LG KE970 – is a metallic slide-up phone with a mirrored exterior. It is nice and shining. LG-
company makes the image phone lovers happy again with presenting the new product "Shine".
It's worth reminding that the new LG fashion-line phones issue started in 2001 (510w being the
first model). As compared to the other phones of that time, 510w was remarkable for its small
size, original design and a great variety of bright case colours. Similarly equipped flip phones
w7000 and w7020 followed the first fashion-family models, being different only in its exterior
and internal display (in both cases it was STN matrix but the second modes had a screen capable
of rendering up to 65k colours). The case of w7020 was decorated with leather patches as well as
the first "fashionable" LG 510w. After these models appeared, the Korean company concentrated
on issuing the new phones for the regional market. The new phones for the world-wide mobile
market appeared but they have not become as popular as the first three models. The situation has
radically changed when the model LG KG800 appeared, which was assigned its proper name
"Chocolate". "Chocolate" was to the taste for lots of gourmets as it was white, bitter black and
even exquisite red. At the beginning of 2007 a new improved "Chocolate" KE800 came into the
market, being no less beautiful but having improved firmware.
KE970 known as "Shine" is now taking the place of LG Chocolate bestseller. The new Korean
company product is worth its name – it really shines. Good functionality is added to a good
image exterior that gives the new device good chances to become the leader in the image phones
segment. But the company itself positions "Shine" not as a successor of the LG Chocolate phone,
as both phones enter the line of Black Label – a new line of image phones. Metallic flip-phone
and metallic monoblock are going to appear soon to add to the metallic slide-up phone. It's easy
to guess that all of them have the common name "Shine".
First of all the phone attracts your attention with its shining case practically completely made of
metal. The front and the rear faceplates have aluminium finish made by "Styled in metal"
technology. The plastic details are not numerous – they are only the bottom of the phone, the
side parts and the area round the digit key pad. The case surface has a pleasant feel, it is
fingerprint-proof and does not slip in your hand.
The assembly quality does not give rise to complaints either: all the details fit well unless there is
a slight play of the upper portion of the phone. There are camera lenses on the back side of the
phone. The back door has no design elements except for LG logotype. The door is totally made
of metal and is fixed hard with no wobbles. The microSD memory card slot is on the left side of
the phone but you cannot get any access to it without removing the back door of the phone.
The left side of the phone is empty as all control keys, namely: the MP3 player and camera keys,
volume pairing key as well as the Pop Port for attaching a charger or an enhancement (it is
protected with a plastic cover) as on the back side.
The butt sides of the phone have no keys. The key on the spring latch opens the back panel.
There is an aperture for a strap in the left corner. But the phone has solid dimensions and weight
that is why there can be some problems with wearing it on your neck.
The phone is comfortable while operating, it fits into your palm comfortably. The slider
mechanism is quite firm but opening the flip with one hand does not require any efforts die to the
wound-up spring. The only drawback of the construction is lacking the set place for a thumb.
The protruding dial ring can serve this set place to push the slide open but while gliding the flip
down it is turned or pushed with your thumb starting the quick launch menu. That is why you
have to place the thumb above the dial ring right on the mirrored panel. Everything would be
fine and comfortable if there were no fingerprints after that. But the mirrored surface of the
screen unfortunately attracts smudges and fingerprints easily and is covered with stains in few
minutes losing its exterior view. Nevertheless, these stains are easy to remove with the help of a
piece of soft cloth.
The mirrored panel covers a wonderful TFT-screen with 240 x 320 pixel resolution capable of
displaying up to 262144 colours. The physical size of the screen is 33 x 44 mm. The grains are
practically unnoticeable, the colours are live and rich, the scripts are smooth. You can also adjust
the display's brightness as well as the duration of a backlight. The viewing angle is quite broad,
the image does not fade and the information on it is easy to read. But the display is difficult to
see in the glare of direct sunlight; when the sunlight is moderate the mirrored panel often blanks
that also makes working with the phone difficult.
There is a face keypad under the screen. It is made as a navigation ring and four soft keys. Two
of them are contextual and have standard exterior viewing, they are represented with a metal
layer and two other ones are connected with the navigation rings in a peculiar semicircular
section rest pad. As it has already been mentioned above it is not good as a rest pad but it
absolutely replaces the navigation key. Turning the ring, which has a rib-knit texture, is
responsible for surfing the menu and gives quick access to switching the telephone profiles and
SMS-menu in the standby mode, and while pressing it the ring works as the confirmation key.
