                                      Philosophy
We will employ an aggressive, attacking defense. The focus will be on teaching sound
tackling fundamentals, creating turnovers, getting 11 hats on the ball and forcing the
offense into 4th down situations.


                                        Scheme
We will use a 3-4 defensive scheme. We will use one base front and stunt and blitz out of
that front to create confusion and conflicts within the offense. In the secondary, we will
utilize a 4 spoke secondary with a rotating cover 3 as the base coverage, but also using
man and man free coverages when necessary.


                                      Personnel
The defense will consist of 3 down linemen, 2 outside linebackers, 2 inside linebackers, 2
corners, and 2 safeties.

Defensive Line: Aggressive
The three down linemen should be tough and aggressive. The should be big enough to
control the Line of scrimmage and not get blown off the ball. The nose guard should be
able to shoot a gap quickly, get on the center and control both A gaps when needed.

Outside Linebackers: Tough
Sam, strong side end, should be in between a LB and a DT size wise. He needs to be able
to control the outside shoulder of the Tight end, and be able to successfully take on a kick
out block by a FB or Guard. He will occasionally be asked to line up as a linebacker, so
he will also need to be athletic.
Bandit, weak side end, should be LB size or maybe a big DB. He must be smart, athletic
and tough. He will be one of the better football players on the team. He must be able to
play in open space in pass coverage.

Inside Linebackers: Best Tacklers
Mike will be the strong side ILB. He will be tough and smart. He will make the huddle
and running strength call for the Defense. He must be quick to flow to the ball and must
be able to take a good pass drop.
Will will be the weak side linebacker. He must be football conscience. He will notify the
huddle about down and distance while Mike is getting the call from the sideline. He must
be slightly quicker than Mike, b/c he will have a long pass drop. He must also be tough
enough to take on and ISO block from a full back

Corners: Best in Coverage
Smart, Athletic and quick. Must be able to read flow and get to their pass drop. They
must also be able to take a good pursuit angle to make a touchdown saving tackle.
Safeties: Smart and Athletic
Free Safety will be the quarterback of the secondary. He will align the corners and make
the proper coverage and passing strength calls. He must be smart, aggressive and a sure
tackler. He must also be able to fill the alley on an outside play to the weak side.
Rover, or strong safety, will be aggressive and athletic. He will be a little bigger and
stronger than the Free Safety and will be primarily a run support player, but must also be
able to play a deep third and man-to-man on either a Tight End or a wide out. He must
also be able to blitz on occasion

                               Huddle Procedure
The Huddle will be set a yard and a half behind the Line of Scrimmage by the nose guard
and will look like this:

Once huddle is set by the nose, Will will set the huddle by saying “TEAM” from that
point until Mike gets to the huddle all is quiet. He will inform the huddle of the down and
distance, being up beat and positive while Mike is getting the call from the head coach on
the sideline. Mike gets the call then resets the huddle by saying “GATORS” He then
gives the defensive call twice. The team then breaks the huddle with Hit.
I.E. – Will says “TEAM!! It’s 2nd and 6; they’ll either run or pass. Let’s get ‘em.” Mike
enters and says “GATORS!! Okie Mike X Zone, Okie Mike X Zone, Ready…” and team
responds, “HIT.”
                              Strength Recognition
We will use two strength calls: Passing and Running. The Mike and Will will make the
running strength calls with a right or left call. The Rover will make the passing strength
call with Ringo or Lucky.

Zone:
Zone – Rotating Cover 3 With the Flats being covered by either Corner or Safety
depending on the alignment of the widest receiver. Rotation will be determined by Flow

Cloud – Predetermined Corner run Support w/ Corners covering Flats and Safeties taking
deep halves

Sky - Predetermined Safety run Support w/ Safeties covering Flats and Corners taking
deep halves

Man:
Free – Man Free

Man – Man to Man
          Defensive Line: Nose and Defensive Tackles

Stance:
The defensive linemen should all use the same basic stance. The stance should be a 3 or 4
point, balanced stance, with about 1/3 of their weight on their hands. This will allow them
to get vertical movement into the offensive linemen. Their feet should be even with each
other so as not to tip off the direction of the stunt we are performing. You should see the
ball out of the corner of your eye.

