Biochemistry Research Paper
Objectives: To develop technical writing skills. To gain an understanding of scientific literature
research. To further individual understanding of biochemical disorders.
The Assignment: Each individual will be expected to choose either an enzyme disorder or a
metabolic disorder and write a research paper on this disease or disorder.
Topic: The topic for each research paper must be either a disease of metabolism, or a disease
involving an enzyme. Sample topics have been listed on my website at http://a-
Length: The paper is expected to be 5 – 10 pages double spaced, one sided, with one inch
margins, and font either 10 pt or 12 pt. The paper should be written in Standard English in
Grading: This assignment will be worth a total of 150 points. This will be divided into four

Topics must be chosen from either list posted on the website OR other approved disease. If
you do not choose a topic from the approved list, you must pre-approve your topic to make
sure you receive all 5 points for a valid topic.
The short introduction should be about one half of a page providing an overview of what you
expect to cover in your paper. This does not have to be detailed.
The rough draft should be a rough draft of your final paper. It should include all section of the
final paper but does not need to be in final form. This rough draft will be read by 2 other
students in the class for feedback.
The Final Paper should be between 5 and 10 pages double spaced. It should include an
introduction, biochemistry of the disease, health implications, and how the disease may be
Plagiarism: Plagiarism will not be tolerated. All work must be properly referenced. Plagiarism
can be, but not limited to: directly copying information from a reference. Using significant
portions of a reference with only minor edits, or failing to cite a source. Plagiarism or cheating
in any form will not be tolerated; all work that you turn in must be in your own words and must
be your own work. Cheating in any form will result in a zero on the assignment for all students
involved and academic misconduct forms will be filed with the Office of Judicial Affairs for any
violation. Judicial procedures are described on the webpage of the Office of Judicial Affairs.
References: It is expected that a minimum of five references be used for this assignment, of
which only one can be a website. This means you must have at least FOUR references that are
NOT websites. There is no limit to the number of references.
