelling of your name. You will need to
become a member and reset your password. When you have completed these steps go to the “edit”
page and locate your name. If your name is spelled correctly type your initials next to the name, if it is
spelled incorrectly please type the correct spelling next to the original name, the list will be available
until March 14, 2012. Should you have any questions please contact Andrea King-Jimenez at (313) 577-
4409.

The START Program
The SSW START Program for the month of February is featuring the career area of Medical Social
Work. The Medical Social Work START event will take place Friday, February 24, 2012 from 5:30pm to
7:00pm in Room 150 Thompson Home. Please RSVP to attend this event by calling the SSW Office of
Student Services at (313) 577-4409. We hope to see you there at this informative event!

Save the Dates – Important Events In March – Celebrate Social Work Month

The Sixth Annual Dean’s Diversity Lecture is scheduled Thursday, March 22, 2012 from 2:00pm-
4:00pm at the Partrich Auditorium at the WSU Law School. The lecture; Culture-and Gender-Sensitive
Regulation of Anger will be presented by Antonio Gonzalez-Prendes, Professor, School of Social
Work. This event is free of charge and has been approved by the Michigan Social Work Continuing
Education Collaborative for 2 Continuing Education Contact Hours. No pre-registration is required. For

The annual awards luncheon hosted by the Alumni Association will be held Friday, March 23, 2012,
from 11:30am-1:00pm at the McGregor Memorial Conference Center. To be honored are Alumnus of
the year, Ryan Hertz and Citizen of the Year, Representative Rashida Tlaib. Alumni interested in
attending the March 23rd luncheon should contact Julie Alter-Kay at (313) 577-4464 to
RSVP. Registration fee is $25, which includes a buffet luncheon.

The SSW CyberMentors are Proud to Announce their 2012 Cyber Summit!
The Cyber Summit is an event to raise awareness about cyberbullying. Have you or someone you know
ever been the victim of cyberbullying? Are you curious to learn more about how to combat online
harassment? Would you like to learn how community leaders are advocating for change? Join us for an
inspirational presentation on Thursday, March 8, 2012 at 2:45pm-4:30pm in Room 289 Student Center
Building with Special Guests: Detroit City Council Member, Ms. Saunteel Jenkins, MSW and Mr. Kevin
Epling, National Co-Director of Bully Police USA

The Blackstone LaunchPad (BLP) in partnership with Non-Profit Enterprise at Work (NEW) will be
holding a series of workshops to teach students the basics in setting up their social enterprise. If you
would like to learn more about entrepreneurship and service on non-profit Boards, please plan to
attend Introduction to Board Service, March 1, 2012, 12:00noon-1:00pm, UGL, Community Room. This
session will cover why you should join a board, why you need a board, and how to select and use a
