KIDS, 8 to 13, some in baseball uniforms, play tag. YOUNG
NATHAN RAINES, African-American, 11, wearing a San
Francisco Giants uniform, “RAINES” on the back, runs from
an OLDER KID.

Young Nathan zigs and contorts his body to avoid the tag.
The older kid moves on to a YOUNGER KID and tags him hard.
The younger kid stumbles and FALLS hard and awkward.

                     YOUNG NATHAN
                (firm)
           Hey, take it easy.

The older kid turns and SMIRKS as Young Nathan approaches.

                     OLDER KID
                (sarcastic)
           If he can’t take it...

The older kid is suddenly SHOVED hard and FALLS. The older
kid jumps up and turns. YOUNG MIKE STONE, Caucasian, 11,
also in a Giants uniform, ”STONE” on the back, stands
nearby.

                     YOUNG MIKE
           Not much fun is it?

The older kid steps aggressively towards Young Mike and is
again SHOVED hard and FALLS. The older kid rolls over.
Young Nathan and Young Mike stand together.
                                                              3

Other KIDS gather. The older kid slowly gets to his feet
and walks away. A human whistle BLASTS nearby. Young Nathan
and Young Mike snap their heads around.

                    KEITH
               (loud)
          Nathan. Mike. Let’s go.

Young Nathan and Young Mike jog over to Keith. Nathan jumps
in line at the snack shop.

                    KEITH
          I saw what you did.

                    YOUNG MIKE
          You gonna tell my mom?

                    KEITH
No, but don’t make it a habit.

Keith playfully pushes Young Mike on the back of the head.
Young Mike turns and smiles, and joins Young Nathan in line
at the snack shop.

BETH STONE, 32, and Young Mike sit watching TV. The door

carrying a small bag, runs out passed Keith.

                    KEITH
               (playful)
          Nice to see you too.

Keith turns to the open door. Beth appears and tries to
hand Keith some money.
                                                              4

                   KEITH
              (waves it off)
Don’t worry about it. On me tonight.

                    BETH
         Thanks.

A van door SLIDES open off screen. Keith starts towards the
van.

                   KEITH
I’ll have Stace drop him off in the morning.

The van door SLIDES shut. Keith walks to the van.

                   BETH
              (light sarcastic)
And try to keep the candy to a minimum this time.
Or I’ll start sending you the dental bill.

                   KEITH
              (over shoulder walking, smiles)
Don’t worry, already heard it from the wife.

Beth waves to the van. Young Mike and Young Nathan wave
back through the van window.

INT. MOVIE THEATER LOBBY – MOMENTS LATER

MOVIEGOERS pile out of the theater. Young Nathan, Young
Mike and Keith appear and walk to the exit.

                   YOUNG NATHAN
Man that was awesome. The dinosaurs looked so
real, especially the T-Rex. Glad those things
         aren’t around anymore.
                                                              5

                    KEITH
          You and me both.

Young Mike ROARS and jumps on Young Nathan, almost knocking
him down. They laugh and exit with the crowd.
EXT. GAS STATION – LATER

Keith exits the store and returns to the van parked at a
gas pump. Keith sets up the gas pump, turns and leans
against the van.

KEITH’S POV, a YOUNG FEMALE SHOPPER exits the store and
walks around the corner out of sight.

An ATTACKER, late 20’S, follows the female shopper with a
purpose. A van STARTS off screen.

Keith turns to the van across the street.

KEITH’S POV, the van exits a parking lot, creeps down the
street and around to the back of the gas station.

Keith STOPS the pump and OPENS the driver’s door.

INT. KEITH’S VAN - CONTINUOUS

Young Nathan is asleep in the back and Young Mike plays on
his Game Boy. Keith pokes his head in.

                    KEITH
               (nonchalant)
I’ll be right back okay. Stay in the van.

EXT. GAS STATION - CONTINUOUS

Keith CLOSES the door and walks off toward the store. A
MUFFLED SCREAM and BREAKING GLASS sound. Keith bolts toward
the back of the store.

EXT. BEHIND STORE – SIMULTANEOUS

The attacker, one arm around the female shopper’s waist and
the other hand around her mouth, drags her towards the van.

The van door SLIDES open.
                                                              6

                    VAN DRIVER
               (quiet)
Hurry the fuck up. Let’s go.

The VAN DRIVER, 30’s, starts to move back to the driver’s
seat.

INT. VAN - CONTINUOUS

VAN DRIVER POV, two hands SMACK onto the attacker’s
shoulder and neck. The attacker and female shopper are
YANKED away from the open door.

EXT. BEHIND STORE - CONTINUOUS

The attacker releases the female shopper, who FALLS to the
ground in shock.

The van driver appears around the back of the van and Keith
shoves the attacker into him, knocking them both down.

Keith pulls the female shopper up from the ground and
pushes her back towards the front of the store.

                    KEITH
               (urgent)
Get’n the store. Call the police.

The female shopper runs toward the store.

EXT. GAS STATION - SIMULTANEOUS

UNKNOWN POV, approaches the side of the store. The female
shopper appears and runs into the store. The unknown POV
PEERS around the corner.

EXT. BEHIND STORE - CONTINUOUS

                    KEITH
               (hands up)
Alright fellas relax, it’s over. Just take off.

                    ATTACKER
               (angry)
          Like hell it is.
                                                              7

The attacker lunges at Keith. Keith’s defensive movements
are untrained but athletic and powerful. The van driver
follows.