Alignment:
Our base will be a head up alignment. This means that you will be responsible for reading
the head of the OL. The DL should align at anywhere from right on the ball to 2’ off the
ball depending on the call. Align closer to the ball with short yard situations and deeper
when slanting. If you hear a Shade call after the naming of the front, then you will align
shading the OL in the direction of your gap.

Gap Responsibilities:
DL will not have a gap responsibility unless they are slanting or shaded. We will read the
OL in front of you to determine where you will go on the snap of the ball and your
responsibility.

Reads:
The DL will begin by learning how to react to the OL’s movement. Against any of these
actions, except the double team and down block, the DL should:
        1. Create separation from the OL
        2. Read hat
        3. Find the ball
        4. Go to the ball.

  Lineman Action         Where the Ball will be/What the play is/What you should do
Down Block             DT: Get pressure on the outside shoulder of the OL. Do not let
                       him free release to the LB. Then:
                          1. Outside Pressure: Fight the pressure, the ball is going to
                                the outside.
                          2. No Outside Pressure: It’s a trap. See below.
Reach Block            Ball will be outside of your OL. Defeat block and get to the ball
Turn Out               Ball is inside of your OL, Defeat block and get to the ball.
Double Team            Ball is coming to you. (See below)
High Hat/ Release      Pass: Get to the QB and make a sack
Defeating the Trap:
Put pressure on the down blocker so he doesn’t get a free release to the LB. Once you
read trap do the following to “Trap the Trapper”:
    1. Close on the blocker.
    2. On contact, step with your outside leg to the trapper’s inside leg
    3. Dip your outside shoulder, and rip your outside arm through the inside leg of the
        trapper.

Defeating the Double Team:
Once you feel pressure from the double team, fight the pressure without giving ground.
Get skinny to try to defeat the double team to get to the ball. If you start to lose ground
make a pile in the hole. This is only to be used as a last resort.

Stunts and Techniques:
The following are the stunts that will be called. For all stunts, with the exception of Stud
and Wham, the following technique will be used:
   1. Beat your man off the ball on movement.
   2. Rip through and under to get into your gap
   3. Penetrate your gap to the heel of the OL
   4. Move down to line to the ball

The technique for Stud and Wham is as follows:
       V/S a TE:
       1. Open with your outside foot like you are pulling.
       2. Allow the DE to get cross your face.
       3. Loop tight off of his hip to the outside
       4. Keep Contain

          W/ No TE:
          1. Rip your inside arm through.
          2. Get outside
          3. Keep contain

Stunts:
          Slant: The DL will stunt to the hip of the strong side OL

Calls:
Mike will make the running strength call, Right or left based on the following:
      1. Tight End
      2. Number of Receivers
      3. Wide Side of Field
      4. Left

This strength call will tell you where you are lining up and which direction you are
stunting.

Stem:
By making a stem call, the Mike will tell the DL to shift into the proper alignment prior
to the snap of the ball.

Drills
                   Inside Linebackers: Mike and Will

Stance:
Both ILBs will be in a balanced stance. Your feet should be slightly inside shoulder width
with the knees bent at approximately 35 degrees. Back should be bent at the hips slightly
leaning toward the LOS with their shoulders over the bottom edge of their thigh pads.
Arms should hang loosely between your legs. DO NOT REST YOUR HANDS ON
YOUR THIGHS!!! Your weight should be on the balls of your feet, but not on your toes.
Your head should be up with your eyes on your guard and the QB.

Alignment:
Both ILBs should align at a depth of 4½ to 5 yards behind the LOS. Mike and will should
be in 30 techs, placing your head on the outside shoulder of the offensive guard

Responsibilities
You are primarily responsible for the B gap toward you. If the key tells you that the ball
is going across the center, then you shuffle to secure backside cutback on runs away.

Reads:
ILBs will read both the guards and the backs, but we will begin by teaching to read the
guards, because they will give us the truest reads. Always think run first. You will take
two short “read” steps forward and then react to your keys.