The keys on the sides of this layer do not turn, you can only press them. The right one opens the
Contacts menu and the left one opens the Available menu where you can add up to 9 items. The
functions are currently assigned to the two left and right soft keys and you cannot change them.
It is pleasant to work with the external key pad, the buttons are big and comfortable, and small
soft keys by the joystick are quite bulging and give a comfort feel when pressed.
The inner keypad represents a metal plate in Motorola RAZR style. All the buttons are flat,
levelled with the phone's surface and are separated by distance in staggered rows. The first key
chain consisting of the Send, End and Clear keys is situated quite close to the upper part of the
phone; nevertheless no problems while using these keys have ever risen. The buttons are tight
and tangible to press though there are no palpable boundaries between them; there is practically
no chance of hitting the wrong buttons. The keypad is lit in unequal blue, being brighter at the
soft-keys and answering keys and paler at the alphanumeric area. Nevertheless all the key
signatures are quite visible in dim conditions.
The phone has the following dimensions: 98 x 51 x 14 mm and weighs 115 gr. As you can see
from these numbers, the phone can't boast about miniature size, vice versa, it is big enough and
you can explain its big weight with the metallic case. Though it looks quite accurate and fits in a
man's hand as well as in a woman's one perfectly.
The phone is powered by Li-Ion battery with the capacity of 8000 mAh. The manufacturer
claims that the battery is sufficient to work the phone for a standby time of up to 72 hours and a
talk time of up to 3 hours. It takes the battery for about an hour to recharge.
The phone's interface is represented in the only colour solution (black and blue), and any picture
including the animated image or a photo can be the desktop wallpaper. The display upper line
traditionally contains status information. The line with the provider's name is under it and you
can switch it off if you want. The bottom line displays the functions currently assigned to the soft
keys. The clock and date information line is above it. The digits on the display when dialling the
number are quite big that people with week sight can well appreciate. Besides, you can choose
one of four dialled figures displaying styles: regular, electronic and italics where the bottom is
made as a notepad sheet and the pencil follows the signs writing. There is one more variant
which is not less beautiful – the digits on the coloured balloons.
The main menu consists of nine shortcuts, which can be changed into the list. You can use the
numeric navigation for quick access for this or that aspect with the help of all numeric
consequences. All the sub-menus are reflected in the kind of the lists and you can switch
between them pressing the navigation keys. The menu structure is well thought out; searching
the function you need does not arouse any difficulties. You can't change the navigation and soft
keys settings. You can only change the Available Menu. The on-screen prompts for the functions
adjusted for the navigation key can be reflected (or vice versa hidden).
Telephone directory (here mentioned as Contacts) can be opened from the phone Main menu or
by pressing the right soft key. The numbers are reflected in the phone list both from the phone
and SIM-card memory. A small symbol shows where exactly the number is saved. You can
search the number by the first letters of the name. There is one inexplicable and uncomfortable
fact acknowledged that the search line typed is completely cleared while searching the name by
the first several letters at the moment when the user starts turning the list manually. We can
assume that most users prefer searching the number they need manually.
You can add the name, four phone numbers (mobile, home, office and fax), e-mail, photo, ring
tone and a note to every contact entry. For every incoming call the image paired for the contact is
displayed on the screen as well as the caller’s name and phone number. The types of phone calls
are fixed, it’s impossible to create tow “mobile” or “home” numbers. The highest possible
number of symbols in the name field is about 41.
There are two possible ways of contacts displaying in the Contacts menu – “Name only” and
“With an image”. The “list” is not a simple list of names, and in the “Image” mode the contacts
are displayed with the photo and number assigned for the name. The phone memory is capable of
storing up to 1000 entries. You can't create any contact groups, only 6 predefined groups can be
used but you can choose their names, symbols and assign a separate melody for them. There is
also a function of copying the contacts from the SIM-card to the phone memory and back. You
can also send and receive all the contacts as business cards and create your one business card,
there are also the fields for a name, four phone numbers and e-mail; you can send your business
card by SMS, MMS, e-mail or via Bluetooth or just insert it into your SMS. Storing your own 4
numbers and creating your own business card are also possible, there are fields for setting your
name, four phone numbers and e-mail; you can send your business card by SMS, MMS or via
Bluetooth. You can add 8 numbers into your quick dial menu.
