CLUB FIXTURES

A 2007 match card is enclosed. Please make every effort to play for the Club and contact the relevant
match organiser as soon as possible to express your interest in being selected.
Details of fixtures can also be found on the Club website at www.vltcofgb.org.uk
This year we play host to Fitzwilliam LTC of Dublin, and also the Norwegian Veterans, whilst we hope to
build on the success of our inaugural fixture in 2006 against the Dutch, with an away visit to Amsterdam in
October.
Our Honorary Match Secretary Cary Willson has relocated to Canada after a year of hard work for the Club
and we are pleased to welcome Niall Sweeney into the role as Cary’s replacement on the Committee.
Niall would be pleased to hear everyone’s views on the current fixture list, so please email them to him at
niall@msm.com or post them to Niall Sweeney, Little Barn, Pains Hill, Limpsfield, Oxted,

EVENTS

Tennis/Social Weekend at the Palace Hotel Torquay
A marvellous two days of tennis and golf was enjoyed by 16 competing pairs and their guests at the annual
Palace Hotel event held over the 8th and 9th March 2007. The Harley Watkins Cup was successfully
defended by Doug Cook and Mike Cox and the Dennis Platford Golf Trophy was won by Robin Knight in
somewhat wet conditions! Trophies were presented by Ann Platford and David Godfree.
Next year’s event is likely to take place again in March. More details and precise dates will be provided
nearer the time, but if you are interested in taking part in this early season fixture in the Club’s calendar,
please contact organiser John Harrop, at 27 Cumnor Hill, Oxford, Oxfordshire OX2 9EY or email him on
john_harrop@hotmail.com

Wimbledon Championships (ticket ballot)
The Club receives a very small allocation of tickets from Middlesex LTA and if you wish to be included in
the ballot for them, please complete and return the enclosed application form to Robin Smith.
Wimbledon Championships Cocktail Party
This year’s party will be held on Monday 2nd July and an application form for this highly popular event is
enclosed. Costs of holding the cocktail party have risen over the years and the Committee have decided to
subsidise the price of tickets to members and guests by charging a ticket price of £15 per person. This
remains the same as last year and still represents excellent value as it includes admission to the
Championships after 6.00pm.

Annual Dinner
The Annual Dinner is likely to take place in mid November as usual and details will be sent out nearer the
time. Please make a provisional note in your diary now.
(The Committee will be looking at the dates for both the annual dinner and AGM in an effort to minimise
the likelihood of clashes with other external events and thereby allow more members the opportunity to
attend.)

Annual General Meeting
Similarly, the AGM is likely to be held in February 2008 and we will hope to avoid the problems of low
attendance caused this year by a combination of bad weather and a special meeting of Queen’s Club
Members. As usual, the AGM will be followed by an informal dinner.

Club 50th Anniversary 2008
The Committee wish to celebrate the Club’s 50th anniversary in the summer of 2008. At the moment, a
cocktail party on the terrace of the House of Lords is planned, together with a tennis tournament either in
Oxford or London. Your views are important and I would be very grateful if you could complete the few
questions relating to this and return your answers to me by return of post.

MEMBERS

I am sorry to report the deaths of several Members since the publication of the last newsletter in October
2006. LJ Hare, PB Knight, J. Reardon, RG Smith, WW Threlfall and JN Wright have all sadly passed
away. We send our condolence to their families.
A new members’ handbook will not be printed before 2008 at the earliest, but members wishing to contact
new members or existing members who have moved house, will find details on the Club website at www.
vltcofgb.org.uk..(Go to “News”, then “Announcements”, click on new member details, enter ID “vltc” and
password “vetsclub”. Alternatively, contact the Hon. Secretary.
Members changing contact details are asked to please notify the Hon. Secretary in order that the database
may be kept up-to-date. It is hoped that as our database of email addresses grows, we will slowly arrive at a
position whereby the considerable cost of re-printing a handbook every few years can be avoided.
