When the BEAUTY team decided to work on the Best of Beauty awards, I didn’t think it would turn out be such a big thing. Since we are barely two years old, it took us sometime to get going. As an experiment I decided to chat up few of my close girl friends, and some of the beauty experts I trusted. It was over tea that we girls sat to discuss who liked what, and why. I never expected it to turn into a downright war, but that was what happened. It was not just heated argument but downright banging of tea cups – making my heart leap every time one of them would bang my favourite piece of china on the table. In fact no sooner did they finish their tea, I removed the cups albeit appearing rude but did not ask them for a second round.
So what was the reason for this tea cup banging you will ask? Simple, beauty products. As I sat with them listening to argument and counter argument I realised that product and brand loyalty is as strong as filial bonding, and loyalty. If one of them loved a cream she stuck to it for dear life – putting in all her faith, and using it to the last drop. One of my friends revealed that she so loved a particular body lotion, that she would keep her bottle upside down for days to catch the last drop of the precious potion. I accused her of being stingy, which she denied vehemently (I believe her, she hardly repeats her clothes). Her reason: she wanted every drop of that beneficial lotion to benefit her skin. She actually keeps two to three extra bottles in case she runs out of the lotion mid application. She can’t think of a replacement and dreads the day this product gets discontinued. She actually begged me help her search for an alternative now so that she is prepared. Well, she is not the only one I guess, I too am like that to some extent. I also hold on to my favourite lipstick for the fear of running out of it, and not finding an alternative. This also made me realise that beauty is no longer kitchen shelf therapy, nor is it to be pushed in to the background. Today for all women, and most men using good beauty products is a matter of feeling good, and getting a sense of happiness.

I have been reading Beauty Magazine for the last five months, and wanted to write to you about the How To section. I love to go through it every month. In fact it would be a great help to us; house wives, if you dedicate more pages to similar section. As I take care of my skin using home remedies only, Foot Spa at Home was a nice pick. By Debaroti Dasgupta, Housewife, Bangalore. Hair has always remained a matter of tension for me. I am always confused about how to take care of it during various seasons; one of my problems is solved, as, now I know how to take care of it during the monsoons. Please write about how to take care of it during summers and winters as well. By Sangita Agarwal, MBA student, Kolkata.
I am a complete foodie, and love to read just the food section of magazines. I find value in your magazine, so would love to see more columns on food and diet, and recipes. In fact I would love if you could dedicate more pages to this section. Today most magazines focus on diet stories that only suggest recipes that are fit for western taste buds, why don’t you write more about Indian recipes that can help lose weight? That’s one thing dieticians should also work on. By Bipasha Sharma, Bank Manager, Pune.
Waxing; one of the most important things that a woman should do to look beautiful and attractive, I believe that. I haven’t waxed yet, as I am yet in my teens, and I was scared which was the best procedure to go forward with. But thanks to you, now I know how to go ahead with it. By Sneha Sharma, Student, Delhi.
The section Tips From You has helped me a lot and I am sure it has helped many women like me. In fact it is quite an interactive page. You should try to put more pages where real readers can join in the beauty and health dialogue. By Pyaal Joshi, Event Manager, Kolkata.
I am getting married very soon, and I want to wear the latest trend on my wedding day without really blowing my budget. Can you please suggest what is the fabric and colour that is in? I want to look the best on my wedding day. In fact I would appreciate if you can add more real woman fashion that is affordable. Aana Roy, Marketing Executive, Mumbai.

Long hours of squinting at the computer can really take its toll resulting in dark circles and fine lines. The reason is that eye contour area is fragile and particularly vulnerable to dehydration. Being brought up in an Army background, ‘discipline’ was something that was instilled in right from the start. I attribute my success largely to my upbringing resulting in a well-rounded personality. Virtues like punctuality and etiquettes have been inculcated in me. I think these are the essential for every woman. Challenges in life keep me moving.
Good looking means:
I would define it as someone who is ‘comfortable’ in their own skin! I think more than good looks, it’s a person’s attitude and the way they dress that determines how they are viewed.
Her skin care regimen:
It’s simple! Cleansing, toning and moisturizing everyday and drinking lots of water.
Her hair care regimen:
My hair is very healthy and naturally strong and shiny. Because of my profession, my hair is battered and abused! Therefore, I make it point to oil my hair regularly and shampoo and condition it as well with Sunsilk shampoo and conditioner. I trim my hair once in about 2 months or as and when I feel the need and avoid highlighting my hair.
Her favourite make-up, hair and skin products:
I use the YSL Mascara, MAC Studio Fix Powder, MAC Blush, The Body Shop Lip Balm, Clarins moisturizer for face and hands. Aloe Vera is great for the skin. I love Sunsilk shampoo and conditioner.
On bad hair days:
Yes, of course, I have bad hair days! The first thing I do is send an SOS message to my hair stylist.
When skin feels bad:
Firstly, I make it a point to drink lots of water to hydrate my skin and apply my mother’s secret recipe… a facepack!
Favourite make-up trick:
I would say highlight your assets. If it’s your eyes then applying kajal and a little liner works best. For your cheek bones, the right blush will do the trick. It’s important for one to know the colours that complement you and what your best features are.
Any make up tips:
Moisturize and when you’re confused about what to do… just
keep it simple!
Her wellness and fitness mantra:
I work 19 hours a day… am over stressed, over worked and under paid! I would love to visit a spa as often as I can but with my hectic schedule, I don’t really get a chance to.
Favourite spa treatment:
I enjoy all aspects of a spa experience and don’t have a particular favourite. But if I was forced to make a choice it would have to be the Kerala Ayurvedic Spa treatment.
Her relaxation technique:
Music is very therapeutic for me. It’s something that has always been a passion.
Movies to look forward to:
Lots more lined up in fact. Many exciting new movies where you will see me in completely different characters from what I have portrayed so far. Vishal Bharadwaj’s Kaminey opposite Shahid Kapur is already out. Then there’s Ashutosh Gowarikar’s most awaited What’s Your Rashee?, and Yash Raj’s Pyaar Impossible marking the comeback of Uday Chopra.

