and other ways of keeping costs down

This guide is for people living on a low income. It was originally prepared following a Ruah
Mental Health Pathways to Opportunities Project in which participants and workers from
Ruah programs were consulted. It has since been modified and expanded.

This guide includes information about useful concessions and other ways of getting by on
a low income that people are already tapping into, information which people requested to
be included, and information about new services and programs. A big THANK YOU to
everyone who contributed.

This guide is intended to benefit people living on a low income and, as such, users are
welcome to copy and distribute the information it contains. This guide, and other useful

Perspectives on children, families and mental health is a resource unit working to support the
capacity of the health and human services sectors in Western Australia to work together to
improve outcomes for children and families where a parent experiences a mental illness.

Perspectives arises from the work of the WA Children of Parent with Mental Illness (COPMI)
Project. This work was initiated by the then Office of Mental Health in the commissioning of the
Pathways to Resilience report (Office of Mental Health 2002) which describes the vulnerabilities
of this group of children and their families and the systemic and clinical issues that impede
 service delivery and good outcomes.

The name Perspectives on children families and mental health is a very deliberate choice. It
recognises that all services, sectors, professional and consumer and carer points of view are
important if we are to further our understanding and ability to respond to children and families
 and the recovery journey.

                              WELLNESS RECOVERY ACTION PLAN (WRAP)
This innovative 8 week course (2.5 hours per week) is designed by consumers and led by consumers for
consumers. It is highly participatory and conversational and draws heavily on the resources of the group - a
cooperative effort. It is an educational course, not therapy. The WRAP facilitators are mental health consumers with
experience as facilitators and educators. Skills and strategies for achieving and maintaining well being are discussed and
                                                    individually planned.
Key concepts underlying the course content are Hope (recovery is possible), Personal Responsibility (I can do it),
Education (I can learn how), Self-advocacy (I can stick up for myself) and Strong Support System (I don’t have to
                                                         do it alone).
