									NOTES ON CONFLICTS
CONFLICT -- a struggle or clash between opposing characters, or between
opposing forces. Without conflict there is no drama, no interest, no suspense---in
other words, no story.
1. Man v. Man (or animal)

2. Man v. Nature (such as storm, flood, or weather conditions)

3. Man v. Society

4. Man v. Fate (Destiny, God, the inevitable)

5. Man v. Himself

INTERNAL Conflict v. EXTERNAL Conflict

(Himself) (Fate, Nature, Society, Man)

THEME -- The central idea of a work of literature.

SYMBOL -- A person, place, thing, or event that stands for itself and for something
beyond itself as well.

In literature, writers create symbolism to give a deeper meaning to the stories,
novels, plays, and poems they write.