Erase Fine Lines
The latest product Boxtlak-Bl promises to erase your fine lines and crow’s feet just like botox would without putting a syringe to your skin.
ho doesn’t love a smooth skin free of lines? But often the thought of prick of a needle around the eyes or between the brows stops you short of getting a line free face. Fine lines around the eyes, between the brows, and laugh lines can add years to your face making you look older than your actual age. Now there is a new solution to this premature aging, and photo damage to skin. Shalaks Pharmaceuticals has recently introduced its cosmo-derma product to address this problem. It has developed the anti aging cream Boxtlak-BL, which promises Botulinum Toxin A like results with regular use. According to the company spokesperson, “This is a new generation anti aging product that addresses the multiple causes of cutaneous aging acting directly on fine lines and wrinkles. It not only addresses problems in the face area but also

loosening skin on the neck.” What makes this cream unique that the peptides mimic the skin’s natural defense mechanism. According to the company the cream stands out from the rest because of the combinations of ingredients that make it effective. The prime ingredient is the BoNT-L Peptide that is similar to Botulinum Toxin A, which gives the skin a smooth appearance. The other key components include olive leaf extract – an antioxidant, gotu kola – an Indian herb that improves the development of connective tissues, Alpha Lipoic Acid – an anti oxidant to fight free radicals. The claim of the product is that when used twice daily on a regular basis your skin will remain smooth and young for long as the key elements in the product will sustain the skin from below.

It is called the ‘stiletto heel of makeup’, a slick of glamour in a tube, a red lipstick is a classic that comes back into limelight again and again; it never goes out of fashion really. By Ruby Chakraborty
ude is the preferred look, especially when it comes to lips. So you have the earthy nude, the nude pink, nude beige, and even nude brown. There are enthusiasts who swear by this; they claim to be unable to touch any other shade. But ladies get ready to dive deep into hue, for red is coming back with a back again this season. The models on international ramp have been sporting red lips – carmine, crimson, vermillion or even post box red. A red lipstick is as classic as a saree, which is popular in every season maybe in different texture or feel. This coming season the hue is voluptuous, waxy, creamy matte, but not ultra glossy. When you wear red, you make a statement. You must be prepared to be the centre of attraction. So you better get your red lip right.
Prepare your lips
When you decide to go red; then make sure your lips are smooth and free of flakes and chapped skin. Apply a lip balm and gently rub the lips with a soft towel to loosen chapped skin. Then apply the balm or a lip conditioner again to smoothen the skin. Then use a lip liner in your natural skin tone to line your mouth and fill the lips in – this will ensure that the lipstick does bleed and you get a clean smudge-free finish.
BEAUTY | SEPTEMBER 2009 31
Choosing a shade
Since the last time red was in trend the rules for choosing the shade has changed. According to top makeup artists the earlier rule was that blue red were for paler skinned girls, while orangey red was for warmer toned ladies. But now the rule is different. The occasion and style more defines who can wear what. A blue red considered more sophisticated, and to be work your little black dress, or sari for a more formal occasion. Hair is done up, slicked back or in a low bun. While orangey red is more causal, and can be worn during the day, at the beach when out with the girls of a shopping stint, with hair bit undone, or tumbling down your back. The best way to buy your red is to take a friend along who can tell you what looks good or what doesn’t. For a red to work on every occasion search for one that isn’t too yellow or too blue. Instead of a dry matte texture, pick one that is either creamy or has a satiny finish. That can be worn by women of any age. Ditch the gloss over red.
BEAUTY | SEPTEMBER 2009
Make it work
It takes a bit to carry off a red. You need to feel comfortable in it to wear it. Since it is bound to become the focal point of your look, so avoid bright or loose clothes for match with your red lipstick. Wear it with monochrome shade – think black, beige, and white. Choose classic cut clothes with simple lines. Wear it with too short a skirt, and you might be mistaken for ‘Mona darling’. Finally if you are not brave enough for a full on red pout then try dabbing a bit of red with your finger on your lips and smudge it slightly for a stained lips look – easy to wear, easy to carry off.

