PHYSICS: Egg Drop Contest! 1. The egg drop contest will be held during class on December 3/6. You will have a little bit of time to work on this in class, but ultimately you will need to be creative to come up with a working design that you can construct in a relatively short time frame. 2. All participants will design their carriers within the following specifications: Materials: The carrier will be made of any combination of no more than FOUR of the following: 25 soda straws (plastic) 10 rubber bands 9 pipe cleaners 2 meters of yarn 18 cotton puff balls as many toothpicks as you want to use Nothing else! Other materials will result in disqualification (and no credit). In addition to the above, you can use as much glue as you need to use, as long as you do not coat your egg with glue or glue materials to the egg such that more than 1/3 of the egg's surface is covered. 3. The first round will consist of a drop of about 2 meters. Any surviving egg (un- cracked) will then be dropped from a greater height (about 8 meters). Height will keep increasing until there is only one surviving egg carrier per class. 4. What I need to see: a) a to-scale sketch of your design, including a list of materials, due in class on November 29/30, and then turned in with your final report. (15 points) b) a written description of the physics involved in designing your egg carrier, and a "rough sketch" diagram of your design that visually connects the written description with a visual description. What do you need to understand in order to build an effective egg transporter, and how did you incorporate this understanding into your design?(20 points) c) a critical written evaluation of your carrier's performance-- what round did your egg survive to? Did your carrier work the way that you designed it to work? How did it fail? What would you do differently next time? (20 points) d) you competing in the event (15 points) YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR OBTAINING YOUR OWN MATERIALS!!! I'LL BRING THE EGGS, SO YOU WILL NEED TO DESIGN YOUR CARRIER SO THAT AN EGG CAN BE PLACED IN IT ON THE DAY OF THE CONTEST!!!
