02. Introduction
A drug-eluting stent (DES), also known as a medicated coronary stent, is a tiny, expandable
metal mesh tube that is covered with a therapeutic drug. DESs are used in patients who suffer
from coronary heart disease (CHD) due to obesity, diabetes, or renal insufficiency. After an
artery has been treated through angioplasty, there is a chance that the artery might reclose
due to blood clots or too much local tissue growth. Thus, a DES is positioned in narrow and
clogged arteries.
