If you have ever suffered from nasal congestion you know how painful and irritating this condition
can be.

This is the blockage of the nasal passages which is usually caused by the inflammation of the
blood vessels within the nose. I have suffered with this problem on and off for a number of years.

There are many remedies available, some are surgical and some are medical. Although surgical
intervention is required on occasions there are alternatives available to treat nasal congestion at
home and I have listed a few "tried and tested" ones for you to consider. I have also mentioned a
few items that irritated my condition.

Menthol Inhalation

This is an excellent quick method to clear your sinuses and I have used this on many occasions.
Place boiling water and menthol in a bowl, place a towel over your head and inhale the menthol
fumes. You must be careful not to burn yourself but if you can carry this out twice a day you will
notice a marked difference in your symptoms.

Nasal Decongestants

There are many nasal decongestants on the market but my advice would be to seek medical
advice before purchasing one as nasal congestion can be caused by a variety of reasons - allergy,
deviated nasal septum or inflamed inferior turbinates. You should always try and take a
decongestant that is suitable for you. Decongestants work by reducing swelling in the nasal
membranes, stuffiness and the pressure within your sinuses that causes the pain.


These are usually effective if your congestion is caused by allergies. These work by controlling the
histamines. Histamines are triggered by the allergen and this in turn causes your stuffy nose, head
and sinus pain. Please be aware that antihistamines can sometimes cause drowsiness.

Spring Clean Your House

Your nasal congestion could be caused by house allergies and a thorough cleaning programme is
recommended, especially if you have pets which could also be causing your nasal congestion.
Your carpets, if possible, should be replaced by wooden or tiled floors. If not carpets should be
hovered thoroughly with a high quality hoover.
Be Careful What You Eat And Drink

There are certain foods which are proven to aggravate the symptoms. One of the main offenders
is dairy products. These are known to increase the production of nasal mucous so you should try
and avoid milk, and aged cheeses. There are also certain sugars and carbohydrates which should
but cut down such as sugars and grains. Alcohol will also aggravate nasal congestion so If you
can cut that down to a bare minimum it will help.

When my nasal congestion was particularly painful I stopped drinking completely and cut out dairy
produce. It really did help. It is a good idea to keep a diary of the foods/drinks you have stopped
having to see which one perhaps was aggravating your symptoms. It is a process of elimination.
