GRaphiC desiGn CoRe CouRses Acrylics: Beginning
Starting with still life, students study composition, basic color theory and mixing, as well as various sketching approaches. Gain experience with multiple paint applications while layering glazes and scumbles, impasto and water techniques. Class culminates with a personalized final project.
Illustrator
Illustrator is a powerful PostScript illustration tool used to create artwork and animations for the Web and print media. You’ll learn how to draw with bezier curves, apply blends for depth, create fill patterns, trace scanned artwork, and explore various effects for manipulating text. Prerequisites: Familiarity with Mac or Windows folder and file management.
Designing Effective Websites
This course provides the principles needed to create a great website. You will apply the basics of user interface design and usability to your Web pages; effectively plan and design a user-focused website; outline the site content, structure and navigation; design the look and feel of your site; plan a usability test; and find a domain name and hosting service. Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of the Web and browsers.
Oil Painting: Introduction & Continuing
Discover the basic processes of painting with oils, including the fundamentals of good composition and design, and color theory basics. Learn the wide range of modes, both physical and conceptual, that are possible and apply them to your own personal creative expression.
InDesign–Level 1
InDesign can provide a basis for Web page development and is a prime tool for producing brochures, flyers, business cards, and newsletters. Learn how to set up new documents, import and manipulate text, create and add graphics, create a simple layout and memo, and design a basic newsletter. Prerequisites: Familiarity with Mac or Windows folder and file management.
Digital Photography: Introduction
Learn the basics of creating and manipulating digital images, including digital camera operation, composition, and printing. Students will use Photoshop to edit, color correct and manipulate their images. Prerequisite: Knowledge of Windows. Recommended: Familiarity with Photoshop.
Watercolor: Beginning
Designed for the beginning watercolorist, the course takes you step-by-step from the basic washes to finished paintings. Learn the importance of value and brush control while discovering ways to make your painting dramatic and rich.
Photoshop–Level 1
Learn image processing skills in this intensive, hands-on workshop. Topics include selection techniques, image retouching/restoration, using layers/channels, and integration with other components of Creative Suite. Prerequisite: Windows XP or equivalent experience.
Dreamweaver–Level 1
Dreamweaver is the software application used by most professional Web designers to build Web pages. Learn how to set up the Dreamweaver environment, define a website, create Web pages with text and graphic content, build navigation with hyperlinks, create styles for formatting pages, create tables for text, and test and upload the website to a Web server. Prerequisites: XHTML–Levels 1 and 2 and Cascading Style Sheets–Level 1. Recommended: Designing Effective Websites.
Color Theory
Course covers the fundamental vocabulary and properties of color. Study color mixing, optical interaction, and visual color phenomena in the human eye and in light. Learn how to develop an eye for color, and create complex and compelling color relationships.
Photoshop–Level 2
Learn how to use Photoshop to apply and manipulate layer masks, clip groups, and use channel operations for special effects. Students explore powerful selection and image editing techniques used by print, television, and multimedia professionals. Prerequisite: Photoshop–Level 1 or equivalent experience.
Figure Studies
Focus on the human form and portraiture using a variety of materials and processes. Students will learn about gesture, contour, proportion, and form in light. Reproductions of figure drawings facilitate ideas and encourage individual expression. Basic drawing skills recommended.
Composition and Typography
Starting with a basic history and analysis of various typefaces, learn the visual principles of graphic language. Topics include using weight, scale and layout; and combining type with images in original compositions. Students arrange and “paste up” compositions by hand.
Pre-Press Processes and Techniques: Introduction
This course provides an overview of digital publishing concepts, printing technologies, color processing and management, typography and working with service bureaus. Instructor is a graphic design professional. Prerequisites: Color Theory, Design Principles, and Photoshop–Level 1.
Flash–Level 1: Designing and Developing Media
Discover the basic concepts of Flash. Learn how to use drawing tools, import images, create vector graphics, work with layers, produce mask effects, add motion tweens, build interactive buttons, control content with button behaviors, and create navigation systems. Course also includes an introduction to actionscripting. Prerequisites: Familiarity with design applications, such as Fireworks or Photoshop.
Design Principles: Introduction
The principles of design provide you with the tools to create visual art in any medium. Students will create twodimensional abstract compositions using the elements of line, shape, value, and color. Learn to analyze work in terms of visual balance, movement, emphasis, unity, and variety. Class includes lectures, demonstrations, and studio exercises.
eleCtives Brochure and Catalog Design–Designing for Print
Learn to design print brochures and catalogs from creative concept through completion. We will explore the organization of visual information and incorporate photos, vector artwork, type, and a variety of visual elements to create effective page designs. This class furthers your design knowledge; assignments designed to develop your Graphic Design portfolio. Prerequisite: InDesign and Photoshop.
Symbol and Icon Development
Graphic symbols and visual icons are used for everything from corporate logos to washing instructions for our garments. This class will explore the creation of icons and symbols from concept through completion by building on a core knowledge of symbol and icon development which can then be applied to create corporate identity programs, UI projects, signage, and communication projects. Prerequisite: Photoshop.
Developing Your Portfolio
Your portfolio is a critical tool in selling your work, whether capturing public and/or private commissions or approaching a gallery. Learn how to develop quality marketing materials, including professional-level photography of your work, a business card, artist statement, presentation portfolio, and resume.
Drawing: Beginning
With an emphasis on composition, learn to draw from still life, using the basic elements of drawing such as line, shape, pattern, space and value.
Cascading Style Sheets–Level 1
Design your website using the preferred method for formatting Web pages. Students learn correct style sheet syntax; how to effectively use external, embedded, and inline style sheets; and how different browser versions interpret style rules. Other skills include creating style rules to modify text and layout and enhance the look and feel of the page. Prerequisite: XHTML–Levels 1 and 2.
XHTML–Level 1
Learn the basic building blocks of Web authoring and creating your own Web pages in this hands-on course. Topics covered include XHTML standards, basic structure and syntax, adding text and structuring pages, creating hyperlinks, and adding graphics and image maps. Prerequisite: Familiarity with the Web and Windows or Mac file and folder management.
XHTML–Level 2
Build on the tools learned in XHTML–Level 1 to develop more advanced Web pages. Learn how to create and modify tables, set up forms, use meta tags, validate code, and publish your site. The class includes a hands-on project that utilizes the tools learned in levels 1 and 2. Prerequisite: XHTML–Level 1.
