Langston Hughes (1902-1967)
Prairie View A&M Concert Chorale Langston Hughes, American poet, playwright, novelist, and editor, is best known for his
verses about the black experience in America. However, his writing was not limited to this subject. In
Time of Silver Rain is a memorable poem which celebrates the joy of springtime, and is from a collec-
tion of poems he compiled shortly before his death.

William Blake (1757-1827)
William Blake, an English poet, painter, and engraver, is now regarded as one of the earliest
and greatest figures of Romanticism. He is best known for his hand-illustrated series of lyrical and epic
poems, the most famous of these being Songs of Innocence (1789) and Songs of Experience (1794).
Blake lived in poverty, was largely ignored and considered to be insane. He died a poor and neglected
man.
In these two collections, it was Blake’s desire to show “the two contrary states of the human

soul”. Songs of Innocence represents the child-like feelings of life, symbolized by the Lamb. The corre-
sponding symbol in Songs of Experience is the Tiger, which represents energy, strength, cruelty and an
a realistic view of life. It is interesting to note that Blake originally spelled the word “tiger” with a “Y”
instead of an “I”, perhaps to suggest a visual expression of a trigger or a coiled spring, pertinent to the
tense and awful Tiger.

Einojuhani Rautavaara (b. 1973), a Finn-
ish composer of contemporary classical music,
studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and
at The Juilliard School in New York City. He has
served as a music teacher, archivist and profes-
sor of composition. A prolific composer who
has written in a variety of styles, his more recent
works often have a mystical element. Federico
Garcia Lorch (1898-1936) was a Spanish poet,
dramatist and theatre director. He was abducted
and murdered by persons believed to be affiliated
with the Nationalist cause at the beginning of the
Spanish Civil War. Today Garcia Lorca is hon-
ored by a statue prominently located in Madrid’s
Plaza de Santa Ana.

Cordoba. Distant and lonely. Some lost and lonely wanderer
Whose violin laments
The scream Who wanders through the reedbeds
The ellipse of the scream, Long, motherless, forlorn
From mountain to mountain.
From the olive grove, Your slate grey waves I’ve often watched
Over the blue night With eyes that fill with tears
it will be a black rainbow. My youth’s first sorrows
I have cried upon your lovely shore.
Ay!
Your image is printed deep in me
Like the bow of a viola I long for there once more
The scream has set humming On many nights I’ve listened
The long strings of the wind For the wild duck’s call again.
Ay! Ai, nama mamina
Roasting a duck and happily humming a kaladu
The people of the caves, Roasting a duck and Christmas is coming.
With lamps, open their doors Mixing punch with a generous measure
And peer. Mixing punch with a cup full of pleasure.
Ay! Chopping a tree when the woods are dimming
Propping it up and happily trimming

“The Moon appears” Kids want to look and the puppy’s yapping.
At the rise of the moon Sitting around with a log on the fire
Bells fade out Singing along with the family choir
And impassable paths appear. Bright are the lights and bright is the season
