About Formula SAE
Each school year the Missouri S&T Formula Car Team designs and builds a
prototype formula-style, open-wheel racecar to compete against international
engineering schools in an SAE-sponsored design competition. The event
scenario is a fictional manufacturing firm has tasked student design teams to
produce a racecar as a potential production item with a target market of the non-
professional weekend autocross racer. The events in each competition are setup
to determine not only the racecar performance but also the manufacturability,
cost, and sales potential.

Missouri S&T Formula SAE History
The Missouri S&T Racing Team is an annual contender in the Formula SAE
design competition. Each year, Formula SAE events become more competitive
as evidenced by the nearly 250% growth in entries since 1989. An increase in the
number of international teams has also made it challenging to remain in the top
tier of university design teams.

The Miners have enjoyed great success in recent years, showing consistent
strength with four Autocross and two Skidpad wins in the last seven events, while
also reaching Design semifinals in the past five competitions. In 2008 the team
earned its first overall victory at Formula SAE Virginia, and second place overall
at Formula SAE California. In 2012, the team will compete at Formula SAE
Michigan, Formula SAE Lincoln (Nebraska), the University of Toronto Shootout,
and the Goodyear Challenge in Akron, Ohio.

Besides proving design concepts at SAE events, our team exhibits the car
around the state at high school science fairs, public exhibitions, and recruiting
events for the university. These events help raise young students’ interest in the
field of engineering, and give the next generation of engineers something to
reach for when they enter college.

Benefits to Students
The Formula SAE Team, open to all Missouri S&T students, is a great learning
experience. Team members combine what they learn in the classroom with
hands-on experience in design, manufacturing, and testing, and develop critical
interpersonal skills while working as a team. They learn project management,
marketing, budgeting, communication, and other vital management skills.
Students active in Formula SAE become better prepared for their professional
careers as engineers. These valuable experiences would not be possible without
the generosity of corporate and private sponsors.
