Occupational Health & Safety
To achieve our desired outcome, you will:
Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, related Regulations and defined OH&S policies, procedures,
safety rules and Safe Working Procedures and implement and monitor the organisation’s OH&S policies, procedures,
safety rules and programs in the relevant work area to achieve and maintain OH&S standards.
Monitor health and safety performance and rehabilitation performance within your area of responsibility and initiate
actions to improve health and safety, including facilitating rehabilitation of injured workers.
Review any health and safety related reports and take appropriate action to resolve safety issues.
Ensure consultation with employee health and safety representatives, particularly on any workplace changes that have
health and safety implications.
Actively monitor the workplace to determine presence of hazards and take appropriate action to rectify any hazards
Ensure all employees understand their legal obligation under the OH&S Act and that they receive regular training to
perform jobs safely.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:
Assist in receiving of applications for building permits.
Under supervision carry out examination of applications for Building permits with respect to the
construction of new buildings, alterations, repairs and change of occupancy in existing
buildings in accordance with the provisions of the Building Act 1993, the Building Regulations
1994 and other relevant legislation.
Attend counter and telephone enquiries from residents, proprietors, public authorities or other
persons, and ensure the maintenance of good community relations.
Assist in the administration for the follow up of building permits and approvals that are due to
lapse, or have lapsed.
Develop an understanding of relevant legislative requirements to ensure all responsibilities and
functions are carried out in accordingly.
Prepare files for the administration and enforcement of the provisions of the Act for the building
control officers and any consultants that Council uses.
Participate in professional development opportunities within and outside of Council
Under supervision, assist in carrying out fire safety auditing and enforcement of essential
services maintenance requirements, inspection and enforcement of swimming pool barrier
requirements, reporting, inspection and enforcement of requirements arising from the
subdivision of buildings,
Under supervision, investigate complaints, comments on referrals from other departments,
consent and reports for reporting matters.
Complete set tasks and assist in the administration of the provisions of the Building Act
Assist and advise internal and external customers on building matters such as property
enquiries, private practitioner enquiries, technical issues, Building Permits, Council Consents,
Inspections and other general enquiries as required.
Liaise with other Council departments, responsible statutory authorities, various building industry

Qualifications, Certificates, Licences, and/or Experience:
Post Secondary qualification in Building Surveying with some working knowledge.
Experience in customer service, public administration or other field relevant to work in a local
government building unit.