Sven Ewald, Chief Trainer, Pivot Point International, Germany shares specific hairstyling tips for Indian girls, that he showcased at Lakme Fashion Week.
arket reports say that the spa and salon industry in the country is growing at a fast pace. But women we have come across while doing the spa stories gave us a different impression. While they definitely loved the idea of getting pampered, and feel the stress drain away even as they come out glowing, but what stopped most of them is the overwhelming sense of doing the wrong thing at a spa. While women we spoke to were desperate for a massage, but did not like the idea of stripping. So our first advice based on what spa managers told us is that – you have every right to request for more cover up while getting a massage. Pedicure With A Difference
What: Freespirit orchid foot facial, and aroma manicure Where: Lakmé Salon, Cunningham Road, Bangalore.
It was not really the first time that I was entering the Lakmé Salon, so there was a sense of familiarity with the place even though it was in a different city. That’s what is good about all the Lakme Salons across the country. The decor, the lighting, the ambience and even the behaviour of the stylists and therapists are so uniform that you do not feel you have walked into a different salon in a different city. The same beige and purple decor greet you and so does a smiling receptionist, who ensures that you get the treatment you are looking for. That is what Lakmé Salon prides itself on – its hygiene, seamless service, and uniformity. Since my feet were aching, and hands super dry, so I decided to opt for the Freespirit Orchid Foot Facial, and Aroma Manicure. I chose this treatment as it uses floral extracts and essential oils to soften and hydrate dry, parched skin. To begin with my tired feet were soaked in cool water with rose petals in them. Then my pedicurist cleaned, filed, and smoothened my nails like in any pedicure. Post cleaning and buffing the feet and heels, a lovely floral foot scrub was massaged on my skin to exfoliate dead skin cells, and prepare the skin to absorb the creams better. After the scrubbing, my feet and legs were massaged with a cream with floral extracts. I could actually feel the skin on my legs and feet soaking it up. After that a cool, orchid foot mask was applied. In the end a lovely Lakmé nail polish was applied to prettify my feet. Then I requested my session of aroma manicure, which the manicurist said was the right one for my chapped hands. After the usual cleaning and scrubbing my hands were massaged with aroma therapy oils – a combination of almond and lemon grass oil. The massage was done with acupressure technique. Post the relaxing massage my hands remained soft, and nails shining for a week almost.
The salon offers various types of beauty services including facials, hair care, basic grooming, bridal, and hand and foot services. While it is a known fact that the brand has unique blend of facial therapies, but very few know that Lakmé Salon complements most of its specialised facials with what it calls hand and foot facials. According to Sushma Khan, National Trainer Skin, Lakmé Salon, the reason why it is called foot facial is because of the steps involved in giving the treatment. Like in a facial, the hand and foot facial also target problems like aging skin, pigmentation, rejuvenation, and refreshment. In fact the manicure and pedicure complements the specialised facials to make a holistic therapy session for a client.
The bill: Rs 425 for foot facial, Rs 275 for aroma manicure.

What: Anti-stress back massage, Foot reflexology massage and Spa facial.Where: VLCC Day Spa, Juhu, Mumbai.
VLCC Day Spa, Juhu warmly welcomes me through the glass and wood door. The lounge is elongated with the reception on one side and the staircase on the other. The staircase takes you to the upper stories, which hold the salon area and the treatment rooms. The spa gives the impression of an open friendly space for beautification.
Like any other spa VLCC Day Spa has a regular set of therapies, but the consultant at the spa highlights its signature treatment, the Fusion Therapy. Fusion Therapy, she goes on to explain, is a carefully crafted blend of traditional Chinese Acupressure, along with more modern refinements like Japanese Shiatsu, Jin Shin Do, Thai-Yoga Massage, Indian Chakra balancing and breathing techniques. Fusion therapy weaves many different treatment options into a gentle and effective tapestry of touch, treating many common problems that plague our everyday lives. The techniques used in this therapy helps combat stress by trying to reduce the tension build up in the muscles and also boosts the body’s immune system. Apart from decreasing muscular tension and increasing the removal of metabolic waste Fusion therapy also promotes nutrient delivery to healing tissue caused by extended periods of stress.
My session at the spa started with the Spa Facial and a massage. I was taken to a massage treatment room, where I was given the Anti-stress back massage using Thai Flower Oil. Anti - stress back massage is a treatment to release muscle tension from the stress zone of the upper and lower back, neck and shoulder, enlightened the Spa Consultant. My therapist knew the places in my body where the tension knotted, she gently but firmly removed the chronic kinks there and particularly on the
vertebral column. After the massage, I was taken to another therapy room, where another therapist was to give me the much awaited facial, while the first therapist gave me the Foot Reflexology Massage – it actually relieved the aches in my feet and calf muscles. The facial on the other hand started with the special VLCC protein bleach to de tan my skin. Then she cleansed my face and neck with cleansing milk. Now it was the turn of exfoliation by apricot scrub and steam. For the massage, initially honey was applied all over the face and neck. Then coconut milk was used to massage the stressed and tired skin of my face. Spa facial helps balance the skin, enhances circulation while adding extreme moisture, leaving the skin with a healthy glow. Post massage, came the orange gel face pack for my oily skin. She rounded off with a sunscreen with SPF 30, so that as I came out, I could face the sun without the fear of tanning and UV rays after the rejuvenation treatment given to me.

