Course tutors:             The Safe Handling Team, Fountaindale Physical Disability Support Service

Target group:              Childcare workers in private, voluntary and independent settings and
                           childminders who need to be well prepared to manage a disabled child

Course level:             All levels
Course information: (please note that if you are accepted on this course and you do not give
sufficient notice of non-attendance for a substitute delegate to be notified, the providers reserve the
right to invoice you or your employer for the cost of this course)
General                 The provision of advice and training related to the Safe Handling of Pupils with a
                        physical impairment is coordinated by the Physical Disability Support Service. The
                        school employs a team of advisors who specialise in delivering advice to school
      supply            based staff on how to assist pupils in carrying out their daily routines. They are
       costs            also responsible for the delivery of Safe Handling training courses.

Course aims
and
learning
outcomes:                The standard course is a two day event and covers the following areas:

                              Legal Requirements
                              Spinal Awareness
                              Musculo-Skeletal Injury
                              Principles of Safe Handling
                              Understanding Disability
                              Assessing Pupil Need
                              Hoists and Sling Techniques
                              Methods of Holding
                              Handling small children/large children and adults with special needs.
Clothing and fitness. When attending the course please ensure that you wear appropriate clothing: non-
slip, enclosed shoes (no boots) and clothes that allow free, unrestricted movement without compromising
modesty….
You must also be sufficiently fit to undertake the practical sessions of the course. These involve physical
activity, handling people and objects. If you are in any doubt as to your fitness for such sessions, do not
participate in them and seek medical advice.
A Refresher Course is required within two years of initial training to ensure continuity of certification in line
with Nottinghamshire LEA Manual Handling Policy
The training events are held at The PDSS base on Fountaindale School campus near Mansfield and
several are run during the term. To enquire about course availability see top of page.
