SHAPE MEMORY ALLOY
A shape memory alloy (SMA, smart metal, memory metal,
memory alloy, muscle wire, smart alloy) is an alloy that
"remembers" its original, cold, forged shape, and which
returns to that shape after being deformed, sometimes by
applying heat. Shape memory alloys have applications in
industries including medical and aerospace.

There are still some difficulties with shape memory alloys
that must be overcome before they can live up to their full
potential. These alloys are still relatively expensive to
manufacture and machine compared to other materials
such as steel and aluminium. Most SMA's have poor
fatigue properties; this means that while under the same
loading conditions (i.e. twisting, bending, compressing) a
steel component may survive for more than one hundred Shade opens with heat of

Thermochromic sheet is the trapping of
thermochromic pigment in a sheet. By
varying the pigments it s possible to make
the sheet react to specific temperatures,
such as with the fridge thermometer.

degrees C becomes soft and

quickly either with hot water or
