Changes occur in our skin as we age. Wrinkles, age spots, and
dryness are some of the more common skin issues we will
have to deal with as we grow older. The fat below the skin will
also become less substantial as we grow older and this will
make wrinkles more noticeable. Skin will also become less
elastic as it ages and healing can take more time than usual.
Fortunately, there are products and procedures which can help
address these issues.

One way to delay skin aging is to avoid excessive sun
exposure. The sun is strongest between 10 am and 3 pm so
you should wear protective clothing like hats and sunglasses
during this time. You should put on broad spectrum sunscreen
lotion with SPF 15 or better. Re-application may be necessary if
you sweat a lot or after bathing. There are also skin care
products you can use to delay the onset of skin aging, lighten
sunspots, and make wrinkles less noticeable. Products that
contain antioxidants, retinoid, alpha hydroxy acids are effective
for these purposes.

                       The options for skin rejuvenating
treatments continue to expand and a
lot of them do not require going under
the knife. Chemical peel is an
example of these procedures and this
involves the removal of the topmost
layer of the skin to reveal newer,
                       better looking skin. Chemical peels
                       help make wrinkles less noticeable
and make the skin appear smooth.

Another procedure that many individuals want performed for

them to have a more youthful appearance is called
dermabrasion. As the name implies, it uses the process of
abrasion to strip the uppermost layer of dead skin cells to
reveal a new, younger looking one. It makes use of diamonds,
crystals, or organic grains as the abrading material. An even
newer skin resurfacing option is through the use of lasers.
Control of wounding is much accurate with laser resurfacing
than with dermabrasion procedures.

Hyaluronic acid injections may also be used to make facial lines
less noticeable by adding volume just below skin. Hyaluronic
acid, also called hyaluronan, is a kind of glycosaminoglycan
that is distributed widely throughout connective, epithelial, and
neural tissues in the body. The effects of hyaluronic acid
injections may last for 6 months. Traditionally hyaluronic acid
injections were done by inserting hypodermic needle under the
skin to deliver the substance.

This method however, apart from being painful, resulted to
bruises. This is no longer the case today, as a new approach
which makes use of blunt-tip microcannula lessens the trauma
associated with this treatment. In this approach, a needle will
still be used to pierce the dermis, but it will no longer be
advanced deeper into the skin. Instead, an atraumatic blunt-tip
microcannula is inserted to deliver the hyaluronan.