A Regal Treatment
What: The Royal Mughal Hamam Where: Kaya Kalp – The Royal Spa, ITC Mughal, Agra
You simply walk into an opulent luxury where you know your needs will be taken care of and more. An octagonal marble room with a large heated marble plinth in the center and carved alcoves with water basins on either end is filled with fragrant steam, diffusing the golden light from candlelit niches along the mother of pearl inlaid walls. The Kaya Kalp calls itself a Royal Spa and this is truly a well deserved epithet. Set in its own 99,000 sq ft area within the grounds of ITC Mughal, Agra, the Kaya Kalp manages to infuse this vast space with the aesthetic quality which the Mughals were famous for. Taking from history, the spa’s prime motif is the exotic pomegranate, and the décor is truly Mughal in nature. In the hot summer months you walk through a fine mist of water – just like in the olden days – into a lounge adorned with fountains, and water channel. This is not just décor, it actually calms your mind so that by the time you enter your therapy room your nerves are soothed and ready to receive. much talked about Royal Mughal Hamam – a treatment that takes you back to how the royal Mughals did it.
What an extraordinary 100 odd minutes I spent in the Hamam! It was not just a simple bathing ritual, it was exotic and luxurious to the core. It is such an indulgence, simply letting your go at the soothing hands of experts on their job. I lay comfortably as the therapist carried out a deep body scrub using a loofah. This was indeed the most amazing deep cleansing Persian inspired body scrub with traditional, natural ingredients called, ‘Mughal Style “Kese” Body Scrub’. It left me with a super soft and clean skin. Then came Argan Oil, Mung Bean Soap Massage. This was the ultimate cleansing soap as this rich foamy mixture is slathered over your body from head to toe, and rinsed clean leaving skin silky soft to touch. That was not all. Soon I was given a ‘Relaxing Scalp Massage’. It is supposed to release all tension as your hair goes through a nice shampoo and condition exercise. Feel the stress ebb away from your head, neck and muscles and luxuriate in extravagant style. Finally there was the ‘Tea Ceremony’. This was the time to rest or socialize and chat with your partner or friends while enjoying the Mughal style refreshments. To confess, I simply surrendered myself to the Hamam episode. Did I emerge from the Hamam feeling re-born? Yes indeed, a royal lady of the Mughal era.
There are eight luxurious treatment rooms at Kaya Kalp, to mirror the garden of Eight Paradises that the Mughal emperor Babur wrote about creating in Agra. Each room offers different therapies, from Ayurvedic and Thai massages to spa experiences that have been designed especially for the Kaya Kalp. Taking on from the pomegranate theme, there is the Exotic Pomegranate Journey – a full body treatment using pomegranate extracts and other ingredients. But the signature is the

As I lay on the crisp white bed the therapist gently exfoliated my body with Organic cane sugar scrub mixed with blueberry pulp on my skin. A shower after scrubbing detoxified the skin impurities and now it was time for a light massage with delicious blueberry lotion. Truly, it was a complete delight for my tired limbs. Following the massage my senses were once again uplifted with the sweet fragrance of blueberry paste for wrap. This 15 min wrap toned up my body and restored the softness of the skin. As I came out of the shower my skin felt satiny smooth and my face bloomed with sheer happiness. This distinctive approach of coupling various massage techniques helps relieve sore joints, stiff muscles, stimulation of points addressing blocked energy, as well as improving blood and lymph circulation; all together leaving the patron with a complete sense of rejuvenation. Follow up this massage with a Jasmine Touch body treatment. This fantastic floral wrap is meant to bring out your positive energy. This therapy blends Jasmine flowers along with marigold or rose water and fuller earth and helps nourish, rehydrate and tighten skin pores. A concoction of marigold (ideal for oily skin) or rose water (for dry skin) provides an excellent astringent effect to tighten skin pores while fuller earth makes the skin soft and improves the complexion. Jasmine flower, rich in ester oils helps calm the nervous system and rehydrates the skin. Complete your session with the Delicious Honey facial treatment where rich honey is used to rehydrate the skin making it glow and toning it up.
The well-appointed reception is done in soothing white. Though small, the spa in the Delhi has a sense of airiness with it big glass doors. According to the manager, the spa at the hotel in Chennai is the largest property for the chain. The inner sanctum of the spa is done in wood, and stone, which exudes an earthy aura. It is definitely value for me at Iosis.
I needed to balance my mind, so I decided to try the Hot Stone Therapy and cleanse my chakras. As I entered the spa area, a dermatologist interviewed me about my skin, and health habits. After thorough consulting she declared me fit for taking the therapy. I was then introduced to my two therapists. It started with a light pressure dry massage to warm up my body. Then the two therapists applied aromatic oil on my body and massaged using two basalt stones each, starting from my legs. It was the Swedish massage technique that they used. While my legs were being massaged, warm stones were placed strategically on chakra points on my body. Usually, hot and cold stones are alternated in Hot Stone Therapy and for the cold effect marble are used. But in Iosis, they use the same basalt stones for the cold effect after freezing on ice. Once I turned over on my back, two warm stones were placed on my palms, and small cold stones on my eyes and forehead. Immediately, I started seeing flashes of bright white light turning into amber colour waves. It was sensation so totally new for me, it was exhilarating. After a while stones were slowly removed, and my face and head were massaged using acupressure moves. Once I was out of the room, all I felt was a sense of calm, totally ready to face the world. The bill: Rs 2000
Unlike other day spas, Iosis Medispa is located on the first floor and you need to climb up a sturdy wrought iron staircase. You might feel bit lost at first, but once you reach the area, the spa is quite something. A brain child of actress Shilpa Shetty and Spa therapist Kiran Bawa, spa exudes warmth and a sense of comfort. The place does seem a bit small for a spa, but it is divided into a salon area, where you can get foot reflexology therapy. It’s the therapy rooms that are really attractive. The dim lights are very soothing to the nerves after the harsh sun outside.
Iosis offers a variety of skin and spa treatments besides the usual salon services. The skin treatments include scar removal, skin renewal system, microdermabrasion, eye zone treatment, sebum control, skin repair system, acne control, sensitive rosacea, anti-aging, bust firming, face moulding, skin regenerating, face contour advance treatments among others. To begin with, my beauty therapist Nahida had a close look at my face. The t-zone, dark circles, black heads, the sun tan and what not meant a dose of Aroma Facial. The treatment started with cleansing and scrubbing keeping the t-zone oiliness in mind. The steam given with it opened my pores so that they could be unclogged easily. Then she put a towel dipped in cool water with few drops of tea tree oil on my face to close the open pores. A customised pack was made and applied. Afterwards the vitamin E enriched moisturizing cream massage soothed my tired face muscles and neck. All refreshed, I made my way to meet my hairstylist, Ajay. Considering my profession, hair texture, face shape and body, he advised me to go for a lot of layers to minimise the volume from my thick wavy hair. My hair was all in his hands – the clips, the scissor, the blow dry and the straightening. Eventually, the result was exactly what I wanted. With a luminous skin and a swinging hair cut I couldn’t take my eyes off the brand new me.

