REALTOR® Disaster Relief Efforts
The REALTOR® organization is in the process of mobilizing after Katrina
smashed through the Gulf states. If you want to make a contribution, we will
have information shortly on what to do. The Mississippi Association is setting up
a fund and will be accepting donations directly and Louisiana and Alabama will
probably do the same.
Our MLS vendor, Solid Earth, is located in Alabama and has many clients along
the Gulf Coast. Here is a report from Matt Fowler of Solid Earth:
“Hi everyone. I have called around to check on our clients in the region effected by
Hurricane Katrina and here is an update.
Jeff Newman, AE of the Mobile Association reported that the wind was much worse
than Ivan, that they have many trees down but no flooding at the office or his
home. The news is reporting extensive flooding and severe damage downtown
however and Jeff tells us that power is likely to be out for up to two weeks.
I have not been able to reach Baton Rouge, I am getting an ‘all are circuits busy’
message so Ken or Herb if you are online, please let us know how you are. I have
also not been able to reach Navarre Beach yet but they are near Pensacola who gave
us an ‘all clear’ so they are likely OK.
The other associations: Lafayette, Pensacola, Emerald Coast (Ft. Walton/Destin), and
Panama City all reported heavy rain but no real damage.
Also, we have heard that Mary Jane Bauer, the AE in Lafayette, LA, has a son living
in New Orleans whose home was apparently destroyed. He and his family are with
her and are OK. There are other staff members and of course many Realtors in the
area whose family and friends have been effected and our thoughts and prayers are
with them all.
By the way, the MLS servers are all in Huntsville so they have not been effected at
all. Huntsville has approximately 10,000 people with no power but it was really no
more than a large thunderstorm when it came through last night. Neither our offices
or the hosting centers were effected.”

An RPAC Message from Arleen and Matt-
As summer is drawing to a close, we realize that we are coming down to “crunch
time” on this year’s RPAC Campaign. The slogan for this year’s state campaign
is 5-0 in 0-5, meaning 50% Participation in 2005…The VAR goal of 50%
participation statewide, may seem like a lofty goal, since as of the middle of
August, they are at 26%. On a local level here at CAAR, we are proud to say
that we are at 56% participation of our membership (Membership count as of the
end of 2004)! We want to thank you for your contributions to date, and in
particular want to recognize 3 members who have donated in excess of $1,000
each—our Sterling R givers, Pat Jensen, Percy Montague and Drake Van de
While it may seem that we “have made it”, we also recognize that our association
has not been one to settle for mediocrity in the past. We still have 2 more
months to make this the BEST RPAC CAMPAIGN in the history of our
association, and to show fellow state associations that we are true leaders in the
state of Virginia. Out of 9 associations with member count of 501-2,000, we are
currently right smack in the middle in comparing our level of participation with
that of the other 8. Four associations, Blue Ridge, Fredericksburg, Greater
Piedmont, and Southside Virginia, all have a greater percentage of participation
than CAAR! Many of you made donations with your annual dues back in
December. However, if you are not sure, just pick up the phone and call one of
us or Laura at CAAR, and we’ll be happy to let you know! Better yet, just bring a
check to Thursday’s General Membership Meeting, or send your donation to
CAAR using the on-line Donation Card. Keep in mind that your donation of $99
or more will make you an official member of the 99 Club and you will be
recognized with an RPAC pin at an upcoming meeting!
Now, back by popular demand….Read what some of your fellow CAAR Members
have to say about RPAC….
RPAC in the Spotlight
"As a REALTOR®, I strive for excellence and professionalism in my work, and in
keeping with this effort at the local level, I donate to RPAC to ensure that our
industry leaders have the flexibility and strength to fight for an industry framework
that promotes and protects the same."
The Chase Team at Roy Wheeler Realty Co.
“I donated to RPAC because I see the need for an active voice for REALTORS®
and the real estate profession on Capitol Hill. I think issues like group health care
and access to MLS are of vital interest to us and our careers. I know we
sometimes think of ourselves as "out there" alone and working our businesses,
but if we combine the power of over a million members, we can have powerful
and positive input in the legislative process. “
Susan Veach, REALTOR®
RE/MAX Assured Properties
“Real estate is my profession and source of income. The legislation that may or
may not impact it is important to me. I do not have the time or expertise to stay
on top of legislative issues to a level warranted by the level of importance it
represents to the real estate industry. RPAC is the solution. I donate money so
the people working for me as REALTOR® can have the resources they need to
protect the interests of REALTORS® and property owners.”
