                                                                Program Introduction

Gator Motorsports UFSAE
The main goal of Gator Motorsports, the University of Florida Society of Automotive
Engineers student chapter, is to provide students an opportunity to go beyond the textbooks
with real-world applications. Here, they gain invaluable experience in managing, designing,
fabricating and evaluating an actual product, that is not only of the highest design caliber, but
also cost effective.
.
Students engineer every system and part on the cars to maximize performance, reliability and
driver safety within their budgetary constraints. Since more than 90% of the vehicles’
components are manufactured in-house by the students, they learn the important link between
each design decision and the manufacturing process.

The projects require interdisciplinary team work and cohesion as seen in real business
environments. This team is comprised of engineering, journalism, mass communications and
business majors who all work together to present a world class car at competition.

There are few student groups which teach such a wide range of skills that are essential for
success in industry. The end result is the opportunity to work on a dedicated team which
achieves remarkable accomplishments with the successful completion of their vehicles.

                                                                                              3
                                                                                 Team Formula

Each year, students from over 140 international
universities design and build open wheel, formula-
style race cars to compete in Formula SAE. Students
are to assume that they have been contracted by a
manufacturing firm to produce a prototype vehicle
intended for sale to the nonprofessional weekend
autocross racer.

These cars must be high performance vehicles, while
remaining reliable, economical and maintainable.
Students are given a strict set of safety restrictions to
follow, but have free reign over the rest of the design
and construction. This makes Formula SAE very
similar to the real life design competitiveness of
engineering corporations and industries. Static Events:

                                                            competitions.
2007-2009 Ninth Place out of 110 teams
2006-2007 Sixth Place out of 130 teams
2005-2006 Eighth Place out of 130 teams
The Competition:
The competition is held annually in Michigan and
is judged by representatives from Ford, GM and
DaimlerChrysler, who focus on the car’s design
and performance through both static and dynamic
events.

Dynamic Events:

Skid-pad…………………………..50 Points
Autocross………………………..150 Points
Endurance……………………….300 Points
Fuel Effiencny……………….......100 Points
                                                                                                  4
                                                                                      Team Baja

The Baja SAE competition includes over 140 teams
from various universities who design, build and
compete in off-road baja-style vehicles that must
survive rough terrain and water. This competition
focuses on the chassis, suspension and powertrain
design of the car, restricting the engine to a standard
ten horsepower Briggs and Stratton unit.

The cars must follow strict safety and cost regulations,
making the design of these cars challenging for student
engineers. These restrictions also make the events very
                                                   competitive.

Students are challenged to design a rugged and reliable
off-road capable car, while still keeping cost and
                                                   maintenance affordable for the costumer.
The Competition: .
Competition is focused on the design and
innovation of cost effective parts, as well as
dynamic events that test the real world function
and reliability of these vehicles.

Gator Motorsports not only takes pride in our
vehicles but also in the fact that we actively seek
ways to share the fundamentals of engineering with
the potential engineers of the future. Our
organization tries its best to diversify our outreach
by hosting events and tours for a variety of
University and after school K-12 programs.

We feel that it is absolutely crucial that we
expose children to engineering and higher
education at the earliest age possible in order to
foster an interest in science and problem solving
that will grow as they mature.

In addition to our continued support of external
programs we also put forth great effort to expand the
knowledge base of our fellow gators. Our program and
vehicles are constantly present at various showcase
fairs and tabling events. Our program regularly
generates high levels of attention and interest from our
                                                        peers.

Also, Gator Motorsports hosts information sessions for
our corporate sponsors. We actively promote these
sessions as a way for students to learn more about our
sponsors and for sponsors to speak with and seek
                                                        potential interns, co-ops, and employees.

One of our most popular events is a joint venture
program with SAE International, A World in
Motion. This program provides elementary and
middle school students the opportunity to tour our
facilities, learn about our projects and be exposed
to some hands-on engineering. Students are placed
in groups and given vehicle component kits with
which they are taught to select the proper size and
location of gears and wheels to meet certain goals.
One such goal the students work to achieve is to
maximize acceleration while maintaining enough
torque to climb a steep hill with their vehicles.