started the treatment by conducting a long scalp and hair analysis with the Capilliscope. Since my scalp appeared oily and strands dry and roots weak in some areas, so Perez decided a combination of soothing scalp treatment, followed by a strand moisturising wash, and finally a root strengthening potion. The 1 hour 30 minute therapy started with a special brushing technique to eliminate dust, take out loose strands, and stimulate the roots. It was a totally new way of brushing hair, and once Perez finished it, my hair seemed to increase in volume. After that my scalp was massaged with the Complex 5 essential oil
Ravissant Beaute is one of the upmarket salons in the city that offers exclusive treatments and therapies. The salon has always been known for the excellent hair therapies, and quality of stylists. Done up in white, this spacious salon has a well appointed area for hair treatments and therapies. The salon also has separate area for other body treatments, and facial rooms.
The salon in partnership with Modi Revlon has introduced the French expert hair care treatment system Rene Furterer. This hair care system work on the belief that if you treat the scalp, the hair will naturally grow healthy. The products used in this hair and scalp treatment are all based on pure plant extracts, and essential oils. All the therapies are customised using different sets of products depending on the specific need of the person. Said Diego Perez, International Stylist, Rene Furterer, “What most hair spas offer is a way to treat hair problems, but in our therapies we start the treatment from the root of the problem that is the scalp. We do a thorough analysis of the scalp condition, state of the hair roots, and the texture of the hair itself. Based on that then we design the specific treatment for the person.” So your scalp might be treated for oiliness while your strands for dryness and sensitiveness. At Ravissant Beaute, the new service will offer treatments for eight types of hair and scalp problems including oily scalp, moisturising, nourishing, hereditary hair loss, incidental hair loss, anti-dandruff, soothing irritable scalp, and colour-treated hair.
I was lucky enough to get Perez to do my therapy. He
based serum that improves microcirculation in the scalp. Then the moisturising Karité treatment was massaged on my strands, and scalp, and the hair was shampooed with a hair wash from the Karité range. Since I was suffering from incidental hair loss, so Perez gently applied the RF 80 potion to the roots of my hair. Then he banned me from blow drying my hair for at least two washes to avoid damaging my scalp, and strands. Besides the heavenly massage in the salon, and silky hair immediately after, the treatment did show results even after just one treatment, as I noticed no loose strands on my comb for at least 10 days after that.

therapeutic in nature and are meant to treat body problems like arthritis. In fact, the beauty lounge is in the process of adding on newer therapies. Says Ruchita Sachdev, the owner, “Though at present we are not completely into arthritis, but we give a feel good spa regime for such patients. People have misunderstood the meaning of spa as just massages. That is not what it is. Definitely it is massages, but it is also taking care of your body. These treatments make the body supple, beautiful and vibrant. In head spas, we have feel-good spas and treatment spas. For feel good spa treatment, we hydrate your head. We also have hair-fall and antidandruff treatments, treatment for sensitive scalp, people having psoriasis. We help people manage their hair in the given climatic conditions of Mumbai.” The most expensive in hair spa is a keratin treatment. What is interesting is the ear candle treatment that K9 offers. It is the only salon in Mumbai to offer this till now. This you can combine with a body or face treatment. Ear candle is a hollow candle with a stopper inside it. When inserted into the ear and lit, this ear candle creates a vacuum inside the ear and thus helps drain the toxins from the lymph in the head area. K-9 also has body polish with glycolic peel, which is popular with brides.
I decided on a body treatment along with the unique ear candle treatment. It started with a cleansing treatment. After the cleanser, came the Tranquil Mint scrub to exfoliate the dead cells and smooth the skin. Post scrub I did feel a little raw, but the steam on my body helped soothe this, and prepped my skin. Then came the best part – a massage first with the body butter, followed by another round with an aromatic oil. The therapist used pressure point massage technique to drain out toxins from the lymphs. Post the 60 minute massage, Sachdev herself did the candle treatment on me. Then the body treatment was resumed as I was cocooned in a rubber like body mould or body mask to hydrate, tone, soothe, and smoothen my skin. I was informed that if done on a regular basis this mould can also lighten the skin of my body. After this I sat in the Jacuzzi as water jets relaxed me further. Finally the treatment came to an end with the application of a body spray and a cream. I just felt like saying oh lovely!
Simple is how I would describe this salon, what really attracts attention is the small temple of Goddess Lakshmi from Kolhapur right in front of the glass main door. The layout of the lounge is very easy to navigate as you move from the cutting and styling area to the hair spa region. For other treatments the salon is well appointed with separate rooms for facial, massage and Jacuzzi. One thing that is interesting here is that K9 has installed a Jacuzzi for body therapy – a first in a Mumbai salon; something that’s generally found in spas.
K-9 specializes in hair spa treatments and body spa treatments. Currently you can get body treatments that are

