A. OBJECTIVE

  1. 045: Identify suicide theories,
     communicative signals &
     characteristics associated with
     individuals who commit suicide
              SUICIDE


B. Suicidal Inmate - inmate who threatens
   to harm, attempts to harm, or exhibits
   behavior indicating potential for
   harming himself/herself may be
   considered potentially suicidal.
             SUICIDE


C. Theories of Suicide

  1. Suicide viewed as resolution to given
     situation
         a. See no other way out of the
            situation
         b. No other alternatives
            SUICIDE

2. Crisis intervention can help to bring
   alternatives into awareness

3. Suicide may be seen as an act of
   assertion, a declaration of
   independence
    a. Feel that he is at least competent
       enough to take his/her own life
          SUICIDE

4. Suicide attempt may be an indicator
   that the individual is used by his
   family as a scapegoat

      a. The family may vent their anger
         & resentment onto this individual

      b. Believes he is cause of conflict
       SUICIDE

  of manipulation

   Suicidal Risk

        f. Family history of suicide

E. Characteristics of a Suicidal Individual

   1. Isolation from significant others

   2. Feeling of helplessness about legal &
      family situation

   3. Restriction of physical activities
      SUICIDE



4. Confined space/crowded

5. Considerable idle time on hands

6. Threatening/frightening living
   conditions
      SUICIDE


7. Little control over life/frustration

8. Feelings of hopelessness

 9. Feelings of uselessness

10. Previous suicide attempts
            SUICIDE

F. Jail Environment

  1. Incarceration
  2. Feelings of helplessness concerning
     court & family situation
  3. Restriction of physical activities

G. Communicative Signals

  1. Direct Statements

       a. Statements expressing feelings of
          inadequacy, worthlessness and
          hopelessness. Any threat should
          be taken seriously.
           SUICIDE


2. Overt Behavior

  1. Gets pills, rope, poison or other means

  2. Writes a will- may give away personal
     possessions /dispose of property
          SUICIDE

3. Physical Symptoms

     a. Insomnia
     b. Anxious
     c. Weight Loss/Loss of Appetite
     d. Apathy/Indifference
     e. Withdrawal, Depression, Isolation
     f. Agitation
           SUICIDE

H. Preventive Methods Used to Reduce
   the Potential for Suicide Attempts

   1. Observe & get to know the inmates
      you are responsible for

   2. Be alert for changes in behavior &
      communicative signals
        SUICIDE


3. Notify medical department if inmate
   attempts to injure him/herself

4. Follow suicide prevention plan for
   inmates

5. Communicate with the inmate’s
   security/treatment staff
       SUICIDE


6. Inmates placed on suicide
   precaution/watch is to have nothing
   in his/her cell
