BETTER CANCER PREVENTION, FASTER CANCER TREATMENT:
MANITOBA ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Manitoba’s wait times for cancer radiation therapy are the shortest in Canada. According to
the Canadian Institute for Health Information, Manitoba leads Canada with a one-week
wait.
The province’s new $3.1-million gamma knife, unveiled last month and already in operation,
is strengthening life-saving treatment of complex cancers. The Health Sciences Centre is
one of only a handful of hospitals in the world to have this state-of-the-art equipment.
Manitoba has invested $7.5 million in a leading-edge, non-invasive surgery technology that
will allow non-invasive treatment of cancers in all parts of the body that would otherwise
require invasive surgery or previously would have been deemed inoperable.
The province has funded seven additional oncology positions at CancerCare Manitoba
since 1999 and continues to boost training opportunities for oncologists in the province.
Manitoba continues to fund more cancer drugs and cover a higher proportion of the costs
for covered drugs than most Canadian provinces.
Manitoba’s comprehensive strategic framework to fight cancer, unveiled last year,
continues to guide health-care professionals and government in enhancing prevention
initiatives and continuing to drive down waits.