Walk:
A walk call given to the LB’s will tell them to walk up into their gap. This will usually
only be done with a blitz to show blitz, but may be done to bluff a blitz. The LB’s should
not walk up any deeper than the hip of the down lineman.

Bama:
A Bama call will indicate to the Sam or Bandit that they must move out on a wide
receiver.
Stem:
By making a stem call, the Mike will tell the DL to shift into the proper alignment prior
to the snap of the ball.

Drills

Agility Drills:
                                     Bag Shuffle and Fill
Purpose: To teach LB’s proper body positioning and multi directional movement
Description: 4 agility bags are placed parallel to each other with a yard in between each.
The LB’s all line up at one end of the bags facing the long edge of the bags, and on ball
movement step forward and shuffle laterally left to right or right to left through the bags
until the end. At the end, the players can recover a fumble or simply restart the line.
After at least two reps for each player, the drill then is repeated with the players lining up
perpendicular to the length of the bags and charging forward and backpedaling through
the gauntlet. This drill can also be done with a bag and having the players make
contact/attack a blocking bag to simulate filling their gap responsibility.

Coaching Points: Make sure that the LB’s are in proper position to start, and stay in that
position throughout the movement. Keep eyes up, chest out and don’t look at their feet as
they are moving, always ready for contact. When shuffling, they are never to cross their
feet or open their hips. When filling a hole, they need to have forward body lean into the
contact, and depending on whether we are working tackling or shedding, either wrapping
up or delivering a solid blow with eyes always open.

Equipment: A ball, 4 agility bags, and a shield or tackling dummy.

Stance:
Both Ends will be in a balanced stance. Your feet should be slightly inside shoulder width
with the knees bent at approximately 35 degrees. Back should be bent at the hips slightly
leaning toward the LOS with their shoulders over the bottom edge of their thigh pads.

Alignment:
Both Ends should align on the LOS. You should be in 9 techs or Ghost 9 Techs, with
your inside foot splitting the TE’s crouch, with the following exceptions:

Run Responsibilities:
DE’s will be responsible for alley pursuit. You will slow play QB on all options. Make
them keep the ball as long as possible, but do not give ground. This means that the ends
will be responsible for the outside gap, C or D.

Pass Responsibilities:
Sam is primarily a run defenders, and will not be asked to take a pass drop unless the
offense is lined up in an OpenTrips or Empty formation. (No TE and at least 3 receivers
to one side.)
Bandit will be responsible for BS flats or hook to curl. However, usually, the only players
who can threaten the area are running backs, either lined up in the backfield or lined up in
a slot, so the Bandit should always seek to engage a running back trying to enter the flat
while still keeping contain. Bandit will also align on the inner most receiver with a
spread, Pro Twins, or Tight Trips formation.

Reads:
DEs will read the nearest lineman, and will have 4 basic reads. However, you should
react to the reads the same way. The reads will truly only help you find the ball. You
should follow these steps:
    1. Attack and control the outside shoulder of the lineman on movement.
    2. Make your read while maintaining outside leverage.
    3. Defeat the block
    4. Go to the ball and make the tackle.

Defeating the kickout: Close on Blocker, (Guard or FB), Stalemate and drive him up field
forcing the play inside of you.

Flow Away: Check to make sure it’s not a counter, check the QB for Boot (don’t let him
outside of you), get 2 yards deep checking for reverse, once play crosses the LOS, take
proper pursuit angle to the ball.

Blitzes and Techniques:
The following are all calls in which Sam, Bandit or both will blitz. Otherwise, the DE’s
will control the LOS. Descriptions will be below, and drawings will be on the attached
page.

Calls
Mike will make the running strength call, Right or left based on the following:

This Call will tell the Sam and Bandit where to align, but they should be looking
themselves.
Bama:
A Bama call will indicate to the Sam or Bandit that they must move out on the inner most
wide receiver to the weak side.

