JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, serve as a liaison between the school, student's home and community
organizations in matters relating to the attendance, behavior or the educational needs of the student;
encourage parent/guardian involvement in their student's achievement, other school activities and
community programs and organizations; assist administration and staff in the monitoring of student
behavior and activities before, during and after school hours; perform related duties as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
The classification specification does not describe all duties performed by all incumbents within the class.
This summary provides examples of typical tasks performed in this classification
• Establish and maintain contact with agencies within the designated school area which service youth
such as teens centers, community recreation centers, neighborhood centers, and neighborhood
facility centers. E
• Provide information to parents/guardians and students of community associations, social service
agencies and other resources available to obtain assistance. E
• Provide information pertaining to available youth services to site administration and students. E
• Schedule and participate in conferences between parents/guardians and school personnel as
requested by site administrator and/or staff. E
• Monitor the environment of the school campus before, during and after school hours to assist in the
smooth operations of campus activity and during student transition periods between
classes/assemblies/the movement during other activities. E
• Telephone parents/guardians to discuss student-related problems, concerns and possible solutions
to address, resolve and correct the inappropriate behavior and conduct. E
• Provide information relating to school rules and regulations, procedures and practices to students,
parents, guardians and visitors. E
• Work with students and their families with special needs to investigate and provide possible
solutions, options, and/or referrals to meet identified needs. E
Motivate and stress the importance of education, self-esteem, positive behavior and regular school
attendance to students. E
• Identify, contact and attain the support of community organizations, agencies and other possible
resources that can and will provide assistance to students and their families. E
• Promote, reassure and encourage parent/guardian participation and attendance in school and
community activities. E
• Counsel students regarding acceptable behavior. E
• Diffuse potentially volatile and hostile situations involving students and others on campus during
established school hours and at after-hour school functions.
• Develop appropriate student activities for students. E
• Assist in the patrolling of the campus to control student behavior in halls, restrooms and other site
areas during the school day. E
• Intercept/break-up any fights and signs of campus unrest; report participating students to site
administrator. E
• Deter unwelcome visitors or those who do not have official business from entering the campus site.

• Monitor visitor activity on campus; direct visitors to the appropriate offices or school officials. E
• Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work. E
• Provide support and assistance at school authorized functions held on and off campus. E
• Operate office, instructional and classroom equipment including mimeograph, typewriter, copiers,
laminator and telephones; transport/set up/operate audiovisual equipment for classroom use. E
• Pick up and deliver textbooks and/or other miscellaneous supplies to and from school site and
location of origin. E
• May administer first aid or necessary physical assistance to ill or distressed students; may
administer prescribed medication in accordance with established District procedure.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Community Liaison Worker works at a school site to resolve and inform students,
parents/guardians, school administration and staff, and local community agencies of the needs,
recreation resources, services and option available within the community; and cultivates and
maintains positive communications with all involved parties. The Community Liaison Worker will
possess excellent oral communication and interpersonal relationship skills. A major function and
responsibility of the position is to assist in the patrolling of the campus before, during and after school
hours to monitor and discipline inappropriate student behavior and to take or recommend appropriate
action; incumbents may also work with at risk students who are in or special programs and monitored
by program staff.

Diffuse potentially volatile and hostile situations involving students and others on campus during
established school hours and at after-hour school functions.
Communicate orally with tact and discretion.

Education and Training:
Graduation from high school or equivalent

Experience:
One year of working with students in a structured environment or with youth groups.
Verifiable supervised experience as a volunteer in a school or related organizational activity may be
substituted on an equal basis.
Any other combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired skills,
knowledge or abilities may be considered.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Positions in this classification require the use of a personal automobile and the possession of a valid
California Class C driver's license.
Some positions in this classification may require the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and
in writing, in a designated second language. Selective certification in accordance with the Education
Code may be effected to meet this requirement.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT
School, office, playground environment, off-campus locations offering commercial or recreation
activities; home visits to residential areas within the community; social service agencies and local
community organizations; and to other applicable resources within the community providing
necessary services and assistance.

In accordance with Education Code Section 45301, an employee appointed to this class must serve a
probationary period of six (6) months during which time an employee must demonstrate at least an
overall satisfactory performance. Failure to do so shall result in the employee’s termination.