TRUE To Type
UK’s leading tresspert Guy Kremer, the Artistic Ambassador for L’Oreal Professional , shows you how to make the most of your hair type based on your facial shape By Gayatri T Rao.
hile working on Indian hair, we look at the face shape. We change the way the woman looks after looking at the shape of the face. That’s the way we make them look more beautiful. A lot of Indian women have long hair. We will make sure that they still have long hair but its shape is more suitable to their face. So we will cut the hair in such a way that it matches the face shape and the body line. My advice is that get a haircut every 6 weeks. Without this no amount of product or styling expertise will look good.
The hair types:
The human mane falls in into three categories – Round hair, which is Asian; Flat, curly hair, which is African, and Auburn hair, which is of European origin
can have a nice bob. But if your face is bigger then I suggest longer hair.
Treat long hair well:
Long hair is fragile and has to be treated with respect. Most long hair is at least 4 years old. Treat it with deep conditioning masque regularly and leave the products on for as long as possible. Shampoo it gently. If your face is a little fat and you want to cover all those flab, then I suggest a little bit of body around the cheek region. Give a little volume nearer the face and let it bounce off the shoulders. This gives a little triangular shape.
Styling curly hair:
Asian people have round hair.. Sometimes they have flat hair. That doesn’t mean that they are Afro. But their hair is like a ribbon and comes out curly. If the hair is naturally curly, we do not cut them short, because they will bounce up back again curly. This type of hair has to be treated with a protein shampoo, and a moisturizing conditioner. After that work in a little bit of anti-frizz serum. So I will give it a little bit of shape, but still keep it as much long as possible, otherwise it will look too puffed up.
Medium hair works best:
This length suits all kinds of face shapes. It goes well with round, elongated or square faces. To style simply blow dry medium hair, take some of it away from the face and balance it with a fringe.
Tips for thin hair:
I wouldn’t let it be too long because it is thin. I would cut it into a shorter bob, to get more volume into the hair. If it is too long, it will become flat. Tip for thick hair: You can give it a beautiful bob or keep it long. You can have short layers on longer ones. You can try every style on thick hair, because you can take as much hair you want for the cut.
For wavy hair:
In this case also I like to treat it the same way as curly hair. Long layers look nice on this hair type.
For a girl on the go:
I would recommend a nice practical hair cut which is like a bob or a layer. You can’t give her a high maintenance look. So she should get a cut which fits in with her schedule. If she wants to look sexy then she can have temporary hair extensions done, particularly when she wants to look very couture in the day, and at night she wants to have long hair.
Keeping hair short:
If you have a face like Mandira Bedi, you can have a style like the one she wears. She had long hair but she looks better with short hair. So when you have a petit face, you

ot many know it, but your hands and feet show signs of aging faster than your face. The reasons are many. They get as much assaulted by dirt and pollution as your face. Then there’s the added stress of frequent washing of hands which can strip the natural moisture from the skin, increasing the alkalinity. In fact not taking enough care can actually lead to discolouration of nails and fungal infections.
It is important to use hand creams to rehydrate your hands after every wash. It is more important if you have used harsh detergents.
use ingredients like floral extractions, orchid essential scrub, ceramide creams, and white tea moulding mask to treat different hands and feet problems.
When you are feeling exhausted and tired, and have aching limbs then foot reflexology session can be very beneficial. It is a holistic healing technique that improves lymphatic drainage and removes toxins within the body. It is highly relaxing. The moves also leave your hands and feet feeling lighter.
Foot creams help:
Use a rich cream on your feet every night to restore your skin, which suffers through the day. Always wash your feet as you reach home and before applying the lotion. This will also keep your nails free from any infection.
Since humidity can cause infection so use an antiseptic soap or a foot-wash to wash away grime. Also before you wear shoes dust your feet with an anti-fungal power. This will also keep your feet smelling fresh.
Just push, don’t snip:
When you are getting a pedicure and manicure ensure that the therapist does not cut your cuticles. Instead he or she should push it back and remove only the dead layer. That will avoid infections and keep nails healthy. In case you develop infection, please wait till it gets alright before going in for a professional session.
Once in 15 days visit a professional manicurist and a pedicurist for complete treatment. Go for hydrating treatments complete with scrub, mask, moisturiser, massage – the works. At Lakmé we have what we call hand and foot facials that replicate the balancing facials that we offer customers.
Care in between:
In between professional treatments do take care of your hands and feet. Besides regular cream massages, also do small at home hand and foot care. Remove nail polish, file and trim your hand and toe nails, then soak them in warm soapy water, add some lemon to it to have a lightening effect. Use a face scrub to slough off dead skin cells, then wash off and massage a good cream. You can also soak your nails in olive oil to strengthen them and give them a natural shine.
Facials for hands and feet:
We have various types of hand and foot facials where we pamper your limbs so that you are mentally and physically relaxed. We

Young Mumbaibased painter, dancer, advertising professional, and aspiring entrepreneur Shrusti Rao reveals her fascination for that must have for lips; the lipstick
ipstick for me is not a mere cosmetic containing pigment that give colour and texture to the lips. Being a painter, I am sensitive to colours and their effect on how you are presented to the other people. If you wear it, it makes you feel confident to face the world. As a child I always saw my Mom using lipsticks but I was strictly told not to touch them. Though I was introduced to lipsticks as a child, my love affair with them started only when I completed my school. I had taken admission for my under-graduation in Fine Arts. Even then it was only restricted to special occasions. I went crazy the first time I saw my Mom wear it. My mom is very beautiful and the lipstick just kind of enhanced her beauty completely. She would use those typical maroon and dark brown shades so popular then. She would complement it with a dark and large maroon bindi. Since I was not allowed to touch the lipsticks, I never got to emulate her as a child. But I yearned to wear them on occasions other than when I would perform on stage.
Tube Of Pigment
Now I use glossy liquid lipsticks or lip gloss and like a bit of shimmer in my lipstick. I like using lighter shades closer to pink, peach and mauve. Previously, I was familiar with brands L’Oreal, Maybelline and Lakme, so naturally I would buy from their collections. But recently I splurged on my favourite cosmetic; I picked up different colours being offered by Revlon, Maybelline, and L’Oreal. Though I did not really need to buy all, but the advertisements sort of swayed my decision. Since I love colours so I am not really brand loyal. I can pick up a lipstick anytime if it catches my fancy. I love the first sensation of opening a lipstick and turning it out to reveal the bullet of sheer pigment. A shiver of thrill passes through me every time. For me the feel and the colour of the lipstick are very important aspects of aesthetics, rather than the brand. After spending a childhood of lipstick ban, now I am on my own with a freedom to wear any colour to match not my clothes but my mood.

