NEWSLETTER no. 28,
Message from the President
Isn’t it nice to see the slightly longer days, but goodness it’s cold! We’ve been in Spain for 8 years,
and we moved up here from Murcia 4 years ago. I have never known it so cold before, although of
course at least we don’t have the snow to worry about. My poor little car’s computer screen tells me
to “beware of possible ice on the road”, as the outside temperature is only 2 degrees in the
mornings if I leave home before the sun has reached us!
The renewals meeting in La Senieta went very well, although not quite as well as we had planned.
Originally the very large room we have used in the past was booked, and we all duly got ready
mentally to arrive early so we could open the huge dividing screens between the two rooms. Sadly
this wasn’t necessary as the meeting rooms had all been double booked, and we were left with the
smallest one! I’m sorry if those of you who came felt a bit like sardines, but imagine how we felt
behind the desks, I’m sorry too that I had to ask you to try and keep quiet, but the folks in the
library were complaining about the noise! It was quite loud, and we are always anxious to avoid any
confrontation with the people in La Senieta, as one year the Police were about to be called by the
librarian, because we were making so much noise!
I’m still amazed that we had 80 people join us as new members that day.
Please remember that you can’t join or attend a Group, or go on any trips unless you
are a fully paid up Member.Group Leaders will be checking Membership Cards.
Looking at my diary I see that I have been to lots of meetings about all sorts of things in the last few
weeks, but the thing I’m most pleased with doing this month dates back to last May! We had our
“Fun Day Friday”, and made over €700, which we pledged to the HELP of Denia organization.
About three weeks ago their President said they would very much like a riser /recliner chair for
their Drop In Centre in La Xara. I went on to the Internet to try and find one, but although there
were lots and lots of them, they all seemed to start about €1200, and then another €100 for
delivery, so well out of our price range. I contacted a Company called Easyhire of Benidorm, and
told them what we needed. I asked if they knew of anyone in our area who could help us. The owner
of the Company (Jaimey) immediately offered to buy in especially for us, and sell to us at cost, a
leather chair, and arrange delivery to the HELP Centre for €800! The payment was made at once,
and the chair was delivered on the day we agreed on, and not only was Jaimey on time, he also
repaired a chair at the centre as well. A lovely chap, and a pleasure to do business with. The
President of HELP in this area is Pat Lee Patton, and she has sent us a lovely letter, thanking us for
our help, no pun intended, and then she invited the Fun Day Committee to a coffee morning at the
Centre on Monday 31st for the “official presentation”, complete with our friend Nikki Luxford! The
weather was atrocious, and because of other commitments, only three of us from the “Fun Day
Committee” could make it, but we were made very welcome indeed. The chair is very handsome,
and was ably demonstrated for us by a regular HELP visitor, Michael. A slightly sad follow up to
the visit was that when I got back to my lovely little car, there was a deep and long scratch along the
side of it, oh well, at least it wasn’t my fault!
I have also had word of a Charity abseil organised by the Lady Elizabeth School Leos club. There
will be 20 Leo club members, plus their headmaster Richard Wijeratne, and 15 adults doing a 300-
metre descent in Lliber on February 12th – which is a Saturday – it starts at 10.00. To find the site,
you pass through Lliber towards Jalon turn right just before the blue bridge at the far end of the
village – it will be signposted too.
The motto of the Leo’s – which is the junior version of the Lions – is “Children Helping Children”
and they certainly do that in the Lady Elizabeth School, as you will see from the project.
The day aims to raise money to support local children's cancer charity Aspanion, and the Leo's are
specifically raising funds to send children suffering from cancer, mainly leukaemia, on summer
U3A member and Senior Citizen Mary Smith is doing the abseil, and she has already received a
number of generous donations towards the summer trips for children. Mary will gladly take any
donations from members AFTER the U3A meeting on 7th February.
Also included in the adults is Lady Elizabeth School “old girl”, friend of the U3A, and Costa Blanca
News reporter Nikki Luxford, that girl gets everywhere!
The current aim is to raise 5,000 euros which will see a number of children enjoy the summer trip,
BUT the more generous people are and the more money raised means more children can go. I don’t
know about you, but I feel somehow that it seems doubly unfair when children get cancer, although
of course it’s a horrible disease for anyone.
I shall be there, and I will be lost in admiration as people come down on the ropes. I have
absolutely no head for heights at all, and the bottom step of my kitchen step ladder is as far as I go!
It would be lovely to see some of you there to support Mary and Nikki, and the other intrepid folks
We will be having a speaker at the February meeting, it’s Eric Olversen, who like Mary Smith is of
course another “one of our own”, and he will tell us of his epic adventures cycling around Africa, it
was last May, but I’m sure it still seems like just yesterday to Eric!
Hope to see you at the next meeting.

On the journey to Toledo we will visit Chinchon with its famous Castilian style Plaza Major which is
one of the best preserved in Spain. Enjoy a nice stroll in the maze of cobbled streets that lead up to the
church of Piety, where you can admire one of Goya's works, "The assumption of the Virgin", which he
painted in 1812. Just next to it is the splendid Lope de Vega theatre, built in the 19th century: it is
sometimes used as a cinema. A little further on you will come across the Clock Tower that overlooks
the village. Surrounded by relics; the esplanade and its three monuments overlook Plaza Mayor and
afford a stunning view of Chinchón, its castle and its countryside.
Nestled in a meander of the Tagus, Toledo is the capital of Castile-La Mancha. It is an ancient Roman
colony that became the centre of the Visigoth kingdom and a residence for the Arabs, Jews and
Christians of the Middle Ages. This explains the presence of numerous historical and religious
monuments, starting off with its Gothic cathedral. A beautiful altarpiece, displaying episodes of the
Christ's life, decorates the main altar. The sacristy contains paintings by El Greco, Titian, Van Dyck
and Goya. For El Greco fans, don't miss the "The Burial of Count Orgaz" in the church of Santo-Tomé.
In Toledo we will be staying in a 3* Hotel in the middle of the city, opposite the Alcazar. As usual the
accommodation will include breakfast and evening meal. Also included on the first morning in
Toledo, a walking tour of the historical city where the Arabic, Jewish and Christian cultures converge.
The trip will also include an excursion to Guadalupe and in particular to the Monastery de San
Jeronimo with its Mudejar cloister, Altar, Parchments and Museum.
The village of Guadalupe developed itself around its Gothic and Mudejar style monastery. Inside,
Santa Maria de Guadalupe, with its blackened face due to the candle smoke, attracts pilgrims from all
over the world. Here you will also discover a sacristy that encloses eight paintings by Zurbaran, the
Embroidery Museum and the Museum of Painting and Sculpture. The ancient hospital has become a
Parador luxury hotel.
On the last day on our return to the Costa Blanca we will visit a typical La Mancha town with its
windmills and castle.
The cost per person will be about 250 euros depending on the number of people taking part. Single
room supplement: 60 euros. To secure a place, you need to pay a deposit of 60 euros per person