Stem:
By making a stem call, the Mike will tell the DL to shift into the proper alignment prior
to the snap of the ball.
                                         Corners
Stance:
Corners will be in a balanced stance with their inside foot slightly behind the outside foot.
The toes of the inside foot should be at approximately the instep of the outside foot. Your
knees should be bent slightly with your weight over the balls of your feet. Hands should
be up and ready to come in contact with the receiver. Your eyes should be up and on the
QB in Zone, Sky, or Cloud Coverage and on your receiver in Man or Free Coverage.

Alignment:
Zone, Sky, Cloud, Free, and Man Coverage: See the attached chart.

“PRESS” Call: Against a receiver, you will align on the LOS. Your outside foot should
be placed so that it is splitting the crotch of the wide receiver.
With no wide receiver, you should align 5-7 yards off the LOS and 1-2 yards outside the
EMLOS.

Coverages:
Zone Coverages:
Our base coverage will be a 3 deep zone with either Safeties or Corners covering the flats
depending on how the widest receiver is aligned.
If there is a wide receiver lined up more than 5 yards outside the EMLOS, then we will
make a “SKY” call. This will declare that the Safeties will have Force responsibilities on
a run. This means that they will be responsible for the pitch on an option and will be
responsible for “forcing” the outside run back to the inside. A run read will be discussed
below. The Corner has “Secondary Force” meaning that he has Force if the Safety does
not Force the play inside. The Corner also has deep 3rd responsibility regardless of to
which side the play flows.
If there is a wide receiver lined less than 5 yards outside the EMLOS, or there is just a
TE, then we will make a “CLOUD” call. This will declare that the Corners will have
Force responsibilities on a run. This means that they will be responsible for the pitch on
an option and will be responsible for “forcing” the outside run back to the inside. A run
read will be discussed below.

With a pass read, we will be in 4 deep quarters coverage. This read will be discussed
below.


Sky:
Automatic Safeties force and flat. Pass read does not change. Corner has deep third.

Cloud:
Automatic Corner force and flat. Pass read does not change. Safety has deep third.

Man Coverages:
Man:
Corners will be matched on the #1 receiver in man coverage.

Free:
Corners will be matched on the #1 receiver in man coverage.

Calls:
Corners will get 5 Calls that they are responsible for knowing:
SKY: This call from the Safety will tell the Corner that the Safety to his side has
“FORCE” responsibilities. Corner will have Deep Third and “Secondary Force”.

CLOUD: This call from the Safety will tell the Corner that the Corner has “Primary
Force” responsibilities v/s a “Run” read. The Corner will also be responsible for the play
side flat.

PRESS: This will be used with Cloud, Man, and Free Coverages. This will tell the
Corners to change their alignment to the LOS on top on the #1 receiver, and to hinder the
receiver’s release.

ROTATE: This will tell the Rover to rotate to the passing strength of the offense. This
call can be made either from the sideline with the calling of the defense, or can be
predetermined and automatic as game planned per week.

STRENGTH:
A passing strength call will be made by the Free Safety. This call will tell the Rover
where to align based on the following:
       1. Number of Receivers
       2. Slot Receiver
       3. Tight End
       4. Wide Side of Field
       5. Left

Reads:
Zone: We will read QB, ball, then receiver to determine where we will go. If the QB and
the ball stay in A or B Gap, we will remain in quarters coverage staying deeper than the
deepest man in your zone. If the QB and ball go outside of B Gap then either the Safety,
Sky, or the Corner, Cloud, will become the FORCE player, FORCING the play to the
inside and taking pitch on the option. When doing this, corners must maintain and outside
– in relationship to the ball. If the play becomes a pass, then you are the flat defender.

Sky: With a Sky call you read QB, ball to #1 Receiver v/s a wide out or a tight end.
Cloud: With a Cloud call, you read QB, ball, #2 Receiver. If #2 goes to the flat, then alert
Safety to your side and jump #2. If #2 goes vertical, then alert safety and jump #1.