BeYu is trend make-up in an amazing, ultra modern range of colours and cool designs. Top make-up artists create the BeYu style make-up to give maximum effect.
Makeup for all
Addressing almost all the fashion needs of today’s cosmopolitan woman, the range is targeted at an audience between 25-40 years of age, users of premium colour cosmetics, who are extremely style conscious and in sync with the latest beauty trends. These cosmetics are being advertised with the positioning statement – Be Yourself -BeYu, which offers the brand proposition of an independent, broad minded woman, who is confident and has a mind of her own. Suitable for all skin types, the range includes mineral make-up, lipsticks, foundations, eye shadows, mascaras, eye liners and nail enamels. “We have introduced a complete range of products covering lips, face, eyes and nails and will soon be launching a lot more innovative and inspiring ranges. So we have the wide range of over 600 products, in different variants. And especially for the market here in India, we have launched, nearly 130 products, which exactly match the skin tone of the Indian woman,” Reinhard added. He insists, “One of the biggest USP of BeYu is that there is an enormous wide range of colours. For example, if we take only the lips, we have more than 60 colours only in lip-liners, which I think is out-standing in the market.” Out of this wide range, the maximum sales of BeYu in Europe is mostly in the eye make-up range especially the eye shadow, while it is the lip sector worldwide, starting with lip gloss, lip-liners to lip sticks up to different kinds of shiny lip sticks as well. The highly trendy fashions of Ibiza, New York, Milan, Paris and Munich are taken into consideration while designing the cosmetics. Besides cosmetics, BeYu is also into eyewear and accessories.
Sascha Reinhard, Managing Partner, Innovative Cosmetic Brands GmbH: Makeup Factory and BeYu revealed that “In 1999, BeYu was launched originally in Germany for the biggest chain called Douglas. They are the market leaders in retail in Germany, with more than 420 stores only in Germany and over 1000 shops all over Europe. We made an exclusive contract with them.” BeYu’s market share has been constantly increasing and it is one of the fastest growing make-up brands in Germany and abroad. Since its launch BeYu expanded gradually and is currently available in more than 35 countries. After getting good support globally, they decided to launch the brand in India. Regarding the launch, Reinhard added, “We were planning to launch BeYu in India for some years now. But first of all we had to find the right partner. And we were sure Elder Health Care is a good partner.” Speaking about the alliance with Elder Health Care, Reinhard said, “We are delighted to collaborate with Elder Health Care to establish our brand in India. BeYu has an international appeal with a wide product range to suit every fashion need.”
Of many choices
The company’s headquarters are in Munich, where the creative team, production, sales and administrative departments work together in a closely knit network to turn the latest international fashion trends into cosmetics concepts. Regarding product and brand awareness among women he is very confident. “One of our main points is outstanding high quality. Once a woman has bought a product of BeYu, we can more or less guarantee she comes back and buys the product again. We have not done any compromises of quality in our product. You can compare the quality of our products with that of brands like MAC. Even in some areas, we can say that we are better than them.”
Revel in colour
BeYu improves the beauty regime of a woman. Reinhard’s advice to women is to choose the colour of the cosmetics according to their inner feelings at a given point of time. “Express yourself and be yourself. So we are not telling the women, that our product is good, take it. We give them the wide range of products and tell them to choose exactly the one which suits them. This makes us different from all the other brands in the market.” Asked what beauty message the brand takes to the consumers, Reinhard replied, “BeYu, i.e. Be Yourself. So we want to take the message to the ladies to Express Herself. Choose the colours according to how you feel. That means Be Yourself. That is how we go the brand name BeYu.”

