Office of Housing What is the CDBG program? The City of Chesapeake provides grant assistance through Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds received from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Applicants are awarded funding on an annual competitive basis to implement activities which provide decent housing, a suitable living environment, and economic opportunities, principally for low and moderate income persons. impacts the City’s housing stock, business environment, neighborhoods, public services and public facilities. Although, public facilities & improvements projects have traditionally received the largest single use of CDBG funds (40%) or $494,345, the City serves as a catalyst for community development, homeless, housing and other needs. The City of Chesapeake anticipates receiving $1,221,737 in CDBG Entitlement funds and $5,000 in CDBG Program Income. One hundred percent of funds will benefit low to moderateincome persons and communities in Chesapeake. Strategic Goal 2 Objectives: Upgrade existing housing stock. Projects: 1) Residential Rehabilitation, 2) Façade Improvements, 3) Housing Rehabilitation Assistance, and 4) Smoke Detector Program. Outcomes: Improved sustainability (promoting livable and viable communities) Strategic Goal 3 Objectives: Provide services for homeless persons, health care for uninsured persons, and youth enrichment programs. Projects: 1) Our House Families, 2) South Norfolk Adult Health Center, and Children’s Harbor Chesapeake. Outcomes: Improved availability and accessibility of services. Objectives & Projects The City plans to undertake the following objectives and projects in FY 2008 (July 1, 2008June 30, 2009) to further achievement of its strategic goals: Strategic Goal 1 How are CDBG dollars used? As the nation’s eighth largest Federal grant program, the CDBG program Objectives: Improve infrastructure and remove conditions which are detrimental to public welfare, health and safety. Projects: 1) Campostella Square, 2) Code Enforcement, and 3) Water/Sewer Connection Project. Outcomes: Improved availability and accessibility of infrastructure and improved sustainability (promoting livable and viable communities).