After a few moments, the attacker is left wounded on the
ground behind Keith and the van driver, bleeding from the
mouth, takes a step back and removes a knife.

Keith turns thinking of fleeing, but the attacker starts to
get up blocking his escape.

                    KEITH
               (turns back to van driver)
          C’mon man, don’t be stupid.

BEHIND KEITH, the attacker also removes a knife.

Keith realizes the seriousness of the situation and his
demeanor changes. The van driver lunges.

Keith slides to the side and grabs the van driver’s arm and
forces it up into the van driver’s neck. The van driver
slowly SLUMPS to the ground. Keith pauses in shock.

BEHIND KEITH, the attacker stabs Keith in the side.
Keith WINCES, jumps to the side and turns. Keith avoids the
attacker’s first slice to his face, then gets cut on the
arm.

The attacker stabs at Keith’s stomach. Keith catches the
attempt with both hands and pulls down. Both fall to the
ground.

Keith quickly jumps on top of the attacker. The attacker
swings the knife at Keith’s head. Keith dodges and grabs
the attacker’s arm and forces the knife into the attacker’s
chest, putting his full body weight on it. The attacker
MOANS, then goes limp.

Keith slowly tries to stand and drops to a knee. He reaches
around to his back and his hand returns covered with dark
blood. A pool of blood starts to form around his knee.

                      YOUNG NATHAN (O.S.)
                 (loud)
          Dad.
                                                              8

Keith looks up. Young Nathan runs over to Keith, who slowly
crumbles to the ground. Young Nathan drops to Keith.

                    YOUNG NATHAN
               (breaking down)
          Dad, you okay? What’s wrong?

Young Nathan notices he’s kneeling in a pool of blood.
SIRENS become audible in the distance.

                    KEITH
               (calm, slow)
Tell your mother I’m sorry. I love you guys. Be
          good...

Keith dies. SIREN noise increases.

                    YOUNG NATHAN
               (prodding Keith)
Dad, wake up. C’mon wake up.

PULL BACK, Young Mike stands at the corner watching Young
Nathan and Keith.

                                              DISSOLVE TO:

Rodgers and Nathan quickly approach the barricade. OFFICER
#1 taps SERGEANT BROOKS and motions to the detectives.
Brooks turns.

                    NATHAN
               (sarcastic)
Real subtle. Wonder if he knows we’re here.

                    BROOKS
          Don’t start detective.
                                                             9

                    RODGERS
          Any confirmation he’s in there?

                    BROOKS
          No.

                    RODGERS
          How many exits?

                    BROOKS
Not sure yet, still settin’ up a...

THREE GUNSHOTS fire near the building. All flinch except
Nathan, he’s already flying towards the building.

                    RODGERS

Rodgers starts off after Nathan.

Nathan glances around.

NATHAN’S POV, a WOUNDED OFFICER lies against the building.
The SUSPECT, 20’s, slightly overweight, rounds the corner
at the end of the alley.

                    NATHAN
               (back to barricade)
          Officer down.

Nathan holsters his gun and runs to the wounded officer,
alert, but bleeding from the head.

                    NATHAN
               (approaching)
          You hit ‘em?

Nathan slows down near the wounded officer.
                                                             10

                    WOUNDED OFFICER

a fence and FALLS to the other side.

                    NATHAN
               (running)
          Police. Freeze.

The suspect glances back, gets up and continues on. Nathan
hits the fence and clears it with ease.

EXT. APARTMENT BUILDING, ALLEY EXIT – CONTINUOUS

Nathan appears and stops. The alley opens up to a busy
street. Nathan scans all directions. TRAFFIC and PEOPLE
erase any chance of locating the suspect.

INT. NATHAN’S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM – NIGHT SAME

ALICIA RAINES, 5, sits watching television. The front door
UNLOCKS and OPENS off screen. Alicia turns and jumps up.

INT. NATHAN’S HOUSE, FRONT DOOR – CONTINUOUS

Nathan enters with a shoulder bag. Alicia speeds around the
corner.

                     NATHAN
               (forced smile)
          Hey there.

Alicia latches onto one of Nathan’s legs. Nathan hugs her
with his free arm.

                    NATHAN (cont’d)
Glad to see you feelin’ better.

KAREN RAINES, late 20’s, appears around the corner. Nathan
looks up at her.
                                                             11

                    KAREN
          Didn’t think you’d...

Karen notices something is off as she approaches and gives
him a kiss.

                    KAREN (cont’d)
Everything ok? You look tired. More than usual
          anyway.

                    NATHAN
Got a break on a case, but he got away. Spent the
rest of the day out lookin’ for him.

                    KAREN
          I’m sure you’ll find him.
               (pause)
Sit and relax for a little bit. Dinner’s still
          got about twenty minutes.

Karen heads back to the kitchen. Nathan looks down at
Alicia, still latched onto his leg and smiles.

                    KAREN (O.S.)
Oh hey, Mike called about lunch tomorrow.

                    NATHAN
Ok. Remind me to call him after dinner.

Nathan sets his bag and keys on the ground and smiles as he
looks down at Alicia.

                    NATHAN
               (playful)
          Let’s see. Maybe if I...

Nathan tickles Alicia to release her hold and flips her
upside down. Alicia squirms and GIGGLES. Nathan flips her
back over and sets her on the ground.

Alicia LAUGHS and frees herself, then runs to the kitchen.
Nathan picks up his bag and keys, and follows.
