PIEp Research School. All of the engaged external supervisors and experts have
substantial experience in taking research results to commercialization.
On top of the carefully selected research projects, IDRE also works with:
   Supporting courses and literature. A textbook on innovation driven research with
    widely international co-authorship was published during 2010. A short course on
    IPR rights was arranged during a workshop in October 2010.
   Framework and mechanisms for research student supervision and coaching by
    engaging all the student supervisors in a network and by occasionally engaging
    external experts and the steering group members. Two workshops have been held,
    with third to be held at Uppsala University during the winter 2011 to potentially
    extend the IDRE network and concept to the highly innovative research taking
    place at the EE department.
   Activities towards finding additional funding schemes to facilitate the engagement
    of new students upon graduation of the current students.
The points above are of generic nature in the sense that we expect that other product
domains, technology areas and actors (other departments, other universities…) also
will adopt the concept of innovation driven research education. To facilitate this take-
up, PIEp offers doctoral courses to support the right hand side innovation stream as
depicted in the figure above. For institutions and programs that want to enter a more
innovative research education path, we are in the process of designing an offer on
workshops and networking to introduce, initialize and catalyse the implementation of
an IDRE process in the respective environment. This would lead to an extended PIEp
IDRE audience, which PIEp would maintain as an active global IDRE network to the
benefit of all involved.
In 2011, a longitudinal process research effort will be started to investigate, monitor,
improve and draw conclusions on the IDRE research education concept and process.


Most important result
PIEp IDRE PhD student Märta Lewander became the first graduate of IDRE when
she successfully defended her PhD thesis "Laser Absorption Spectroscopy of Gas in
Scattering Media" on Friday 17 December. See further the enclosed case story.
In a recent e-mail from Märta, asking for some IDRE brochure material from the
IDRE project manager, she writes (quote translated from Swedish):
“…I have now started a new research employment with close connection to applying
research in industry – in this case the metal industry. As an IDRE graduate, I see
myself possessing extra competence thanks to the fact that user and innovation
thinking has been present in all processes during my PhD studies. This I consider to
be an extra good merit different from what would have been the case with a more
classical PhD study…”
