Gempa bermagnitudo 7,4 mengguncang Meksiko, Selasa (20/3/2012) waktu setempat. Ratusan
rumah dilaporkan rusak dan puluhan lainnya hancur di kawasan dekat pusat gempa.

Badan Survei Geologi AS (USGS) melaporkan, pusat gempat berada di kawasan perbatasan
antara Negara Bagian Guerrero dan Oaxaca, sekitar 322 kilometer sebelah selatan ibu kota
Mexico City, pada kedalaman 20 kilometer. Gempa terjadi saat tengah hari, pukul 12.02 waktu
setempat atau pukul 01.02, Rabu (21/03/2012) WIB.

Saat gempa terjadi, putri pertama Presiden AS Barack Obama, Malia (13), sedang berlibur di
kota wisata Oaxaca, yang berjarak 162 kilometer dari pusat gempa. Namun, pihak Gedung Putih
melaporkan Malia dan teman-temannya selamat.

Di Mexico City, gedung-gedung tinggi terasa bergoyang. Sambungan listrik dan telepon sempat
terputus. Sebuah jembatan penyeberangan orang roboh menimpa sebuah bus kota yang
kosong, melukai satu orang pejalan kaki.

Bandara internasional dan jalur kereta monorail di kota tersebut juga sempat dituutp
sementara, tetapi kemudian dioperasikan kembali setelah semua dinyatakan aman dan tak ada
kerusakan.

Gubernur Guerrero Angel Aguirre mengatakan, sedikitnya 800 rumah rusak di wilayahnya dan
sekitar 60 rumah roboh akibat gempa tersebut. Namun, hingga saat ini tidak dilaporkan
jatuhnya korban jiwa.

Ini adalah salah satu gempa terkuat di Meksiko setelah gempa bermagnitudo 8,1 mengguncang
Mexico City pada 1985, menewaskan puluhan ribu orang. Meksiko adalah negara yang sering
dilanda gempa. Tercatat 15 gempa bermagnitudo di atas 7 terjadi sejak 1973 dalam radius 500
kilometer dari pusat gempa terakhir ini.


Devastating earthquake shakes Mexico

Bermagnitudo 7.4 earthquake shook Mexico, Tuesday (20/03/2012) local time. Hundreds of
homes were reported destroyed and dozens more were destroyed in the region near the
epicenter.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the epicenter was in the border region
between the State of Guerrero and Oaxaca, about 322 kilometers south of the capital Mexico
City, at a depth of 20 kilometers. The quake occurred at midday, at 12:02 local time or 1:02 pm,
Wednesday (21/03/2012) pm.
When an earthquake occurs, the first daughter of U.S. President Barack Obama, Malia (13), was
vacationing in the resort town of Oaxaca, which is 162 kilometers from the epicenter. However,
the White House reported Malia and his friends survived.

In Mexico City, tall buildings seemed to rock. Electricity and telephone connection was
disconnected. A pedestrian bridge crashing down an empty city bus, injuring one pedestrian.

International airports and railway lines in the city's monorail was also closed temporarily, but
then operated again after all it is safe and no damage.

Guerrero governor Angel Aguirre said at least 800 homes were damaged in the region and
about 60 houses collapsed in the quake. However, to date no reported casualties.

This is one of the strongest earthquake in Mexico after a 8.1 earthquake shook Mexico City
bermagnitudo in 1985, killing tens of thousands of people. Mexico is a country frequently hit by
earthquakes. Bermagnitudo recorded 15 earthquakes above 7 occurred since 1973 within a
radius of 500 kilometers from the epicenter past.
