• Digestive condition that occurs with the
  consumption of foods containing gluten
• Gluten
   – Type of protein found in foods like bread,
     crackers, pasta etc.
   – Comes from grains like wheat, barley and rye
• Immune system attacks gluten  harms small
  intestine
•Villi on the small intestine are disrupted
due to gluten
• Unknown cause

• Having certain genes can increase risk
  – Family members are likely to pass down gene


• Doctors know something happens in the body
  that triggers the immune system to overreact
  to gluten

• Blood tests in search of certain antibodies

• Endoscopy test
  – tube that bends to look inside small intestine
  – Biopsy can be done
     • Removal of small staples of tissue to be lab tested


• After diagnosis, further tests will be
  preformed to look for anemia or osteoporosis
              NO DRUGS, NO CURE
• Immediate Treatment
    – Stop consumption of gluten
    – Adopt a strict gluten-free diet
    – Avoid drinking milk and milk
      based products for intestine to
      heal

• Strict Gluten-Free diet
    – Avoid wheat, rye, barley, and
      oats
    – No drinking beer
    – Eat meals with rice, corn,
      buckwheat, and millet
• Untreated can be life
  threatening!
  – Lead to osteoporosis, tooth enamel
    defects, nervous system disease,
    organ disorders, pancreatic disease,
    and gynecological disorders
  – Links to certain types of caner,
    intestinal lymphoma