The calls history is in the main menu. There is information about the recent calls, the status of
each being reflected by a small icon. The next items are incoming calls, dialed numbers and
missed calls. The items are arranged in the history as bookmarks, you can use soft-keys for
navigation between them. All these items can be also opened with the send key, all calls list
being the first on the menu. You can also see the incoming calls, outgoing calls and the last call,
as well as all the calls and GPRS data transfer meter in the Timer-menu.
There are five telephone profiles in the phone. You can set up one of standard ring tones or any
ring tone you like. You can set up only one of four standard tones as a notification about a new
SMS. All the other signals are also set up here: sliding up tones, button tones. For quick access to
switching the telephone profiles you can turn the navigation ring down in a stand by mode.
The Message folder includes the folders for incoming messages, in-built e-mail client, templates
folders, voice mail messages, drafts and outgoing messages. You can save up to 300 messages in
the phone memory. The Draft folder contains 6 standard SMS-messages, you can change them or
create your own ones, and there is an empty folder for MMS-messages. You can attach images,
video, melodies or photos from your camera to your multimedia message. There is an attached
object limit of 300 Kb in size.
You can type the message text by using a standard multitap keypad input as well as an
intellectual predictive input system. Its use can arise no problem and if the word does not exist in
the dictionary you can manually add it. Switching between upper and lower character modes,
intellectual predictive numbers and letters is made by pressing the number sign button, for
switching between the languages enter the menu by pressing the apteryx button.
All PIM applications (alarm clock, calendar, calculator, notes, stop-watch, converter, world
clock and SIM menu) are in the Accessories folder.
There is only one alarm-clock which can be set up for a singular or everyday response, you can
also choose between one of four response schemes by the days of the week (Mon – Fri, Mon –
Sat, Sat – Sun, Sat – Thu), you can't choose separate days of the week. You can also set up an
alarm clock tone here, unfortunately, it can be chosen only from several tones having been set up
before for the alarm clock.
The calendar view has only three types: monthly or daily. You can't differentiate the events by
type, they are just simple reminders which can't be more than 100. You can adjust the signal
time, the event length (time period or the whole day). By the way, you can set up any calendar
reminder signal – a standard melody or even a user's composition. There is an option of
displaying all the events in one list and a quick switching to any separate date.
The calculator is quite comfortable and understandable, it can calculate different functions,
square and root, find sine, cosine and factorials, etc. You can also use the brackets.
The world clock function, mentioned here as "Time zone", displays the current time in different
time zones. The application is well-designed and supports a lot of cities round the world.
Converter allows converting different length, weight, volume, area, speed, temperature measure
and currencies. The stop-watch has 6 marks for intermediate timing results.
The "Note" menu allows creating simple notes without any notification of up to 80 symbols. You
can send them at one by SMS, MMS or e-mail. The maximum number of notes is 100.
All Java applications are in "My folders" folder (which is a kind of file manager) in the "Games
and applications" folder. There are 2 standard games, Bubble Soccer and Fishing Mania. The
first game is a kind of Tetris, the second one is a fishing simulator and quite exciting. For
installing any third-party Java application you can transfer a *.jar file via Bluetooth and install it.
The manufacturer claims the possibility of viewing the documents as there is a set up application
Power Point. But while testing this function we didn't manage to transfer the *.doc, *.pdf and
*.txt filed via Bluetooth. It could be the prototype manufacturing fault that's why it's difficult to
say, what documents you can exactly open (except for presentation).
The "Multimedia" folder includes Dictaphone, but the record length is restricted by the free
memory size, you can also set up the 30-second limit for transferring the file in *.amr format by
MMS. The Dictaphone supports recording the phone talks.
Music player in the phone is quite simple and sounds good enough but the quality and loudness
are much lower than even Sony Ericsson Walkman. The player supports MP3, AAC, AAC+,
AAC++ formats. Among the settings we should mention equalizer, which changes the sound
reasonably. There are the following playback modes: 3D, Concert, Jazz, Pop, Rock, Dance, Live,
Bass and Country 2. There are no adjustable equalizers, you can't also check the set up equalizers
options. There is only one (general) track list, and there are the following playback modes –
repeat one, repeat all and play all, or random choice. You can change visual effects: real
spectrum or simple spectrum. You can manage your music player by using the navigation ring
and soft-keys. There is no fast rewind and the real backward and forward rewind is limited to 1-
second step that is very uncomfortable, especially while listening to long-time compositions, for
The telephone has a MicroSD cards slot and the total internal memory is about 46 Mb. It’s not
too big but nevertheless it’s sufficient enough to have some favourite songs and about half a
hundred photos with you.