Skin Quality T
John Keats said once, “A thing of beauty is a joy for ever: Its loveliness increases; it will never pass into nothingness; but still will keep a bower quiet for us, and a sleep full of sweet dreams and health and quiet breathing...”
his sort of defines what Vichy Laboratories is all about. Q. Define Vichy as a beauty brand.
At Vichy, we believe that health is the safest, most effective and most advanced path to achieving a truer, more visible and sustained beauty. In concrete terms, we have decided to intensify our approach of health in terms of beauty.
us to develop the most potent and comprehensive anti-wrinkle solutions.
Q. How did Vichy Laboratories come about? Tell us more about the founder.
Vichy was created by a brilliant and visionary man called Doctor Haller in 1931, who saw health as the key to beauty. His ground-breaking idea was to apply the rigor of the medical world to making healthy skin more beautiful - a true revolution! He became the first person to describe and define different skin types, a clear example of his extraordinary vision.
Q. How do you bring product and brand awareness among women? What is the benefit of using Vichy products? How do Vichy products improve a woman’s beauty regime?
Vichy is also a responsible brand that conducts massive education and prevention campaigns: the “Skin Health Centres” where we help consumers understand their skin better, “Sun Schools” – educating children and adults on the need for Sun Protection. Each year, we interview and diagnose 40,000 people in 42 countries worldwide. For example, we have recently learned that, in the sun, parents adopt riskier behaviour for their children than they do for themselves… We have also demonstrated that women who look after their skin can look between 4 and 10 years younger than women who do not. Until now, this fact has never been objectively assessed. The 2nd stage of our approach/strategy, following the acquisition of new knowledge and understanding, is to boost the potential/obtain the very best form of major active ingredients. These are major Pharmacopeia and Dermatology active ingredients, with recognized efficacy, which we are able to drive further forward/exploit even more effectively/empower even further thanks to advances in pharmaceutical research. For example, Lift Active Reti-HA, a new breakthrough antiageing product, draws its efficacy from a unique combination of Retinol and Hyaluronic acid a combination of ingredients used by dermatologists to treat wrinkles worldwide. The 3rd stage of our approach/strategy is the introduction of active textures. Finally, the art of formulation, of texture, with the dual-objective of safety supported by pleasure and the aim of making the support texture itself active. At Vichy, our formulae are effective even before they are infused with active molecules.
Q. What were the first products?
This great man of science had made an exceptional discovery: Vichy Thermal Spa Water, a unique, mineral-rich water with the capacity to soothe and heal skin, empowering skin in peak health with irresistible beauty. Originating from the town of Vichy in the mountains of Central France, Vichy Thermal Spa water has been renowned since the 17th century for its dermatological properties. It is highly concentrated water filtered through the earth’s deep volcanic layers that contains 15 mineral salts and trace elements. Combining this breathtaking water with his scientific expertise, he succeeded in producing the most effective products of his time. The second stroke of genius from this exceptional man was to put Vichy in the hands of the pharmacist, thereby creating the field of dermo-cosmetics, first in Europe and then worldwide. Pharmacists and dermo-advisers have, by virtue of their highquality advice and recommendations, made the pharmacy one of the most credible and trusted channels, i.e. a place of maximum efficacy, tolerance, safety and ethics, when it comes to skin care and skin beauty.
Q. When did Vichy reach India? What was your first product launched in India?
Vichy was launched in India in 2002. Vichy launched in India with a range of products to meet every skin need. The original launch range consisted on Bi-white (skin pigmentation range), Normaderm (Range for oily, acne prone skin), Lift Activ and Reti-C (Anti-ageing), Capital Soleil (Sun Protection) and cleansers for sensitive skin (Purete Thermale).
Q. What is the beauty message your brand takes to the consumer?
Our Vision: Health is at the heart of beauty. A beauty that is more intense, healthier and truer. Believing in health means looking at skin in a unique way. Once that is understood, everything begins and builds from deep within. Knowing that without science nothing can advance. And that to treat only the surface neglects the essential. Realising that true beauty is more than just what appears on the surface, authentic beauty stems from skin health. Vichy products comply with strict dermatological standards for effectiveness and safety. They are allergy-tested, and dermatologist tested for safety. All our products are noncomedogenic so do not block pores hence minimizing breakouts, are tested on sensitive skin, and contain skin soothing Vichy Thermal Spa Water to help reinforce the natural protective function of the skin
Q. Give us some insight into your modern research in this field. What is the USP of the brand Vichy?
Firstly by stepping up our acquisition of new knowledge and understanding of the skin, in a breakthrough research, Vichy has done a scientific study on wrinkles and their formation by studying in great detail women over a 20-year period, analyzing their wrinkles at monthly intervals. This exclusive Vichy study, carried out on the same group of women over a 20-year period, aimed to track the evolution of every individual wrinkle with unprecedented precision and reliability. This gave us a unique insight into the diversity of wrinkles and how they form, allowing
Q. What are the best sellers of your brand?
Best sellers of Vichy in India are the Bi-white range for skin pigmentation, Normaderm the range for oily, acne-prone skin, Capital Soleil – our sun protection range and Aqualia Thermal our hydration range for sensitive skin.

Tips From You…
Well shaped and groomed eyebrows are the fastest way to open up your face. I like to keep mine trimmed, and save time and money by plucking strays with a tweezer, in between my threading sessions. I pluck at night to avoid redness. When grooming at home always use an old toothbrush to comb the hairs one way and then other to trim extra long ones. Always comb the brow upwards and outwards to get the actual shape. I like to use a dark brown powder eye shadow with a brush to fill in my brows for a more natural effect. By , home maker, Kolkata
Best skin, hair, makeup, health, diet, and fashion tricks and secrets for you from BEAUTY readers
To make thin lips appear fuller, use a nude lip pencil or a lip pencil matching the colour of your natural lip colour, and line on the outer edge of your natural line. Then fill in using the same colour. Then use a light hued lip colour over it and top it off with a little gloss on the centre of your upper and lower lips. By Lakshmi Rao, Home Maker, Mumbai.
To make my hair extra smooth, shiny and easy to manage before an event, I like to apply fresh milk to my scalp and strands. I keep it on for about 10 minutes and wash it off with hair smoothing shampoo. It works well in times when I run out of conditioners, also soothes dry scalp. If you are confused about all the shoe styles and colours that come into fashion, and don’t want to fill up your wardrobe with pieces that you can wear only once then try this. Invest in classic shoes that remain in trend season after season. Pick up a ballet pump in a bright hue like blue, red or even purple, a stack heeled strappy sandal, an ankle length bootie in black, and a basic black stiletto pump in satin.
