concerning scholarships, HOPE grant, and access to college applications and much more!!! Please

o Please remind Seniors to turn in their BRAG sheets if they are planning on applying for
o Seniors planning on applying to several colleges or scholarships – need to make a BRAG sheet and
bring to Mrs. Passmore for her use in recommendations!!! This is very important and a way for
her to write “glowing” recommendations for you! Make copies of this for the teachers that you
will also be asking to write recommendations – this is a big help to them as well!
o Georgia Cooperative Health Education Program, Inc. is pleased to announce their scholarship
opportunity for any West Laurens High School senior that plans to major in a health-related field.
This student must already be accepted into an accredited college. Applications are available in
the counselors’ office and are due by March 11, 2010.
o Laurens-Dublin Retired Educators Association announces their scholarship opportunity for
students who plan to pursue a degree in education. Applications are available in the counselors’
office and are due by March 15, 2010.
o The Wade Walker Athletic Scholarship Committee will award a $1000.00 scholarship to a
graduating senior from all four local high schools for outstanding athletic achievement.
Requirements are as follows: Have a minimum of a 3.0 Academic Average; Have proof of
registration to an accredited college or application; Be active in school, church, community, and
volunteer work; Have lettered in at least 1 varsity sport; Applicant cannot have been awarded or
receiving a full scholarship from any other source or combined sources. Applications are
available in the counselors’ office and are due back to the counselor by March 22, 2010.
o Pilot Club of Dublin 2010 Youth Volunteer Scholarship will award a $1000 scholarship to a senior
for outstanding volunteer service given to their community.
*Be a graduating senior

*Attach a 1 page essay on your volunteer experience

o The Atlanta Braves High School Scholarship Program-Six $2000 scholarships will be awarded to
students who have demonstrated strong community service involvement as well as solid academic
performance during their high school careers. All scholarship recipients will be honored during a
special on-field presentation prior to the Atlanta Braves home game on May 1, 2010. Completed
applications must be postmarked by March 31, 2010. Applications are available in the counselor’s
o The Julian & Jan Hester Memorial Scholarship Fund is to assist deserving high school seniors in
their first year of college and to promote community banking. Applications are available in the
counselors’ office and are due by April 2nd to a local community bank.
o Laurens County Farm Bureau announces a scholarship opportunity for students whose family has
been a Laurens County Farm Bureau Member one year prior to the April 15th deadline.
Applicants must be a high school senior with a 3.0 grade point average and qualified to enter
college in the fall term of the current year. Only one application per family per year may be
submitted. Applications are available in the counselors’ office and due by April 15th.
o BigSun Scholarship
The BigSun Organization is proud to be able to continue to help young athletes succeed in their
academic pursuits. We are offering an annual scholarship to a deserving student. All student
athletes are eligible for this award, regardless of which sport they are participating in.

The successful applicant will be a high school senior or be attending a post secondary institute and
currently involved in some sport at that institution or in the community..

o The G. Wayne Clough Georgia Tech Promise Scholarship makes it possible for students to earn
their college degree debt free at one of the nation’s top public educational institutions – Georgia
Tech! This program is designed to fill a gap in the financial aid support system, picking up where
the HOPE scholarship and other financial aid options leave off. Student eligibility requirements
and criteria include: legal resident of GA, eligible applicant for federal student financial aid, less
than $33,300 in total family income, and must submit a complete financial aid application each

o Columbus State University proudly announces their Servant Leadership Program. Each year a
limited number of full-time entering freshmen are competitively selected to receive stipends of
$1250 per semester, renewable for up to eight semesters. Entering freshmen must have a 3.0 high
school GPA to be eligible to participate. Spaces are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis.

o Seniors that are planning to attend Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah and wish to
pursue a career in science or mathematics have an opportunity to participate in a summer
research fellowship the summer prior to their freshmen year and the summer after their freshmen
year. Students selected will live on campus for 6 weeks from June 19 – July 31, 2010 free of
charge and will be paid a stipend of $300 each week. The program requirements are at least a 500
on the math portion of the SAT, a recommendation from a high school science or mathematics
teacher, an online application (found at www.cst.armstrong.edu/step) and an interview.

