                                       2008 NEWSLETTER
Heartland Saddle Club is moving our 2008 horse shows to the Cass County Fairgrounds in Virginia,
IL. There was a conflict with the dates of our 2008 horse shows and other activities scheduled at the Scott Co.
Fairgrounds in Winchester, IL. The Cass Co. fair board graciously offered the use of their fairgrounds for our
2008 shows using our existing dates and HSC members at the Feb. meeting voted to accept their offer. As most
of our members know, Heartland Saddle Club started out in Virginia so we are looking forward to “going
back”. However, we certainly want to thank Scott Co. for their services over the last few years.
2008 Show Dates: May 3rd. Fun Show - June 7th. Payback Show - July 5th. Payback Show - Sept. 6th.
Payback Show – all shows start at 11 am. (There is no show scheduled for August due to lack of participation
and loss of funds to the club.) Mark your calendars and come show your horses, mini horses, ponies & mules at
Heartland Saddle Club’s new location! A show bill (without rules & sponsors) is included in this newsletter.

There were 127 members and guests attending the party! We want to thank everyone who donated and
everyone who bid on the silent auction items! They were all great! Also, thank you to Kristine Piiparinen’s
“Mom” who made and donated the delicious cake! Heartland Saddle Club is run by officers & volunteers who
not only donate their time, but all other “essentials” that keeps the club going. THANK YOU TO ALL! Let’s
all strive to make the next ten years for Heartland Saddle Club even more successful than the first ten were!

Cross your fingers but don’t hold your breath…….we sure hope the weather will be good for our trail
ride at Sand Ridge State Forest near Forest City, IL. The ride starts at 1 pm. and we will meet in the Mockernut
Meadow day parking lot. However, the last time some HSC riders were there the parking lot was muddy.
Unless conditions have changed, if you have a four-wheel drive truck be prepared to use it. If not, you may
want to unload your horse(s) at the entrance before parking your rig. Remember to call an officer early on
the morning of the ride to make sure it has not been cancelled due to bad weather. (Imagine that?)

Vendors with everything any equestrian could want including over 100 trailers, breed/sport demos, stallion
row, horses for sale, demonstrations and riding clinics by some of the nations leading clinicians, and anything
else “horsey” you could ever want will be offered at the 20th annual 2008 Illinois Horse Fair. Horse Fair opens
on Friday with a reduced $5 admission fee - Sat. & Sun. tickets are $12 adults and $6 child/senior; weekend
passes are $20 adults and $10 child/senior. Plan on going…and you’ll probably see lots of people you know!

NATIONAL ANIMAL IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM (NAIS) – (A tracking system for disease outbreaks.)
The Illinois Department of Agriculture announced that a premises identification number will be required to
exhibit livestock at state, county, 4-H and FFA fairs beginning in 2008. Registration is fee and can be done
online at www.agr.state.il.us/premiseid (You will receive your ID number immediately.) or you can call: 1-866-
299-9256 for an application to be sent in the mail. (Applications done by mail may take four weeks to process.)
Because the identification number corresponds to the location where an animal is raised (kept), it does not
necessarily have to be issued in the exhibitor’s name. The number must be obtained and included on entry
forms, however, before fairs will allow an animal to compete. (Thanks to Melanie Floyd for this information.)
For more information on NAIS: Cass-Morgan Farm Bureau is hosting an open forum/informational meeting
with IDOA Director Chuck Hartke on Tuesday, Mar. 2, 2008 at Hamilton’s, 110 East St. Jacksonville, IL.
beginning at 7 pm. (Thanks to Cynde Kinner for this information.)
Owners of out-of-state horses must obtain a premises ID number through their state’s agriculture dept.
whose contact information can be found online at http://animalid.aphis.usda.gov/nais/premisesid/register.shtml

HSC sponsors 10 point trails rides scheduled from Feb. through Nov. in 2008. If more than one adult rider
completes all the rides resulting in a tie, the names will be put in a “hat” and the winner will be drawn out at the
2009 Holiday Party where all awards are given out. Come join us at the shows & trail rides & be a winner!

If you don’t need it any more, bring it to be sold at our HSC’s “White Elephant Sale” starting after a short
business meeting at 7 pm. in the basement of the 1st National Bank in Arenzville. Horse items, knick-knacks,
crafts & especially baked goodies are welcome! Any and all items donated will be greatly appreciated as this is
a fund raiser for our club! Warning: Bidding can become intense among close family members! So, bring
some extra cash & your checkbook and plan on having a “hilarious” time bidding on those “special” items!

HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY! May the luck of the Irish be with you & yours!
O’Jacksonville St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held on Saturday, March 15th at 11 am. Check in time is at

sale on Saturday, March 29th starting at 8:30 am. in the Livestock Arena at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in
Springfield, IL. This is a beautiful buggy that is in excellent condition. If you would like to buy this buggy
before it goes to the MVMHC sale, it can be seen at Don & Connie Nordsiek’s home. Call: 217-997-2150

Riders had such a good time at last years’ scavenger hunt, we decided to try it again at Sand Ridge State
Forest near Forest City, IL. starting at 1 pm. on Sunday, March 30. There will be approximately 30 “picture
paper” items attached with clothes pins distributed along the trail. You will have to remember as many items as
you can and write them down when you get back to the parking area. (Paper & pencils will be available.) The
person(s) who remembers the most items will win prizes that will once again be donated by Illini Feed Supply
in Concord, IL. (They have feed for all your animals.) THANK YOU VERY MUCH ILLINI FEED
SUPPLY! We will meet at Mockernut Day Parking Lot and we need volunteers to ride out ahead to “hide” the
items to be found. If you wish to volunteer please call: Connie 217-997-2150 or Alicia 217-323-1336
Last year some riders shared their memories & the prizes! (And no, you can’t write them down as you go, Kay!)

“Little Johnny Joke” Little Johnny attended a horse auction with his father. He watched as his father moved
from horse to horse, running his hands up and down the horse’s legs and rump and chest. After a few minutes,
Johnny asked, “Dad, why are you doing that?” His father replied, “Because when I’m buying horses, I have to
make sure that they are healthy and in good shape before I buy.” Johnny, looking worried, said, “Dad, I think
the UPS guy wants to buy Mom.”

If You Grew Up In The Midwest, Then:
You know that “combine” is a noun.
You let your older siblings talk you into putting your tongue on a steel post in the middle of winter.
You know that “creek” rhymes with “pick”.
Football schedules, hunting season and harvest are all taken into consideration before wedding dates are
One day my Mother was out and my Dad was in charge of me. I was maybe 2 ½ years old and had just
recovered from an accident. Someone had given me a little “tea set” as a get well gift and it was one of my
favorite toys.
Daddy was in the living room engrossed in the evening news when I brought him a little cup of “tea”, which
was just water. After several cups of tea and lots of praise for such yummy tea, my Mom came home.
My Dad made her wait in the living room to watch me bring him a cup of tea, because it was “just the cutest
My Mom waited, and sure enough, here I come down the hall with a cup of tea for Daddy and she watches
him drink it up.
Then she says, “Did it ever occur to you that the only place that baby can reach to get water is the toilet?”

Just Some Thoughts:
Never be afraid to try something new. Remember that a lone amateur built the Ark. A large group of
professionals built the Titanic.
Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.
Joke: A policeman pulled a blonde over for speeding. When he asked to see her drivers license she said, “I
wish you guys would make up your minds! First, one of you takes my drivers license for speeding and then the
next day when I’m speeding, one of you asks for it back!”
