Culture Taxi Records presents: Taj Weekes & Adowa
Taj Weekes channels the spirit of Bob Marley, brought up to date for the 21st century.
His high tenor voice and his supernaturally catchy tunes capture the essence of melodic
reggae in a way which recalls the Master at work. From the solid chunky keyboard, the
sly wah-wah guitar, the cooing female chorus and the crystal-clear production, it’s
evident that we are in the company of a Duppy Conqueror, and no mistake.
The super smooth and suspiciously relaxed Weekes grew up in St Lucia, later moving to
New York. With his band Adowa, he made his first album in 2005, which kicked off his
live career and built him a solid fan base. His second release however sees him moving
up to a rarefied level, where the excellence of the compositions is matched by
performance skill. His lyrics deal with contemporary problems and events – the
environment, globalisation - but the melodies are never secondary to the message.
It’s impossible to pick out a lead track – every tune here demands to be put on ‘repeat
play’ – from the melancholy ‘Orphans Cry’ to the irresistible ‘Angry Language’, from the
perky (despite the theme, dealing with humanity's propensity for violence) ‘Since Cain’ to
the obscurely poppy ‘Kink and Crinkle’, every one is a winner. Even the closing ballad
‘Louisiana’, with its sparse piano accompaniment, lingers long after the final chords have
died away.
As your Culture Taxi driver drops you off after your latest trip and disappears in a cloud
of suspiciously pungent smoke, the melodies are ringing in your ears and burrowing their
way into your brain. An herbal remedy is called for! Where’s your luggage gone? Quick,

Reviews:
United Reggae Magazine : The picture postcard view of reggae from the mainstream is
of a sunny, relentlessly upbeat genre, full of promises that everything will be “irie”.
Homegrown Musicnetwork: Weekes has now emerged with DEIDEM (meaning “All Of
Us”), a meditation on confronting the fragmentation of the world and the search to give
everyone a voice in it. Weekes exclaims, “Whether it’s Darfur, the Middle East, global
warming…there’s something going on in every part of the world and we’re trying to bring
it all together on one album.