Man or Free: Read #1 to QB to Ball
Run and Pass Responsibilities:
DB Chart of Responsibilities.
               Rover (Strong Safety) and Free Safety
Stance:
Safeties will be in a balanced stance with their inside foot slightly behind the outside foot.
The toes of the inside foot should be at approximately the instep of the outside foot. Your
knees should be bent slightly with your weight over the balls of your feet. Hands should
be up and ready to come in contact with the receiver. Your eyes should be up and on the
QB in Zone, Sky, or Cloud Coverage and on your receiver in Man or Free Coverage.

Alignment:
Zone, Sky, Cloud, Free, and Man Coverage: See the attached chart

“PRESS” Call: Safeties will align 0-3 yards inside-outside #2. They should align 7-10
yards off the LOS.

“ROTATE” Call:
Rover: Align 5 yards off the LOS and 1-2 yards outside a TE or 0-2 yards inside a slot
receiver.
Free Safety: Align 8-10 yards off the LOS and head up to outside eye of the Weak side
Guard.

Coverages:
Zone Coverages:
Our base coverage will be a 3 deep zone with either Safeties or Corners covering the flats
depending on how the widest receiver is aligned.
If there is a wide receiver lined up more than 5 yards outside the EMLOS, then we will
make a “SKY” call. This will declare that the Safeties will have Force responsibilities on
a run. This means that they will be responsible for the pitch on an option and will be
responsible for “forcing” the outside run back to the inside. A run read will be discussed
below. The Corner has “Secondary Force” meaning that he has Force if the Safety does
not Force the play inside. The Corner also has deep 3rd responsibility regardless of to
which side the play flows.
If there is a wide receiver lined less than 5 yards outside the EMLOS, or there is just a
TE, then we will make a “CLOUD” call. This will declare that the Corners will have
Force responsibilities on a run. This means that they will be responsible for the pitch on
an option and will be responsible for “forcing” the outside run back to the inside. A run
read will be discussed below.

With a pass read, we will be in 4 deep quarters coverage. This read will be discussed
below.


Sky:
Automatic Safeties force and flat. Pass read does not change. Corner has deep third.
Cloud:
Automatic Corner force and flat. Pass read does not change. Safety has deep third.

Man Coverages:
Man:
Rover will be matched on the #2 receiver on strong side in man coverage.
Free will be matched on #2 on weak side in man coverage.

Free:
Rover will be matched on the #2 receiver in man coverage.
Free will be responsible for deep third reading to the ball.

Calls:
Safeties will make and have 5 Calls that they are responsible for knowing:
SKY: This call from the Safety will tell the Corner that the Safety to his side has
“FORCE” responsibilities. Corner will have Deep Third and “Secondary Force”.

CLOUD: This call from the Safety will tell the Corner that the Corner has “Primary
Force” responsibilities v/s a “Run” read. The Corner will also be responsible for the play
side flat.

PRESS: This will be used with Cloud, Man, and Free Coverages. This will tell the
Corners to change their alignment to the LOS on top on the #1 receiver, and to hinder the
receiver’s release.

ROTATE: This will tell the Rover to rotate to the passing strength of the offense. This
call can be made either from the sideline with the calling of the defense, or can be
predetermined and automatic as game planned per week.

STRENGTH:
A passing strength call will be made by the Free Safety. This call will tell the Rover
where to align based on the following:
       1. Number of Receivers
       2. Slot Receiver
       3. Tight End
       4. Wide Side of Field
       5. Left

Reads:
Zone: We will read QB, ball, then receiver to determine where we will go. If the QB and
the ball stay in A or B Gap, we will remain in quarters coverage staying deeper than the
deepest man in your zone. If the QB and ball go outside of B Gap then either the Safety,
Sky, or the Corner, Cloud, will become the FORCE player, FORCING the play to the
inside and taking pitch on the option. When doing this, corners must maintain and outside
– in relationship to the ball. If the play becomes a pass, then you are the flat defender.

Sky: With a Sky call you read QB, ball to #1 Receiver v/s a wide out or a tight end.
Cloud: With a Cloud call, you read QB, ball, #2 Receiver. If #2 goes to the flat, then alert
Safety to your side and jump #2. If #2 goes vertical, then alert safety and jump #1.

Man or Free: Read #1 to QB to Ball
