Collectively, members operate several thousand services for Australians with all types of disability. NDS members range in size from small support groups to large multi-service organisations. NDS WA also manages the Companion Card program. The Companion Card is a tool to assist organisations and businesses that charge an admission or participation fee to comply with existing anti-discrimination legislation. The Companion Card is issued to people with a significant, permanent disability who can demonstrate they are unable to access most community activities and venues without attendant care support. The service is free and is available to people with disabilities, their associates, carers, family and community organisations working with people with disabilities. Services are provided from offices located across metropolitan and country Western Australia. The services are targeted at people in receipt of Centrelink or workers’ compensation payments. Programs are tailored to meet individual needs. Staff work in partnership with clients to help them determine their needs and abilities, decide on the right type of work they can undertake, gain the skills and experience they require, and provide assistance to find and keep a job. CRS Australia also runs career planning sessions for registered job seekers. The DAAWS program provides eligible employers with incentives to accommodate the physical employment needs in the workplace. To be eligible for the service, a person must be assessed by a job capacity assessor provider – please contact the local Centrelink office for further information. Create Employment caters for people with any disability in the northern, eastern and central metropolitan regions. AIM Employment is one of the services provided by the Autism Association of Western Australia Inc (AAWA). In addition to the open employment program, AAWA is dedicated to delivering a range of specialist services to people of all age groups with autism spectrum disorders including counselling, early intervention, residential, community and educational support. BIZLINK can assist by finding a job that matches the skills and interests of the jobseeker, including traineeships, apprenticeships and school based traineeships. Training and support at work, or for work, is provided. To be eligible for BIZLINK services a person must be: • • • • • • 15 years of age and older living within BIZLINK’s service region motivated to work and willing to accept support from BIZLINK able to travel to work independently (initial training can be provided) meet Centrelink eligibility criteria (can assist with all the paperwork if required) supported by their family or significant other to seek employment. DEAFinite is an initiative of the Western Australian Deaf Society. It also services the employment needs of people unable to access open employment through Good Samaritan Industries business service (warehouse and retail stores). Services include: • • • • • assistance in identifying goals and compiling a career plan a placement service for work sampling in integrated work settings on the job training and support placement into paid employment ongoing monitoring and support when required to maintain jobs. Training services Pep delivers nationally accredited training programs in a wide range of areas (eg hospitality, security, warehousing and storage, preparation for work and office skills). Pep’s programs are developed in consultation with industry representatives and employers to maximise employment outcomes. All training programs are delivered in a flexible and supported learning environment, with a strong emphasis on meeting the special needs of individual students. Occupational health and safety is a primary entry requirement for Pep’s courses. Prospective students must be able to undertake the training without undue risk. There are also literacy requirements for certificate II level courses such as warehousing and security. Employment services There are two employment services for people with disabilities which complement Pep’s training programs. Centrelink determines eligibility for both services. • Choice program assists all people with disabilities and specialises in working with people with vision impairment, people who are deaf or blind and those with Aspergers Syndrome. Consultants work with individual jobseekers, arranging employment placements and providing follow up on the job support to both clients and their employers. • Jobsmart serves both people with disabilities and other disadvantages including recipients of disability support pension, Newstart and Youth Allowance, parenting payments and carers seeking to return to work. The program aims to place clients into sustainable employment resulting in real long term outcomes by providing support and financial assistance. Personal support service Pep also delivers a personal support program that provides assistance to people with special needs due to the severity and multiplicity of their barriers to employment. Centrelink determines eligibility for this service. Rocky Bay Employment Services has expertise in assisting people with physical disabilities (including people with degenerative disabilities, cerebral palsy and spina bifida), head injuries, intellectual and learning disabilities. The service works closely with other health professionals including occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech and hearing pathologists and psychologists to ensure the best job match and job support occurs. SMP is a non-profit organisation funded by the Australian Department of Employment and Workplace Relations for people who are assessed as being eligible by Centrelink. SMP also provides an alternative to employment program for people with a disability who are funded for this service by the Disability Services Commission. The program helps clients maintain or further develop skills that will enable them to access the community and possibly consider the option of seeking open employment when this is appropriate. SMP: • • • assists clients to identify appropriate areas of employment provides individualised support aimed at developing individual independence maintains regular contact with clients and their employers to ensure career progression and long term job security. Ruah Workright is funded by the Australian Department of Employment and Workplace Relations. Offices are located in Maylands, Joondalup, Maddington, Fremantle and Rockingham. Eligibility criteria: • • • • • • a primary diagnosis of psychiatric illness 15 to 65 years of age and live in the metropolitan area committed to gaining and maintaining eight or more hours of work a week assessed as eligible by a job capacity assessor willing to sign an authority to disclose non-identifying information that is needed to provide the service willing to declare their income to Centrelink. ‘Job in Jeopardy’ is a service for people living with mental illness who are employed and at risk of losing their job. This service is available to people who are not registered with Ruah Workright’s employment program. Essential Personnel services cover the Avon Valley, Central Wheatbelt and Midland districts.
