Dear GFYOs members, parents and guardians, 26th January 2012

I hope that you have settled into the new term well, and your child is enjoying all the new
music that we have started so far.

Fairthorne Manor – 26th February
There is information available to all those attending from your conductor. Make sure you
pick it up today, and fill in the reply form to choose your activity!

Avon Tyrrell 9-11 March
Thank you for the response so far. There are still some more spaces, so if you would like
to attend this fantastic trip, please fill in the application form ASAP! More information
will be given out after half term.

Music for Youth – 24th March
The Concert Band has been accepted to take part in the National Festival of Music for
Youth. The first stage of this will be on Saturday 24th March at Admiral Lord Nelson
School, Portsmouth, PO3 5XT. The band will perform in the morning session, and I have
put in a request that we are on first, which they have noted. Please could band members
arrive at the school no later than 9.40 so that we can be setup and ready to play at 10am.
Full attendance is crucial if we are to play at our best for this, and hopefully be invited to
perform in Birmingham later on in the year. Members of HCYBs have permission not to
attend their usual Saturday rehearsals on this date. Please complete the reply form for
Concert Band members to confirm your availability for this date.

29th March
This evening will consist of two events that everyone can get involved in. Firstly the
Young Strings and Wind Training Band will give a short end of term concert in the
Cort Theatre from 6pm – 6.45pm. This will be an opportunity to hear what each of the
groups have achieved over the last term, as well as some of material worked on and
performed at the Fairthorne Manor playday. We will be following this at 7.00 with our
annual Ben Barnard award evening. If you have been a member of any of our groups
from at least September 2011, then you will be eligible to enter one of the 6 categories: 1)
Strings and percussion up to and including grade 3, 2) Strings and percussion grade 4 and
5, 3) Wind section up to and including grade 3, 4) Wind section grade 4 and 5, 5) Main
award grade 6 and above on any instrument, 6) Ensemble. I am delighted that Martin
Garrod will be our guest adjudicator. Martin has worked for HMS for many years as a
brass teacher and conductor, and has performed with some of the country’s finest Brass
Bands. Application forms for this award will be made available on the website soon.

Monday 7th May
The Concert Band will be returning once again to the stunning Sir Harold Hillier Gardens,
Romsey, this time with the Romsey Area Concert Band. This is sure to be a very enjoyable
day out, and certainly one to bring lots of friends and relatives to. The two bands will each
be performing two sets between 11am and 3pm. Please fill in the reply form for Concert
Band members to confirm your availability for this date.

Sunday 17th June
All groups Summer Concert at Ferneham Hall, Fareham. Timings still TBA.

Friends Contributions
I am extremely grateful to the Friends of GFYO who are able to supplement the cost of
events such as Avon Tyrrell, purchase new instruments and equipment for the bands, and
continue to support the groups at concerts. It is through the donations made by members
at the beginning of each year to the Friends of GFYO that they are able to make these
things happen. Unfortunately this year the Friends have received less than half of what
they had in previous years. This could have an impact on their ability to supplement
residential trips, tours, and instrumental purchases in the future. If you have not yet made
a financial contribution this year, and would like to, then please fill in the attached form.

Thank you for you continued support for GFYOs; I look forward to seeing you at some of
our events coming up.

Yours sincerely

Jon Cranston

Dear GFYOs Wind Training and Young String members,

With not long to go before the Fairthorne Manor playday, I have some more information
for you to help plan for, and look forward to the day!

Fairthorne Manor is situated just outside Botley, and is easily accessible through the back
roads or the M27. You can use the postcode SO30 2GH to find Fairthorne Manor with
your SatNav, or directions from the M27:
1 Leave at Junction 7 and take the A334, signposted Botley.
2 Pass through several roundabouts until you reach Botley.
3 Drive through Botley village, at Botley Hill turn right onto the A3051,
Burridge Road, signposted Titchfield and YMCA National Centre.
4 YMCA Fairthorne Manor is just a minute’s drive on your right. (Yes, there are that
       many roundabouts!)

Once you have made it to Fairthorne Manor, make you way to the large Sports Hall
situated at the far side of the field, near the new residential blocks. This will be our base
for the day and our performance venue in the afternoon.

Timings of the day:
0900-0930 Arrival and setup at the Sports Hall
0930-1030 Full rehearsal in Sports Hall
1030-1115 Sectionals
(Wind Percussion and Brass in Sports Hall, Strings in Bluebell Room – see map)
1115-1245 Activity session*
1245-1345 Lunch (Dining Room)
1345-14.45 Full rehearsal in Sports Hall
1515 Concert in Sports Hall (16.15 depart)

You may choose one of the following for your activity session:

Crate Challenge
Groups divide into a number of roles to build a high tower of empty milk crates. You have
to stand on top of them while you build them. The course is designed to encourage and
improve team working skills and help individuals improve their balance and coordination.

PTO

 Web page www.hants.gov.uk/hms or www.gfyorchestras.hampshire.org
Jacobs Ladder
The activity consists of an 8 metre high giant ladder constructed from wire cables and
poles. Success on this challenge will depend on planning, teamwork, support and
motivation. Climb the ladder in teams of two, three or four. There's a twist in the tail
though: the rungs get further apart the higher you go!

Team Challenge
Venture into the forest and work as a team to navigate the assault course. Solve puzzles,
develop communications skills and practice strategy and tactics to succeed.

There is no need to bring concert uniform for the afternoon, however a warm sweater, and
maybe a change of clothes and footwear might be appropriate for during the activity.

Please don’t forget to bring your instrument, mouthpiece, reeds…!

If you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to ask.

I look forward to what is becoming a very exciting day!

Best wishes,

Jon Cranston
