OTHER SIGNIFICANT PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY

A regional tournament of the middle school level (Division B) of the Science Olympiad
was held at GSU on Saturday, Feb. 19. The Department of Physics and Astronomy ran 7
of the 23 events this year: Solar System, Shock Value, Battery Buggy, Optics – Out of
Sight, Junkyard Challenge, Towers, and Storm the Castle. Five of the events were
coordinated by faculty members (J. Wilson, S. Doluweera, M. Dhamala, G. Hastings, N.
Dietz, V. Apalkov, and R. Mani) with the assistance of 17 graduate. In addition, two
events we run by the GSU chapter of the Society of Physics Students with 8
undergraduate physics majors involved. C. Butler was the official keeper of the scores
and yielded her office to serve as tournament headquarters (as she has for a number of
years). C. Hopper assisted in the construction of apparatus for the Optics event and
supplied support for the Bottle Rocket event. J. Evans and B. Thoms were assistant
tournament directors and assisted in a number of aspects of planning and .
