Ad and Message Lab
Problem: Are nonverbal symbols more important than verbal symbols?
Part I: You will need to observe individuals and groups of people unrelated to you. I suggest you go to
some public location to complete this assignment. Also, you will need to find two advertisements. Complete
the chart below. Find two ads and answer the two questions related to those particular advertisements. Next,
observe two different people and answer the two questions in the chart from your observations. Finally,
observe a group (more than two people) and answering the two questions about your observations. All
information should be answered on this form.
Type What message was being conveyed? How do you know?
(verbal and nonverbal)
Part II: Complete the chart below. After you complete your observations and complete the chart above,
complete the first question in this chart. Next, ask the persons and group you observed what messages they
were sending when you observed them. (i.e. What message does the clothing you are wearing send to
others? Were you happy or upset in the conversation? Etc….)
Type What was your original observation? Was your observation correct?
If not, what is the accurate message?
Part III: Answer the questions below.
1) Do people always convey messages consciously? Are people always communicating? Defend your
answer. 2) Do people always accurately interpret messages? How can you improve this skill? 3) What are
the purposes of advertisements? Do they work? How can you become a better consumer? 4) What is the
difference between verbal and nonverbal communication? What clues can you use to tell how people are
feeling? 5) Who is Dr. Paul Ekman? What is his area of specialty? How would his science help you
understand nonverbal communication?
