Variability and Change
What you can do after
seeing this presentation:
• Describe how elements of a pattern
are related
• Describe and predict changes
Pattern Relationships
• The numbers or objects in a pattern
can change in predictable ways. They
can:
– Grow
– Shrink
– Repeat
Growing Patterns
• To grow is to increase or expand
• Patterns can be described as growing
• Examples:
– The shape of a plant can grow as the plant
matures
– Numbers can increase
– Designs can expand

Shrinking Patterns
• To shrink is to become smaller or more compacted or to
lessen in value.
• Patterns can be described as shrinking
• Examples:
– The height of a snow bank shrinks as spring
approaches
– Numbers in a pattern can lessen in value
– Designs and objects can become compacted or
smaller

Repeating Patterns
• To repeat is to make appear again
• Patterns can be described as repeating
• Examples:
– Numbers can repeat
– Objects and designs can repeat
– The seasons of the year repeat from one year to
the next

Take a deeper look into repeating patterns.
Shrinking Patterns
• To shrink is to become smaller or more compacted or to
lessen in value.
• Patterns can be described as shrinking

Growing, Shrinking, AND
Repeating
• Sometimes a pattern does a combination.
• Examples:
– Grow and shrink
– Grow and repeat
– Shrink and repeat
– Shrink, grow, and repeat

Can you complete the pattern?
Let’s Be Mathematicians
• A pattern is a set of numbers or objects that are
generated by following a specific rule.
• A sequence is a pattern involving an ordered
arrangement of numbers, geometric figures,
letters, or other objects.
• If you need more help with these terms or if you
would like to see more examples using these
terms, check out the dictionary at Intermath.
