                  Autobiography/Biography/Memoir Book Project
                    This project works together with our Literary Nonfiction unit that we have been
                     working on for the past week and will take us to the end of the first quarter. The
                     majority of the work will be completed in class with the exception of some reading
                   and final revisions and project adjustments. This project is 2 test grades (1 for the
               flip book and 1 for the presentation/project).

PROJECT:
All students are to read an autobiography, biography or memoir novel about a notable figure of their
choice. Teacher will have final approval. Once students have completed reading the books (30
minutes a day for the next week will be given in class to finish reading the novel), students are to
complete a flip book based on the directions below. Flipbook will be set up in class and most work
will be done in class; however, you should see these being worked on at home as well in order to

INSTRUCTIONS:

Step 1: READ, READ, READ! WE HAVE ALREADY BEGUN THIS PART, WE HAVE BEEN READING IN CLASS
FOR A WEEK! Continue reading the autobiography/biography/Memoir
        This autobiography/biography/memoir should be PREAPPROVED by me.
       BRING YOUR BOOK WITH YOU EVERY DAY TO CLASS!!!
           Step 2: Really, this is a part of step 1.
           As you READ, take notes on the information you need from
           below. This is call ACTIVE reading. It will help you retain the
           information your have read and stay focused.
           Use the Post-It note-taking strategy shown in class on
           Tuesday, September 27, 2011! I will periodically check for
           post-it tabs in your books!

Step 3: Complete the information for the flip book. FOLLOW the DIRECTIONS in this Packet!!!!!

Step 4: Research any needed flip book information your autobiography/biography did not include.
Make sure to write down the sources where you found this additional information.

Step 5: Create your final Flip Book project and prepare your presentation.
We will start this in class on Monday, October 3rd! All notes must be done by then.

Step 6: Proofread and finalize your final project, making sure it is your BEST effort!

FLIP BOOK CONTENT AND DIRECTIONS
                   Part of your grade for this project will include your ability to FOLLOW directions.
                   PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, follow them!
                   Let this be a SUPER, FANTASTIC grade for you!
                   An example will be shown in class.
                   All flip books will be provided and folded for you in class. I can only give you ONE
                   so keep in nice and neat. If you would prefer to use colored paper or decorative
paper or scrap-booking paper (SUPER IDEA), you may bring it in and I will fold it for you if you like.

TOP FLAP: DECORATE- Make it neat and colorful. NO STICK FIGURES!!! This is your COVER.

VITAL STATISTICS: Label the bottom of the flap Vital Statistics. See class example.

   2. Birth place and other important places to the person/Family Information
   3. Education/Training/special skills if applicable

LITTLE KNOWN FACTS: Label the bottom of the flap Little Known Facts. See class example.
    1. Interesting experiences the person has had/Things that interest the person
    2. Pets, appearances, clothes, cars, hobbies, etc.

FLAP 4: (Use bullets or numbers. No complete sentences needed for this flap.)
OBSTACLES: Label the bottom of the flap Obstacles. See class example.
   1. Troubles, problems, obstacles, hardships, etc.
   2. Reaction to these obstacles
   3. Character trait revealed (honesty, hardworking, patience, etc) because of obstacle—BONUS
       points for including how this person fits the IB Learner Profile. (Hint: see my door frame)

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Label the bottom of the flap Accomplishments. See class example.
   1. Goals reached or surpassed
   2. How did these accomplishments help or enrich the life of others or the world?
   3. List inventions, records or awards earned. You may also include well know ideas, writings, etc.

FLAP 6: MY REFLECTIONS: Label the bottom of the flap My Reflections. See class example.
In paragraph form (3 total paragraphs, COMPLETE SENTENCES), you must answer the following
questions. Pay attention to correct punctuation, capitalization and spelling.
This sections count more than all of the others.
Questions to answer:
   - Paragraph 1- What Life Lesson(s) have you learned from this person that may help you in your
       life now or in the future? Be sure to use examples from their life to explain your answer.
   - Paragraph 2-Write about your feelings and impressions about this person.
   - Paragraph 3- Write a concluding paragraph about whether or not you recommend this book.
       Give well thought out reasons.

                      Remember, I will reward creativity!!! Most points will be given to those who look
                      prepared and have put extra effort into presenting.
                      IDEAS: Dress up like your character. Create a skit. Make a visual. Perform a news
                      cast. Make a brochure or advertisement for your book. BE CREATIVE!