o The Dublin Junior League announces their 2010 Scholarship application for female students only.

o THE JOHN LAURENS CHAPTER, NSDAR, ANNOUNCES THE HARRIET JONES
CLAXTON, AND THE PAT MERCER SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
The John Laurens Chapter, NSDAR offers two $1,000.00 scholarships. This is a general academic
scholarship offered to students with any course of study.
The criteria is as follows:
High School Senior or College Student
GPA of 3.0 and above
Laurens County Resident
Involvement in community, civic, and school activities.

o Dublin South Central Area Chapter Albany State University Alumni Association announces
their scholarship opportunity. This scholarship is open to those individuals who are
planning on attending Albany State University.
Amount awarded: $1000.00

start your search for free money today. Remember, not every scholarship is based on academic
performance or financial need. There are hundreds of scholarships available that consider all
types of criteria: debate, art, music, sports, even baking!
o Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. announces their scholarship opportunity for 2010 male
graduates of an accredited high school. Scholarship recipient must have a 2.7 or better GPA
verified by a high school transcript; applicant must submit a typed essay; two letters of
recommendation; must be on a college preparatory curriculum. Applications are available in the
counselors’ office and are due to the counselor by April 12, 2010.
o The Oconee High School National Alumni Association is proud to announce their scholarship
opportunity. Applications are available in the counselors’ office and are due by April 15th.
o HUTCHESON Scholarship. It is a two hundred, fifty dollar check to a WLHS student. It can be
used for books, buy new clothes or simply gas money.
The following is the criteria.
* A student that plans to major in the fine arts or a student that has an interest in the fine arts.
(has taken upper level art, chorus or band courses.)
* A student that is in good standing with WLH
* A student that is a solid A/B student
* A well rounded student. (extra curricular activities)
* Need will be taken into consideration
* If the student plans to attend the following it would be a plus: The University of Georgia, Berry
College, Young Harris College, ABAC in Tifton, Ga. Asbury College in Wilmore Kentucky,
Shorter College, LaGrange College, Ga. College and State University and Georgia Southern

o The Alton Lee McCullough Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating senior from the
Laurens County School system who will enroll in a technical or industrial program at Heart of
Georgia Technical College. A completed application, copy of high school transcripts, and

o The brothers of Annis Chapel Lodge No. #644 announces their scholarship opportunity for
African-American graduating seniors. This student must be accepted into a college, university, or
technical college in the state of Georgia and have a 2.5 GPA. Applications are available in the

o A representative from Georgia Southwestern State University will be here on Tuesday, March 16th
during lunch to meet with interested students.
o Southern Polytechnic State University announces their Open House Date –April 17, 2010. Sign up
at www.spsu.edu/visit or call 800-635-3204 to make your reservations. They are excited to
announce their addition of new engineering majors in mechanical, electrical, and civil. Southern
Polytechnic has also broadened their degrees in Computer Game Design & Development, Political
Science, and Accounting.
o Georgia Southwestern announces their addition of the Geology and Dual-Degree Engineering
programs. The Geology program is only one of 6 programs in the state offering a B.S. degree in
Geology. The Dual-Degree Program is a collaborative program with Georgia Tech that allows
students to take two-to-three years of coursework at GSW and then apply for transfer into a
particular engineering program at GT.
o Auburn University is hosting their Engineering Day (E-Day) on Friday, February 26th. This is an
opportunity for students and parents to explore a wide range of engineering disciplines. If you

o Armstrong Atlantic State University announces their Pirate Preview Day. This is an opportunity
for students to participate in their Instant Admissions Process where students can bring an official
high school transcript, SAT or ACT scores, and the $25 application fee to be evaluated for
admission on the spot. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to receive an early admission

o The Medical College of Georgia announces their 2010 Pre-College Student Educational
Enrichment Program (SEEP), which will be held on the campus of the Medical College of Georgia
from Saturday, May 29 – Friday, July 16, 2010. Qualified students who are Georgia residents at
the rising senior and graduating senior levels are eligible for admission to the program. The
selection process is very competitive; the committee will select approximately 15 pre-college
students from throughout Georgia for the SEEP. Interested students should stop by and talk to
the counselors! Deadline to apply is March 1, 2010.
