                                 1st Grade and Kindergarten
                                           Week 14

Theme:         Transportation
Functions:     Seek information and clarification
               Describe actions and sequence

Objectives/ Language Uses: Students will be able to: properly answer “how”, “where" and
“what” questions using targeted transportation vocabulary.
Students will be able to: describe how they are going to go somewhere using targeted
transportation vocabulary

Materials:
      * Rigby picture cards (Kindergarten Unit 8 #1-6 and 3rd Grade Unit 3 #3 and 6)
      * Teacher created or gathered pictures of a skateboard, taxi, and a scooter
      * Manipulative chart, Kindergarten, Unit 8 “I will ride on a bike when I come.”
      * Rigby big book, “From Here to There”
      * Question sentence frame, “Where is ____ going?”
      * Teacher made poster and handout with sentence frames:

   1.                                                                  “_______ is going to the zoo
        _______ _____________.”

Monday
I do it:
* Teacher had short discussion on how he/she and students come to school (i.e. what type of
transportation they used)

We do it:
* Introduce modes of transportation on manipulative chart “I will ride on a bike when I come.”
* Sing chart song (Kindergarten, Unit 8, Manipulative chart #1)

I do it:
* Teacher reads big book, “From Here to There”

We do it:
* Group discussion of new types of transportation introduced in book (taxi and car)

Tuesday
 We do it:
* Sing manipulative chart song, “I will ride on a bike when I come.”
* Introduce picture cards that are used to sing the song “I will ride on a bike when I come” and
story, with addition/discussion of truck, bus vs. school bus, and differences in sizes of boats
* Introduce using the word “in” in place of “on” when talking about taxis, trucks, and cars in the
sentence frame, “I will ride in a car/taxi/truck when I come”.
* Sing song using sentence frame “I will ride in a car/taxi/truck when I come”

Thursday

I do it:
* Discuss meaning of transportation (“different ways to go places”)
* Review 3 places Marco went in story, “From Here to There” and how he got there (reference
to back flap of big book)
* Tell students that they are going to pretend that they are going to the three places in the book
and they need to decide how they are going to get there (make sure you have all the modes of
transportation Rigby picture cards posted somewhere)
* Teacher models this activity with teacher-made sentence frame poster

You do it:
* Students fill out and illustrate sentence frame worksheets

Friday
We do it:
* Teacher hands out sentence frame worksheets from Thursday making sure students don’t get
their own paper
* Teacher introduces question sentence frame, “Where is ____ going?”
* Each student stands while group chorally asks, “Where is ____ going?”
* Student answers question about other student using worksheet

I do it:
* Teacher introduces question sentence frames, “Where are you going?” and “I am going to the
park/zoo/circus _______ _____________.”

* Repeat group activity where group asks, “Where are you going?” and student answers “I am
going to the park/zoo/circus _______ _____________.”