Connectivity facilities of LG Shine are big enough: there is Bluetooth support, GPRS and
EDGE, synchronization with PC via connection cable or Bluetooth is also possible. While
connecting via the cable you can look over the internal memory of the phone as a storage device.
All the software necessary comes in the sales package on a disk. You can plug in a stereo
Bluetooth device (A2DP profile is supported). There is also an in-built 2.0 browser that allows
looking through web pages.
2Mpix camera with LED flash is onboard, German Schneider-Kreuznach lens being used. While
taking photos the display acts as a viewfinder and turned horizontally, the camera trigger
mechanism is on the right but, taking photos is quite comfortable, there is a tiny mirror by the
camera lens for making self-portraits.
We should mention the following settings:
Photographing modes – macro, autofocus of switched-off autofocus;
Photographs resolution – 1600 x 1200; 1280 x 960; 640 x 480; 320 x 240 pixels;
Photos compression quality – excellent; Fine_01 or normal;
Self-timer of 3,5 or 10 seconds;
Saving options – telephone or SIM card;
Multy shots – a series of 3 or 6 photos;
Exposure meter – center or combinated;
Special effects – negative; black and white; sepia;
White balance – night mode; fluorescent; clouds; filament lamp; day light or auto;
Shutter sound – 3 variants or silent;
The phone camera captures still shots of sufficient quality but only with sufficient lighting. With
electric lighting the shots containing a great number of noises. Macro shooting is effective at
about 10-12 sm. While shooting with the flash the light diode is constantly on, in complete
darkness it can lighten an object at the distance of up to 50 cm well enough.
Photo samples (all the settings are automatic):
Macro shooting samples:
With the help of the camera you can capture video clips of MPEG4 format. You can choose a
desirable resolution, the biggest being 176 x 144 pixels. You can send your video by MMS, but
the video capture length is limited. As well as in the cameral there are compression ratio, white
balance, special effects options.
All the photos as well a video captured are saved automatically in My files folder, Images folder
where all the melodies, images, photos, video clips and other files are traditionally stored. You
can send them by e-mail, MMS or via Bluetooth. Unfortunately, you can’t choose and send
several pictures at the same time, only one by one.
Connection quality while testing the phone didn’t arouse any problems, the signal perception
level is reliable , an integrated speaker is loud enough, the audibility is good. You can record the
talk on the dictaphone. Vibration volume is big but the ringing tone volume is sometimes weak,
you can’t here it in loud places. In terms of Megafon Moscow network with about 20 minutes of
talk a day, listening to music for about an hour, an our use of Java-applications and testing other
functions the phone worked for about a day and a half. It’s worth mentioning that during long
talks and using Java-applications the phone battery was considerably warming. On the whole, the
situation with all devices working time is practically the same – battery lasts for about two days.
The main disadvantage and simultaneously advantage of this phone is a mirrored panel and
metallic case. On the one hand, it’s quite beautiful and on the other hand it’s not practical. As it
can be seen in the photos, the case, disregarding the fact that it is made of metal, is abrasion-
prone and the mirrored inserting is easily soiled and while using it is quickly covered with stains.
But surprisingly, there are more tiny scratches on the case than on the mirrored surface. It is
worth mentioning that the display is absolutely unreadable in the bright sun glare.
Among LG Shine advantages we can mention its metallic case and mirrored exterior. They
positively create an excellent exterior view of the model and as this phone is regarded as an
image model, the design is one of the most important components for it. Comparing LG Shine to
a recent bestseller LG Chocolate having the glossy case, we can say that it’s a great success that
there is only one stains-prone thing in the new phone – its mirrored panel. A good functional can
also be referred to the advantages: there is a MicroSD memory cards slot, Bluetooth-profile
A2DP support, you can look over the documents including the Power Point presentations (*.ppt).
Among the competitive phones we can mention those that hasn’t started selling yet (as well as
our Shine) Samsung U600 and U700. Among U600 advantages there is 3,2 Mpix cameral,
smaller size and weight.
Summarizing all the above-mentioned, we should say that the model turned out to be quite
unusual due to its design and it will have a great demand among the beauty lovers, as Shine
looks good enough both in the man’s and in the woman’s hand.
