Owl Facts Owls are predators. Most of the larger owls feed on small mammals, birds, and reptiles. An owl has three sets of eyelids. Owls can not move their eyeballs. An owl can turn its face upside down. An owl can swing its head around and look behind its back. Owls usually swallow their food whole. If an animal is too large to swallow whole, the owl may tear it into large chunks. The owl does not digest hair, bones, teeth, or feathers of its prey. The owl's digestive system presses these parts together to form a pellet. The owl spits out the pellet. By taking apart the pellet, you can tell what and how much the owl has eaten. What we can learn: Scientists learn many things about owls and where they live by examining their pellets.
