                                                    Congratulations to John Seymour of
Waverley Terrace, Lynton, who gave his
100th blood donation at the Parish Hall in
                                                    Braunton on Thursday 17th February.

John started donating blood when he was 19
at Lynton Town Hall where many of his twice
yearly donations were given but has also
                                                    donated elsewhere throughout North Devon.
John was inspired by his father who himself
                                                    donated over 50 units.

In the days when John began giving blood the
National Blood Service sent a team from
Bristol twice a year to Barnstaple, from there a
unit was sent to some of the smaller North
Devon towns which made regular donating
much easier. These days, giving blood is
more of a challenge as local people now have
to make a 40 mile round trip to Barnstaple,
                                                    Braunton or Ilfracombe.

The Lynton Blood Donor Sessions have been held in various venues over the years including the
Town Hall, United Reformed Church and Lee Abbey. For many years when sessions were held
at Lynton Town Hall donations usually exceeded 100 but the final session at Lee Abbey last year
saw only 61 donations which was lower than the number required, and the unit was withdrawn.

A change which took place several years ago was that donors could give blood three times a
year and because John is fit and healthy he has been able to do this. He attributes his good
health to keeping fit and active and has taken part and finished 26 out of the 27 strenuous annual
Doone Runs, many to help raise money for worthwhile causes.

For dedicated donors such as John who is in the 1% of donors who reach 100 units, it is an
amazing achievement.

Well done John.

Dear Advertiser Readers

I am hoping that you can spare me a few minutes of your time.

The Hospice at Deer Park is an amazing place for not only the ill, but their families
and loved ones as well. They can all feel safe, loved and extremely comforted in a
very distressing situation but the Hospice is more than that. It is a place of friendship,
laughter and believe it or not, happiness. We are extremely lucky to have such a
place on our doorstep. We may know or have lost someone dear to us from cancer
but knowing that there is somewhere like the North Devon Hospice to go to helps
ease everyone’s pain.

At this time we are seeking donations to help fund a Two Day Marathon of Big
Breakfasts which by kind donation is being held at The Greenhouse Restaurant on
Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th March between 8am and 4pm, menu in next month’s
edition. We would really appreciate any donation you feel you would like to make
in the way of food or money. We are only small but with great big hearts working
for something we truly believe in. Every penny taken for breakfasts and raffle will go
to the Hospice so please come and join us and thank you for your time.

Yours truly

Cathy Richards
